Football’s fight for independence
BBC News – Feb 2, 2001
But Caf and Fifa know they would require a government’s approval, for example, before a country could stage the World Cup or Nations Cup finals. There is a basic principle that is clearly acceptable globally whether in Africa or another confederation. And that is the autonomy that we expect in football – it is generally expected that football should not be subjected to political interference. And this is crucial because our game should not be polluted to the extent that a key player or participant or a key factor cannot participate in the game just because of what it is politically. And this of course is a general agenda that has made it possible for countries be they democracies or communists to be able to run their affairs – that is basic. But having said that these things can be seen from the point of view of certain limitations and in areas where there is enough funding to see certain programmes through, definitely no government is expected in any way to even show any interest because the private sector would have been in the position to cater for the needs of soccer. But in countries where sponsorship in particular has not yet reached the heights one could expect, one would say that we have to find the synthesis between the autonomy that we seek in football and the level to which government can show interest… But we’ve got to ensure that football within those precepts is protected, so at least within those precepts, club administration or at an internal level that it stands the test of time. But when it comes to international level, for example when a country is going to the World Cup there is no doubt that government would have an input. Don’t forget that when the proposals for World Cup 2006 were presented in Zurich last year before the hosts were announced all the politicians of the various bids were present. For Germany we heard Chancellor, Gerard Shroeder was there, Prime Minister Tony Blair (?) for the England bid, and president Mandela and the rest. So there is a way in which the veins and the arteries begin to find their levels, but its just that they all work towards the heart in such a way that the heart functions well. FIFA will not encourage FA’s to be at the mercy of governments. We like the position taken by FIFA.

SA delay 2010 cup bid

JOHANNESBURG – South Africa are delaying a bid to stage the 2010 World Cup until Fifa confirm the finals will be staged somewhere in Africa, the country’s soccer governing body said on Saturday. South African Football Association (Safa) chief executive Danny Jordaan said he was still awaiting confirmation from the sport’s governing body that a rotation system will be in place for 2010 – starting with Africa. His country narrowly lost the vote to stage the 2006 World Cup to Germany last year. Jordaan, who ran the unsuccessful bid, said South Africa were keen to try again. Blatter fights for political life
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 6, 2001
“Seventy-five million Swiss francs are missing in the [FIFA] accounts and now a judge is investigating where the money is and, if it has disappeared, for what it has been used,” Blatter told a news conference in Thailand. Revealing details of the transaction for the first time, Blatter said O Globo had made an advance payment to ISL in September 2000 rather than this year “because it had funds available then”. ISL then transferred the money to an unofficial account inaccessible to FIFA, he said. ISL had routinely deposited payments into a special account to which FIFA could withdraw funds, but in this case the funds did not turn up, a discovery that officials did not make until March of this year. “The money was not there and they didn’t know it until the beginning of March… Blatter became the most powerful man in football in 1998 after a. Next year, just before the start of the World Cup in South Korea and Japan, he will stand for another four years.

Sven’s grip on treasure trove
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 9, 2001
To be detached from England’s assorted manias surely helps. “The most important thing,” he said, “is that we reach this World Cup. “A World Cup, maybe, without Holland and Germany, forlorn, spectral almost, as they left the Olympic Stadium at funereal pace. Their coach, whom they adore, was in hospital, supporting his stricken father, and their captain and talisman, Oliver Kahn, as Mark Lawrenson observed, became “Oliver Can’t”. Assuming England now beat Albania and Greece, Germany are cast into the outer darkness of a play-off against Ukraine or Belarus, where the memory of Owen’s hat-trick and England’s brutal finishing will follow them to Minsk or Kiev. Credit for the flowering of Owen’s talent must go to Houllier,… And Owen is not the only one whose footsie index has soared. Eriksson was tempted away from Rome, but may turn out to be harder to keep. The official line, of course, is that he is contracted until 2006, and wants to lead England at two World Cups (the second of which is in Germany, where Eriksson is about as popular as Japanese cars). Yet chillingly there is no better candidate to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in August. Enough scaremongering. Eriksson’s imprint can already be seen in English footballing history, and he will not walk away from these players lightly, nor they, in their affections, from him.

This incredibly kick ass way to kick ass with a dumb ass name (that’s three asses!) first appeared in the movie Equilibrium where Christian Bale uses it to kill pretty much everyone. From there it’s shown up in way too many, ridiculously awful fan videos, and a few that are surprisingly cool, inspired some genuine martial artists to do their own choreographed performances of the style, and depending on which rabid fanboys you talk to, may or may not have appeared in director Kurt Wimmer’s spiritual sequel/suckfest Ultraviolet.Wrapping It Up Conclude your editorial by restating your main premise, using an especially powerful quote or anecdote that supports your point of view.
