Should Africa boycott the World Cup?
BBC News – Jul 17, 2000
This shows that people on the committee have no regard for Africans. The best that African countries can do is to boycott the World Cup and concentrate on African competitions. Sosten Lungu,
Zambia
With the exception of Argentina and Brazil, all world-class football is played in Europe and European finance has built football into the game that it is today. Africa has not earned the right to host the World Cup and should stop complaining. There is no room for political correctness in the game. An African boycott would be meaningless as nobody would notice their absence. Ignacio McIntyre,
Argentina… Africa should go to Germany, win the final and bring the Cup home!
Mo-Bash,
UK
The actions of Zimbabwe in the previous months have done nothing to help improve the image of the region. Now that their over-zealous police have killed 13, what hope is there for a major football tournament in southern Africa?
Ed Crampton,
UK. If Africans do not learn a lesson about this now, there is no further hope for us. A total boycott of World Cup 2006 by all African countries should be the right answer. At some point Africa will have to be taken seriously.
SA launch World Cup appeal
BBC News – Jul 26, 2000
They want to set up a process of arbitration over the controversial decision to award the competiton to the Germans. Irvin Khoza, chairman of South Africa’s 2006 Bid Committee,
said the South Africa Football Association (Safa) had sent a
letter to Fifa “asking them to set the process in motion”. Khoza said it was hoped Safa would be able to present the
information gathered by himself and senior Safa official Danny
Jordaan in the last three weeks. Khoza said the appeal had been made in terms of Article 59
of the Fifa statute, which deals with the right of any member to
arbitration.
Fifa proposal threatens British influence
BBC News – Jul 18, 2000
If the proposal goes through, the vice-presidency would go under the control of Uefa. Historic position
The move would be likely to further undermine the standing of the British associations within football’s main corridors of power. Lack of influence within Fifa and Uefa was highlighted as one of the main reasons for England’s dismal showing in the World Cup 2006 vote. Football Association chairman Geoff Thompson was recently elected to the executive committee of Uefa, but the chances of building on that post would suffer without automatic access to a position on the Fifa executive. Britain was awarded the vice-presidency in perpetuity in the late 1940s, after the home nations helped create what has now become Fifa. An international match was held at Hampden Park in Glasgow, with the proceeds going to the world governing body. In return, Fifa agreed not to question the right of the four home nations to have a permanent place on the executive committee.
South Africa demands Fifa talks
BBC News – Jul 23, 2000
Germany won a controversial 12-11 vote over South Africa earlier this month after Oceania delegate Charles Dempsey abstained in the final round. New Zealander Dempsey cited “intolerable pressure” for his
decision and has since quit as president of the Oceania Football
Confederation and as a member of the decision-making Fifa executive committee. South African World Cup bid chairman Irvin Khoza, who received strong backing from former president Nelson Mandela, claims
visits by him and other officials to Belgium and Australia had
created the impression there were options worth following.
Man Utd’s FA Cup catastrophe
BBC News – Jul 27, 2000
”
United opted to take part in the inaugural World Club Championship in Brazil to help England’s ill-fated 2006 World Cup bid. Ferguson now admits the move was “without question a catastrophe. ”
But he also revealed United faced no choice after being strongly pressurised by both the Football Association and the Government to take part, so that German champions Bayern Munich did not take United’s place and score political points. Ferguson admits he was then outraged by the FA and Government’s subsequent lack of support for United, who had legend Sir Bobby Charlton as a member of the bid committee, after the decision to pull out of the FA Cup sparked mass public uproar.
Trio gain soccer coaching qualifications in Germany
Namibian – Jul 28, 2000
Ockhuizen and Kheiseb are currently coaching school children of Windhoek High School, Windhoek International School and the Holy Cross Convent. Huseb’s long-term aim, however, is to assist Namibian soccer on a national level. "I think we will qualify for the 2006 World Cup and my aim is to start working towards that – either as a coach or a player," he said. Huseb, however, believes that the quality of coaching in Namibia is still weak and has a long way to go. "I’m impressed with what some of the coaches have done, but with the right qualifications they can go so much further. I also believe that selectors must not just concentrate on Premier League teams when they select national youth teams. There is a lot of talent in the lower leagues and the schools, which should also be monitored for national teams," he said.
No Harare repeat in PE says Zola
Dispatch Online – Jul 18, 2000

Asked if the absence of McCarthy or Shaun Bartlett won’t affect attendance, Dunywa exclaimed: “On the contrary. The Siyabonga Nomvetes and the Cyril Nzamas will pull them in like moths to a light. ”
With Carlos Perreira of Brazil opting to coach a Brazilian club instead of the South African side, the SA Football Association is now scouting the world for a suitable candidate. The Bafana Bafana will utilise their time in Port Elizabeth to honour their social responsibilities by conducting coaching cli-nics in formerly deprived areas, and will visit the SOS Village in Korsten. Dunywa was not prepared to be drawn out on the 2006 WorldCup bid dilemma, except to say bid chief Danny Jordaan and assistant Irwin Khosa are still locked in meetings in Belgium with lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont — the man responsible for the ground-breaking Bosman ruling against Fifa. “We are expecting a report from them this week… ”
