Man Utd in Brazil – a waste of time?
BBC News – Jan 11, 2000
British clubs originally shunned the European cup and now it is the most prestigious club competition in the World. People should lay off United and just be proud that Britain have a club representing them in the tournament. Also, if United help bring the 2006 World cup to these shores, the whole Brazilian experience will have been a success, whether or not they progress in the competition. Alexander,
Wales

In 3hrs of over-rated, over hyped and over televised football Manchester Utd, The FA and the Government successfully managed to ruin the greatest club knock-out tournament in the world. Would anybody be surprised if, upon there return, United were allowed back into the FA Cup? United are allowed to much freedom to roam, you can guarantee that if the likes of Preston or Norwich DEMANDED to be excluded from the FA Cup the FA would have a different view than the one taken. Andrew Swindells,
Liverpool, England

NECAXA! NECAXA! NECAXA!David,
USA… They go into the sunshine play two games (the third will be subs, mostly) Their darling only plays one game! And then back to Flu ridden England, gripped by winter and the game is hard. Who do you think is better rested for the Arsenal game? Man-U or Arsenal? And how many games does Man-U not have to play – 6 or 7. It works well for them doesn’t it?Michael J Sullivan,
Canada

United needed to test their skills against the cream of world football, not just the Europeans and it proved that although they may be champions both here and in Europe there is still a long way for them to go before they are truly world class. Glenn King,
Switzerland

MUFC had the opportunity to do not just England proud but all of their supporters worldwide. It is OK for them not to win every event they participate in just as long as they deliver their best. So what if their best is always not good enough for the rest of the world. I still say ‘nice try’ guys hopefully next time we win it.

FANS BACK FERGUSON JUDGEMENT ON WORLD RETURN
4TheGame – Jan 12, 2000
"The responsibility for Manchester United not being in the FA Cup is down to government and FA pressure. The PLC could’ve turned round and said ‘no’ but they didn’t. "Most fans thought that sacrificing the FA Cup was too high a price to pay to benefit England’s 2006 World Cup bid. Football fans want to ensure the integrity of the domestic game is honoured. " United will return home after failing to reach the last four of the World Club Championships. The Rio experience started badly as David Beckham was sent off and United could only draw with Necaxa of Mexico. Then two costly Gary Neville blunders helped Brazilian giants Vasco da Gama end United’s hopes of conquering the world.

S. Africa Confident of Blatter’s Support to Host 2006 World Cup

Africa Confident of Blatter’s Support to Host 2006 World Cup

South Africa is still confident of the support of FIFA President Joseph Blatter in its attempt to bring the world’s most prestigious sporting event to Africa for the first time, South African Press Association reported on January 18. Jordaan, chief executive officer of the South Africa 2006 World Cup Bid Committee, said he had had a very successful meeting with Blatter in Rio de Janiero earlier this week and was confident of the continued support of the FIFA president. Jordaan reaffirmed South Africa is the leading candidate on the African continent for hosting the great sporting event. Any doubt about Blatter’s attitude to African soccer would be dispelled by the FIFA president’s upcoming address to the Confederation of African Football’s congress in Accra, Ghana next Thursday, Jordaan added.

“You can’t just create a new competition while there’s another one going on at the same time, ” he declared. “Spain and England, among other countries, have had to decide against their own leagues for this competition. They’re going to kill football. ” A bit excessive with his final thought maybe. But I take his point and, to some degree, agree. Manchester withdrew from the FA Cup, the oldest and most prestigious domestic cup tournament in the world, in which they were reigning champions, to appear at FIFA’s inaugural bash in Brazil. And for what? David Beckham was sent off in a surprising draw with Mexican side Necaxa, Gary Neville produced two howlers to gift Romario a couple of goals in a 3-1 defeat by Vasco da Gama and as fast as that United’s title hopes were over… But it would have reflected badly on their national federations if they hadn’t, or so the argument goes. Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich would have been United’s substitutes. Germany are one of England’s chief rivals for hosting rights in six years. Still, United’s decision to opt for Brazil and not the FA Cup led to a storm of protest, which rages on even now. Van Gaal, for one, hates all this pressure, the politics, the disruption and disharmony — but most of all the timing.

