Africa soccer body snubs Asia over World Cup 2006
Dispatch Online – Aug 4, 2000
Officials from the two organisations met yesterday ahead of an executive committee meeting of world governing body Fifa and discussed the 2006 World Cup bid vote last month. The four Asian delegates backed Germany, who beat South Africa 12-11 in the final round of voting after Oceania representative Charles Dempsey controversially abstained. Africa and Asia stage an annual two-leg match between club champions and a biennial two-leg encounter between national team champions. Raja Casablanca of Morocco and South Africa were the last winners of the competitions.

Should the World Club Championship be scrapped?
BBC News – Aug 4, 2000
It is fair to say the inaugural Championships, held in Brazil earlier this year, were dogged by controversy. Manchester United were told that if they did not compete it could harm England’s 2006 World Cup bid. They were given special dispensation by the Football Association to pull out of the FA Cup, which was met with huge criticism. Brazil’s Corinthians were crowned the inaugural champions but did anyone care who won?

So, after all these problems, is the World Club Championship worth it?

Do you believe it justifies all the fixture upset it will cause or should it be scrapped?

Have Your Say

It seems the only people complaining are from the UK. The World Club Championship is about more than football in Europe, its about growing football on a world scale. As an Aussie it was great watching South Melbourne play against Manchester United, who would have ever thought that could be possible? No amount of money could have bought the goodwill and exposure that the World Clubs gave football in Australia.

FIFA unity crumbles over 2006
Namibian – Aug 7, 2000
Shortly after Blatter passed a series of measures through Congress without dissent or a single adverse vote, it emerged that the African Confederation had broken off relations with its Asian counterpart and that Japan was refusing to stage a FIFA-imposed event. The Afro-Asian row was fuelled by the simmering dispute over FIFA’s decision to award the 2006 World Cup to Germany in preference to South Africa, taken last month by FIFA’s executive committee. Blatter appeared to have defused the furore by pushing through a decision to rotate future World Cup finals among the different continents, a move widely seen as favouring South African chances of getting the 2010 World Cup. But though nothing untoward was said in Congress itself, the mood outside was distinctly fractious. African delegates, furious that the four Asian members of FIFA’s executive had voted for Germany, who won the July 6 vote 12-11, decided to sever all relations with Asia. The African confederation said the action was taken because of "the lack of support of the Asian FIFA executive committee members in matters involving African interests within FIFA"… The two disputes came as a blow to Blatter who has had a troubled presidency since taking power two years ago but who had seemed to come through the Congress with his authority substantially enhanced. Apart from passing his rotation plan without opposition, he secured agreement for a coordinated international calendar from the year 2002, plans for a soccer court of arbitration and support for a renewed attempt to persuade the European Union to accept special rules for soccer on player transfers. "I am satisfied, I am happy and I am convinced that we have unity in the family of football," he told a news conference as the Congress ended. "It was for me the Congress where we had to show what what has happened in the past is over. Now everything is back to normal as it should be. "Shortly afterwards, he discovered the rifts emerging in the FIFA edifice and FIFA issued a statement denying Blatter had known of the Afro-Asian split. Blatter referred in his news conference to last year’s walkout by Asian delegates at FIFA’s extraordinary Congress in Los Angeles in a dispute over the allocation of places for the 2002 World Cup finals.

The traffic department should consider putting up traffic lights at that spot instead of a traffic circle. At least pre-schools do teach kids about the meanings of the different colours of the traffic lights. Safa appeal to Fifa

THE decision by the South African Football Association (Safa) to appeal against the Fifa decision to grant Germany the 2006 World Cup on the grounds that there were irregularities in the soccer world governing body’s voting process is more than welcome. How long will Africa continue to be bullied by Europe?

President Thabo Mbeki told the recent ANC general council meeting in Port Elizabeth that South Africa had not lost the bid because it was not ready to host the World Cup but because of global racism. Anyway, the Fifa decision to award Germany the bid was unacceptable to Africa and other right-thinking countries. The soccer World Cup tournament has for years been dominated by Europe. It is high time that the bid process was overhauled so the tournament can be truly international — and not continentally monopolised.

Banks wanted to scrap 2006 bid
BBC News – Aug 1, 2000
He said: “I gave my assessment (to the FA) and that initial view was that the hooligan issue made it very unlikely we could attract enough votes to win. “A whole range of options was discussed, including withdrawal, but it was unanimously decided to carry on until the vote. ”

The bid team, however, were persuaded to carry on by the Football Association, who did not want to be seen to be giving in to hooliganism. In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Banks said: “We just knew at that point (10 days before the vote), although there was an outside chance, to be absolutely realistic, we couldn’t do it.

This follows the withdrawal of the Black Meteors from the Merdeka tournament in Malaysia from August 8 to August 20. The withdrawal by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is in line with CAF’s decision to sever all ties with their Asian counterparts who supported Germany against South Africa in last month’s 2006 World Cup bid. Consequently, all Afro-Asia programmes, including the Merdeka event, will not be honoured by CAF until the working relation is restored.
