Rugby punts for soccer’s 2006 bid
Dispatch Online – Mar 11, 2000
Springbok captain Joost van der Westhuizen and members of the current South African U19 squad will don 2006 Bid T-shirts at Loftus Versfeld today to send out a strong message of support to the bid. Sarfu president Silas Nkanunu said yesterday that it was important not just for soccer but for the country as a whole for South Africa to be awarded the 2006 Soccer World Cup. “Along with the Olympics and the Rugby World Cup, the Soccer World Cup is one of the major sporting events in the world. To host an event of this size in South Africa will create many jobs and give a great boost to our economy… “It will be good for all South Africans to host the Soccer World Cup here in 2006. ”

Sarfu CEO Rian Oberholzer said Sarfu was already helping out with the bid. “We have already had a number of meetings with Soccer World Cup 2006 Bid team and in their proposal they have suggested using a number of rugby stadiums which we are completely supportive of.

Smell of corruption haunts SA’s
World Cup bid

OLIVER HOLT

JOHANNESBURG – They have portrayed this place as Gotham City, a
metropolis damned by a disease called murder, an epidemic known as
hijacking. But those who are expecting the South African bid to stage the
2006 World Cup to collapse in bloodshed and muggings when the Fifa
inspection team begins its crucial visit this week are likely to
be sorely disappointed. There should, however, still be plenty of encouragement for
Alec McGivan and Sir Bobby Charlton, the men at the head of the
English bid, who have tried to undermine their rivals by voicing
doubts heavy with neo-colonialism. However, a far more subtle danger is emerging as a threat to
the efforts of South Africa – long considered favourites to stage
the tournament – to become the first nation to bring the World Cup
to this continent. The six-day visit by Alan Rothenberg and his five-man Fifa
delegation, which begins tomorrow, will be one of the decisive
events in the increasingly bitter battle for the right to host the
2006 World Cup. Concerns about security, long seen as South Africa’s achilles
heel, should quickly be dispelled.

Fifa ‘impressed’ by SA World Cup bid
BBC News – Mar 14, 2000
At the end of their five-day visit, the leader of the Fifa delegation, Alan Rothenberg, said: they had been “very favourably impressed” with the facilities and the written proposals. We have been most favourably impressed.

Football: Germany the last down Wembley way
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 17, 2000
The decision, announced last night by the Football Association, means a delay in closing Wembley until after this 2002 World Cup qualifier takes place on Oct 7. No guests could be more appropriate for the old stadium’s last bow. As West Germany, the nation of Franz Beckenbauer and Wolfgang Weber, Wolfgang Overath and Uwe Seeler provided noble opposition as England claimed the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966. All the great names will be invited back to Wembley for an occasion that will be a pageant, a farewell party and a deadly serious football match. As the FA prepare to dis- mantle Wembley, maybe the Germans could be presented with a crossbar and a goal-line for old time’s sake… That evening, Sir Bobby Charlton and Beckenbauer, old sporting foes and firm friends, shared a handshake, a smile and a beer when the draw was made. Charlton and Beckenbauer have since been spearheading their countries’ campaigns to host the World Cup of 2006. If England fail to gain the nod from FIFA in July, the re-building of Wembley will lose some of its significance. But the very thought of Germany, the heirs to ’66 and the men who tamed the.

Fifa praise a shot in the arm for SA’s Cup hopes
Dispatch Online – Mar 20, 2000
”This is a tremendous boost for our bid campaign and this follows on the comment made by the head of the Fifa technical team, Alan Rothenberg, when he described our bid as unbelievable last Tuesday on completion of his team’s visit,” said a delighted Safa CEO Raymond Hack. The gist of the letter signed by Fifa secretary general Zen Ruffinen lauded Safa and the bid committee’s readiness and high standard of the SA bid. It reads: ”We wish to thank you on behalf of the Fifa inspection group for your most gracious hospitality and the most meticulous way in which the visit was planned and conducted. ”What is more Fifa was extremely impressed by the commitment of the South African government in supporting the bid, the tremendous enthusiasm of the people in charge of the stadiums and the population at large, and most particularly the obvious dedication and competence of the entire bid team and the SA Football Association.

Fairness — the foundation on which sport rests
Dispatch Online – Mar 10, 2000
And if sports is the catalyst on which shoulders may hang ultimate peace, than fairness is the very foundation on which it flourishes. For that reason I find the Nike U15 debacle which involves Safa exco member Eddie du Plooy and club Braelyn Callies, a blatant contravention of the concept of of fairness. What makes it a little sadder is that the Football Association of Border (Fab or Safa Border) had a chance to put things right — and failed. The disciplinary hearing they had this week solved nothing. The facts are that last night I had in my hands some U15 players’ cards of youngsters who were training with a ‘Parkside United U15′ side at the same time. The only problem was these cards were from Braelyn Callies — making these youngsters all registered members of that club. So, how come they were training with Parkside last night? Why did Fab not address that?

