England’s doomed World Cup bid
BBC News – Mar 8, 2001
The FA have compiled an 85-page report into the failed ?10m campaign and
McGivan told the hearing: “Uefa’s support for Germany right across the
board damaged us enormously. “Seven out of eight European delegates voted for
Germany. “Not to have the backing of your confederation from the start was, looking
back, very damaging. “It was very difficult to do deals, it was all block votes and confederation
wheeler-dealing, Asia were with Europe and Africa with South America, and we
were simply squeezed out.

England v Spain: Your verdict

A very competent and spirited team performance

Stephen, Thailand

A solid performance but let’s not forget that England have gone through a prolonged period of depressingly bad performances. Maybe that period is finally over, but let’s not expect too much too fast. My real hopes for England are for the world cup in 2006. Mark Parish,
USA

Players are always going to respond to the buzz generated by a new manager, so the performance was not a surprise even if the result was. Eriksson’s tactical know how can only be assessed in the context of a competitive and critical game not in a friendly. However, credit goes to him for having the courage to cap players others considered average and for allowing young players the opportunity to grow. The future is certainly bright regardless of what happens in the forthcoming qualifying games.

Eriksson’s feats attract United’s attentions

Eriksson, currently on a five-year contract, is an honourable man, not given to sudden changes of posts (with a due nod of acknowledgment to Blackburn Rovers). And why break off a relationship just when the fun is about to start? Eriksson has stressed time and again that the future of England is “beautiful” because of the many young players bursting through. He knows that even if Japan and South Korea proves only a learning experience, then England will be ready to graduate at the 2004 European Championships or 2006 World Cup finals. Probably only winning the World Cup next summer might alter Eriksson’s thinking. Eriksson also enjoys a good relationship with those high up at the FA, particularly David Dein, whom he has known for a long time, and Adam Crozier, who went against much of public opinion in appointing England’s first foreign coach. Crozier has always said that he himself will stand or fall by how well Eriksson fares; in which case, Crozier is standing pretty tall today. With the full and long-term support of Crozier and Dein, Eriksson has guided England towards Japan and South Korea, although he remains the diplomat.

Robbo lets it all out

No, there is not much the poor farmer, the most subsidised profession in the whole world, can do about it. It’s very sad, and if we have to surrender a few punts on the horses, then so be it. Fair enough, what would you like to bet on?

I would to bet on the fact that England WILL win the World Cup in 2006 with the mighty Swede in charge. Now we’re going to get some real sport again with the new Formula 1 season, according to Annie in Wiltshire. I think Schumacher’s got it won already. Are you a Formula 1 fan, Robbo?

This is a bit of a strange question, considering Schumacher crashed in his test drive on Friday

Yes, well that shows how much he knows. “She” being the operative word, but I don’t want to get into that… We’ll start with a clean sheet, and then we’ll see where the likes of Charlton, who have surpassed themselves this season by winning two games in a row, are next year. Let’s just stop baiting the lad who knows what he’s talking about in sport. Supporting a football club is not really about knowledge and wisdom, it’s about love. Let’s just leave it there. He mentions Chris Powell.

On the Spot: Carsten Jancker

In Munsing, the local football team were asked to rearrange their fixture list so all their early-season matches were away, thus making sure their pitch was in pristine condition for the arrival of Voller’s international millionaires. “The pitch was terrific and we have enjoyed the peace and quiet of the countryside,” said Voller, who was released from his contract with Bayer Leverkusen yesterday, leaving him free to manage Germany until the 2006 World Cup and beyond if he so wishes. “I have allowed the players time to relax. I let them leave the hotel for a while yesterday. Some went for a coffee and others met their wives and girlfriends for a chat… In Munsing, the local football team were asked to rearrange their fixture list so all their early-season matches were away, thus making sure their pitch was in pristine condition for the arrival of Voller’s international millionaires. Isa, who has not hidden his dislike for the poor performance of the Ghana national team in recent times, has come out to tell his countrymen to forget about getting to the world cup next year. “I have already forgotten about the 2002 World Cup,” says the man fondly called “Mallam. “He revealed that his priority now was to build a new Black Stars team that would qualify for the 2006 edition. “My target is 2006, which we will start working on now. ”
The minister believed the building up process will start on Sunday as the “new look’ Stars will battle Nigeria for prestige. Meanwhile, New Super Eagles sensational, Victor Agali of Hansa rostock, is already causing ripples in the whole of Ghana. The player whose sparkling form has stunned most analysts would be one of the strikers to look out for during the match. At the Independence cup match between Ashante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oaks, most people spoken to asked questions about the leggy striker. “Is he that good?”, asked one Kotoko fan Kwabena George.

And in case you don’t know what we could otherwise do with that kind of money, I will quickly mention only two in areas I consider of critical consequence to nation building. Why is it that in a country like Nigeria, where everyone from age zero to hundred is a football fanatic, only a few state capitals can boast of good stadiums? Seriously speaking, of all cries of marginalisation, no one to my mind has such potentially grave implications for national tranquility as this. But once we stop subsidising petrol, we could proceed forthwith to redress this obvious injustice by building for each local government, a new FIFA standard stadium commensurate with our status as a leading football nation in the world. Come to think of it, once we have all these facilities in place, we could even persuade Germany to concede the hosting rights to the 2006 World Cup to us plus all the socio-economic benefits derivable from such an enterprise. Secondly, with the great job Professor Jerry Gana is doing of the task of national orientation, does it not amount to a criminal waste of rare talent that he could only be watched by 30 million people? But with just $2billion, we could proceed immediately to erect an NTA station for each village and locality of the federation. This, we must know, is the only way to ensure that the gospel of national orientation is carried deep down to the grassroots. I understand the Professor himself is recommending only 64 new stations, what modesty!
Another major argument for the long overdue increase in fuel price is the nefarious activities of smugglers… Why is it that in a country like Nigeria, where everyone from age zero to hundred is a football fanatic, only a few state capitals can boast of good stadiums? Another major argument for the long overdue increase in fuel price is the nefarious activities of smugglers. I have heard people blame our dedicated officers and men of the customs service for the ease with which fuel is smuggled across the borders.