They were made to look like a bunch of lost eunuchs. Not only were their opinions on the new stadium ignored but some of them were not even aware that there was a forum in which to voice them. Tony Blair, always keen to promote himself as Joe Fan, has staked a good deal of personal credibility on the England World Cup bid. He should pay more attention to what is going on here – while there is still time. I DOUBT that there are many flags flying at half-mast in his honour but the demise of Stan Flashman, the ticket tout and former chairman of Barnet FC, should not pass without some comment in this column. After all, his antics managed to fill it for much of the early Nineties. Part Robert Maxwell, part Boris Yeltsin, he was a bruiser with a spectacular talent for blundering as his club staggered from one financial crisis to another… And it was Flashman who put in the money which enabled Barnet to rise to the Football League a few years later. Without him, there would probably be no Barnet today. Like so many football villains, he had his good points. None the less, so turbulent was his era that the club have decided not to mark his passing in any way. There will be no Stan Flashman stand, gate or even loo. And there was no minute’s silence at the game immediately after his death. I dare say that some people would have disrupted it.

Beach boys from Brazil set for the grand finale

” Lopes and his fellow club officials, by the way, are no less volatile than their players. Yesterday, the respected official press officer of the tournament was recovering from a broken collarbone after attempting to defuse a row that apparently involved the Vasco chairman and coach and several other parties, and ended with him being pushed to the floor. Hardly the kind of incident that will encourage FIFA to look favourably on the Brazilian bid to stage the 2006 World Cup. Football is never dull here. If the final of this championship is as spectacular as the sunsets, the applause will ring out far beyond Ipanema and Copacabana.

Ferguson banks on his `kids’
Irish Independent – Jan 11, 2000
THERE is no logic to it really, but the mood in the Manchester United camp seems to have improved immeasurably in the days since their chances of becoming the official club world champions were dashed by their own hand and by the attacking genius of the Vasco da Gama forwards, Romario and Edmundo, in the Maracana stadium on Saturday. Their trip to South America has turned into a salvage operation rather than a continuing quest for global domination and in the midst of their failure United have become the goodwill ambassadors that the Football Association had been hoping for so fervently as it steps up England’s bid to host the 2006 World Cup. On Sunday night, for instance, David Beckham turned Cincinnati Bengals elite jersey up with the rest of the United squad at a gathering organised by the British Embassy to support the bid. Even among a select collection of expats, local officials and FIFA bigwigs, he was not allowed a moment’s peace as he tried to talk quietly with his team-mates on a terrace overlooking Copacabana beach. He has had an especially torrid time since the squad arrived last week after various unsettling revelations about his private life and then his sending-off against Necaxa on Thursday and yet he still submitted to every autograph request, every demand for a posed picture and every facile attempt at a snide joke, with a ready smile. Those who are quick to criticise his every move may also choose to ignore the joy that spread across his face yesterday when he joined in a kickabout with a group of children from some Rio slums who had been brought to United’s training complex on the southern outskirts of the city as part of a UNICEF programme… Only Andy Cole, who will probably captain the side, will represent the established stars of the team, but in choosing to play so many of the youngsters, Ferguson has deftly transformed what might otherwise have been a tiresome irrelevance against a group of spirited part-timers into a tantalising glimpse of the future. For Wallwork and Higginbotham, in particular, though, it is almost a fairytale ending to a traumatic period. Last year Wallwork was banned from football for life, Higginbotham for a year, after a fracas with a referee during their loan spell with Royal Antwerp. United appealed against the sentence, which was commuted and altered so that it applied only in Belgium, not worldwide. “Things were going pretty badly at one stage,” Wallwork said yesterday, “but it’s going fine now and I’m putting it behind me. It is hard to break into the first team at any club but it is harder at United because there are so many good players. The rest of us have just got to try to take our chances.

Regardless of how the controversy surrounding Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice shakes out, the NFL has already locked in broadcast rights fees of about $5.1 billion for this year from CBS (CBS), 21st Century Fox (FOX), NBC and ESPN.