The murkiness surrounding the issue that Elfa should have notified Callies about the play-offs, does not hold water… Let’snot be unfair to Du Plooy and admit the drive and ambition that have taken him right to the top administration level of soccer. His energy to work for soccer is unlimited, but should be channelled in the right direction. Especially in the same week that a Fifa investigating group arrives in South Africa to assess our chances of winning the 2006 World Cup bid. BLACKBURN ROVERS

Border’s only MTN First Division side had an extra week of rest after their opponents of last week, Durban United, failed to turn up for their clash at Mdantsane. There is an apparent players’ revolt at that club. Maybe the rest gave Rovers the time to consider their future — six losses in a row spells BIG trouble — and time to recharge their confidence levels, which play a huge part in sport. So this weekend, the Butterworth side travels to my hometown of Cape Town to take on Quinton Fortune’s side.

High-tech sponsors on the fast track
BBC News – Mar 10, 2000
But their grip has been loosened. A European Union ban on smoking advertising comes into effect in 2006, but before then Formula One must show a noticeable reduction. Already five of the 11 teams have no tobacco involvement, opening up avenues for other companies with plenty of cash to spare. “There is nothing bigger than Formula One, nothing that gives you more exposure,” says sponsorship consultant Andrew Jameson of John Taylor International. Ideal platform

Figures indicate that nearly 300 million people in 200 countries watch at least part of each race. Mr Jameson believes it is an ideal platform for IT and internet businesses… But Orange has one thing in its favour – the car will certainly be easy to spot. Consistent exposure

As Andrew Jameson points out, the Grand Prix season consists not just of 17 races, but also 17 practice and qualifying sessions and fairly continuous press and TV coverage. “It’s great for a brand to have six weeks’ exposure during the World Cup, but as soon as the final whistle goes in the final match, your exposure drops off. ”

Formula One sponsorship is not cheap. Mercedes paid ?200m for a five-year deal with McLaren, Yahoo! stumped up a rumoured ?16m for its tie-up with Prost and just having a company name on the wing mirrors could cost ?1m. But Andrew Jameson says there are real synergies between high-tech companies and motor racing. “When a car goes past the pit wall, there is a bank of computers which download from various sensors information about the car,” he explained.

Auction starts for soccer’s crazy prices
Irish Independent – Mar 21, 2000
From season 2001-2002 viewers could find Match of the Day on at six in the evening on BBC or ITV, games on regional ITV channels and on pay-per-view on cable. Complete games featuring clubs like Manchester United with their own TV channels could be replayed 48 hours after the final whistle, and it won’t be long before goals are screened on your mobile phone and over the internet. This is no fantasy of a football-dot-com billionaire with money to burn but a likely scenario for a League that is the most valuable property in sport outside the US. When rights were last sold in a four-year deal which cost Sky £670m for 60 live matches and the BBC £73m for highlights, Sky killed the market before it opened for business by paying the League £50m in advance as a `sweetener’ to buy by private treaty. One of its rivals has since complained of the practice to the European Commission and to Britain’s new competitions authority. It will not happen this time. Sky is well-regarded by all club chairmen for its pioneering work over the last eight years but England’s top clubs are now playing a different ball game… It suggested that possibility to the League chairmen last month. But the League now has the option, which it did not have four years ago, to sell off a complete package. The German media group Kirch, which has bought the 2002 and 2006 World Cup finals rights from FIFA, is one possible buyer. Another is Swiss company CLT-UFA which owns 35 per cent of Channel 5. Even for the more basic packages Sky is opposed in the auction by two who can match it: NTL, now valued at $28bn and backed by shareholders Microsoft and France Telecom which has more than two million subscribers, and digital platform ONdigital, which is owned jointly by ITV compa nies Granada and Carlton and has more than 500,000 customers. This will bring the big bucks but satellite and cable stations have to ally themselves with terrestrial partners because the Premier League demands access to wider audi ences. Four years ago ITV was not in the market for high lights.

In those lotteries, you’re far less likely to have to share the jackpot, which is the biggest investment killer.Galvani’s proposal, in 1791, that the nervous system generated electricity swept away the humoral theories of nerve action: they had lasted 2000 years still linger in some quarters!
