Should Wembley be confined to football?
BBC News – Dec 13, 2000
Neill,
England
I live in Wembley and in my opinion, it is disastrous for it to be a ‘football only’ stadium. A national stadium would solve the problem of football and the 2005 athletics, and would form the basis of an Olympic bid, which as a resident of Wembley I would like to see at a National stadium. A football stadium’s use is limited due to England losing the 2006 World Cup bid. In my opinion England knew that they were not going to win the 2006 bid, so why was Ken Bates given the responsibility for the stadium, when London was 99% sure that they WOULD get the 2005 athletics, which has the need for a stadium. Anon,

Lets all face up to the facts, football is our national sport and we should have a national stadium for football only

Andi Mc,
England

The number one sport in England should have its own stadium without any shadow of a doubt. Wembley was well known for having a good atmosphere, after all who will forget the game against Holland in Euro 96. The same atmosphere would be impossible with an athletics track.

World Cup hosts could be rotated
BBC News – Dec 8, 2000
The move appears to be as a result of the controversial World Cup 2006 voting process which saw Germany beat South Africa to stage the tournament. The outcome of the meeting is expected to be announced on Sunday afternoon. A Fifa official said there was general agreement on the principle of rotating the tournament, but warned against rushing into a decision. “Nothing must be hurried. The principle is accepted, but the
2006 World Cup has already been attributed so we have time to work,” said a Fifa official… A Fifa official said there was general agreement on the principle of rotating the tournament, but warned against rushing into a decision. “Nothing must be hurried. The principle is accepted, but the
2006 World Cup has already been attributed so we have time to work,” said a Fifa official. It has been suggested that unofficially the 2010 World Cup will be hosted by an African country. An official also added that proposals to let national team’s and referee’s at domestic level have advertising on their shirts had received a mixed response.

The event, organised biennially under the Meridian Agreement linking the Confederation of African Football with UEFA, its European counterpart, has been scheduled for January 27 to February 2 in Bari, Italy. With a junior tournament, a gala match of all-time greats and meetings, it promises to inject new life into an agreement that has had its ups and downs, particularly after the bitterly contested election for FIFA President in 1998. Europe is Africa’s main ally in world football circles since CAF broke off relations with Asia earlier this year, over South Africa’s failed 2006 World Cup bid. On the political front, the gathering will thus be a chance for the two continents to clear their lines on the big issues affecting the global game: club-versus-country, World Cup hosting and new rules on player transfers. On the pitch, the main business will be an Under-17 tournament involving four top teams from each side: Cameroon, Ghana, Mali and Nigeria for Africa, while Europe will be represented by Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic and Spain (winners of the last Meridian Cup, in 1999). A unique format has been adopted, so that for the first time in international football, players will represent their continent as well as their nation. Each side will play each of the teams from the other continent.

Inside Sport: Bates may forego lead role in Christmas show
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 15, 2000
This follows last week’s decision by the Football Association. Things are likely to become more clear this week, which could prove a critical one for English and international football… FA insiders say the whole Wembley project has been bedevilled by England’s failed bid to stage the 2006 World Cup. Had this bid not been made the FA would have probably have preferred a new national stadium on a greenfield site. Wembley’s costs have also been a concern. The FA are due to receive £800 million over three years starting next season from their new television deal, and while they may be prepared to invest £100 million in Wembley, they would not be keen to extend that figure by much. Wednesday’s meeting at Brussels between FIFA and UEFA and the European Commission will be focusing on the one main area that is still a major source of disagreement.

Racism and Late Kickoffs: Risking a Lost Generation of Fans

He was an inspiring player of the 1970s. He was part of the New York Cosmos attempt to stimulate a new soccer generation in the United States. What is more, Beckenbauer's plea for a children's hour is sure to reach the eyes and ears of those who count. Simon Inglis – Lock’s stock over a barrel: why Chris Smith should…
The Observer – Nov 19, 2000
The first is that London has to come up with a venue for the 2005 World Championships. If it fails, Berlin lies waiting in the wings. Having already lost the 2006 World Cup to Germany, national pride patently demands that Picketts Lock be made to work, regardless of whether it is right. The second is that nowhere in the world is athletics, as a sport, able to sustain and operate its own stadiums without considerable public subsidy. Athletics fans cannot even draw comfort from the success of the Sydney Olympics. On 23 November, the track graced by Cathy Freeman and others this summer will be dug up and moved to another part of the Homebush site. Stadium Australia will become an 80,000-capacity stadium for the various football codes.
