BBC SPORT | Special Events | 2006 World Cup decision | Dempsey quits…
BBC News – Jul 13, 2000
Fifa made the announcement late on Thursday, just hours after Dempsey stood down from his position as president of the Oceania Football Confederation. Clearly upset by the hostile reaction to his decision to abstain in Zurich last week, the 79-year-old handed his daughter – OFC general secretary Josephine King – a letter confirming his retirement. He had previously indicated he would step down on 1 October 2000 – two years ahead of schedule. "

Dempsey said his family had been under tremendous pressure since his return from Zurich. Deciding vote

The Scots-born administrator’s abstention gave Germany a 12-11 victory – if he had voted for South Africa, Fifa president Sepp Blatter would have used his deciding vote for South Africa. “My family has been harassed and I’m not prepared to let that continue,” said Dempsey. “Annie (his wife) and I are going on holiday. She has stood up to it well, but it is not fair to let it continue.

Upset Dempsey quits Fifa posts
Dispatch Online – Jul 14, 2000
In a short statement, Fifa said Dempsey had tendered his resignation, effective today, from the executive body and all other committees. Dempsey had earlier announced his retirement, effective immediately, as president of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC). “In his letter to Fifa general secretary Michel Zen-Ruffinen, Mr Dempsey cited the media attention following the 2006 Fifa World Cup decision as the principal reason for his resignation,” the Fifa statement said. It gave no details as to how Dempsey would be replaced… She has stood up to it well, but it is not fair to let it continue. The pressure had been too much for me. “My family is more important than football,” the 36-year veteran of international soccer administration said. Dempsey was heavily criticised after the Zurich vote. He had been ordered by his confederation to vote for SA once England was eliminated. If that had happened, the vote would have been tied 12-12 and SA would probably have won on the casting vote of Fifa president Sepp Blatter. Some in SA have called for the vote to be rerun, but Fifa insists that is not legally possible.

“CAF did all its power to ensure a first-ever African host for the World Cup Finals,” Jordaan said. “We wish to make it clear that we are very grateful for the role CAF played in the voting process in Zurich last week. ”

Germany were named the hosts after edging out SA 12-11 to take the World Cup Bid 2006 by a single vote. Jordaan said SA lost the bid because of New Zealand’s Charles Dempsey’s abstention and also because the Asian countries broke their long-standing alliance with Africa. “In particular, Al Dabal of Saudi Arabia, who had been lobbying CAF for support for Morocco, switched his vote from Africa to Europe once Morocco had been eliminated,” Jordaan said. “CAF have been criticised for not backing South Africa’s candidacy outright, but they were in a very difficult position. ”

He added there were two African candidates in the race — Morocco and South Africa — and said it would have been unfair for CAF to have had to make a choice between their members.

Ivory Coast Football Team
Football.co.uk – Jul 15, 2000
How did they Qualify -The Ivory Coast National football team finished Top of their World Cup Germany 2006 group ahead of Cameroon and Egypt. Didier Drogba proved priceless in the qualifications with 9 goals and a double against Egypt which meant they could afford to slip up in their penultimate match against Cameroon. This is the first time they have reached the finals in 8 attempts. still most people are looking upon Le Cote D’Ivoire as a treat to watch. Their strengths are in the attack and also defence yet they lack in concentration throughout the field 100% of the time.

Tourism lost when 2006 bid failed Köpke
Dispatch Online – Jul 13, 2000
He said the unfortunate thing about losing the bid was not only the improvement in infrastructure, influx of money and job creation winning the bid would have given South Africa but the loss of a tourism opportunity. “The tourists would have done a tremendous amount for South Africa. “They would have come purely to watch football and if they had a good experience here they could have become ambassadors for this country,” Köpke said… He said the unfortunate thing about losing the bid was not only the improvement in infrastructure, influx of money and job creation winning the bid would have given South Africa but the loss of a tourism opportunity. “The tourists would have done a tremendous amount for South Africa. “They would have come purely to watch football and if they had a good experience here they could have become ambassadors for this country,” Köpke said.

NFA complains about Benin ordeal
Namibian – Jul 14, 2000
However, complaints against Namibia have been dealt with swiftly by Caf with the NFA having to pay hefty fines. Meanwhile, Rukoro said the NFA has not yet received a letter of apology from New Zealand Soccer (NZS), that country’s equivalent of the NFA. NZS said on Monday it would apologise to every soccer-playing nation for Charles Dempsey’s failure to vote in the deciding ballot for the 2006 World Cup. Dempsey, the Oceania Football Confederation president, ignored instructions and failed to support South Africa’s bid, effectively gifting it to Germany at last week’s vote at Fifa headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland. Rukoro said the apology would most probably be sent by ordinary mail and not by electronic mail or facsimile.

A WWI battlefield was an odd and terrifying blend of the old and the new.
