Should 2010 World Cup go to Africa?
BBC News – Mar 22, 2001
There is enough time between now and then to build appropriate facilities. If it was about facilities, then the Olympics would not be taking place in Athens in 2004. What facilities have they got to boast at the moment?

Jeff Scholey,
UK

The football world cup should always be held in a country that proves that it has the best facilities available and wins the bid fair and square

Muhammad Akhtar,
Pakistan

African players have contributed so much to football all over the world and yet we still have to beg to host the World Cup! I hear people talk about crime rate – why has Mexico
been awarded the World Cup twice? Why was Argentina allowed to host the World Cup in 1978 at the time it was hardly a nation you could call stable. It seems that every stereotype in
the book is used to deny Africa the chance to host the World Cup. Nabil,
Canada

Now is the time for FIFA and the whole world to give Africa a chance to prove itself as a Football Super Power of the world. Yemi Animasaun,
United States of America

The football world cup should always be held in a country that proves that it has the best facilities available and wins the bid fair and square. Africa must win its right to hold world cup… Allister Webb,
England

Thankfully Fifa recognise the good football can do and are prepared to share the prestige and pride that comes from hosting the world’s greatest sporting tournament. Lee,
England

This rotation system is crazy! The right to stage this prestigious tournament should go to the best qualified country at the time. I think South Africa should have won the right to stage the 2006 World Cup instead of Germany, but to be handed the the tournment for 2010 without any other country being allowed to bid is wrong. Who’s to say they will be in a position both politically and economically to stage it in the future?

N. Takla,
USA

Fifa has made the right decision!! It is about time that Africa proves to itself and the rest of the world that it can manage to host something world- wide like the Olympic Games and in this case the World Cup. Let Africa bring forth its African Magic and show the world that Africa and Africans can arrange such an event and run it in style: African style. Let the prelimenaries be arranged on a regional basis from North to South and East to West and the final can take place in South Africa.

SA will bid for 2010 World Cup – Jordaan
Dispatch Online – Mar 26, 2001
Danny Jordaan, who headed the unsuccessful South African bid for the 2006 World Cup, said yesterday the South African Football Association (Safa) had decided to bid again for the event. This follows reports from the world controlling body, Fifa, that the 2010 World Cup will be held in Africa and that bids from that continent are the only ones that will be allowed. Jordaan warned though that the situation regarding Fifa was not yet clear, as it had not confirmed that the 2010 World Cup would definitely be held in Africa. “There have been reports, but nothing has been signed and sealed yet,” he said. South Africa controversially lost the bid to host the 2006 World Cup by a single vote to Germany after the Oceania delegate, Charles Dempsey, decided to abstain from voting in the final round.

South Africa launches Cup bid
BBC News – Mar 25, 2001
The South African Football Association (Safa) confirmed it would be making a second successive attempt to win the right to stage the tournament after a meeting in Port Elizabeth. Last year South Africa failed in its bid for the 2006 World Cup finals after Germany won by a single vote amid controversy. Safa’s confirmation of its 2010 bid was widely expected and means South Africa joins African rivals Morocco in the race. Egypt and Tunisia have also expressed an interest in hosting the finals. Last week Fifa, world football’s governing body, announced on its website that the principle of rotating the World Cup finals between the six continental federations would begin with Africa in 2010… The South African Football Association (Safa) confirmed it would be making a second successive attempt to win the right to stage the tournament after a meeting in Port Elizabeth. (OTI), buying collectively on behalf of its members, who then reaped an ad windfall. Free-to-air broadcasters in Argentina and Mexico together anted up almost $20 million for the 1998 cup, but the extra ad spend was worth roughly $100 million to Mexico alone that year. But in December, DirecTV Latin America scored the exclusive TV and radio rights for those two countries as well as Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Venezuela to the 2002 and 2006 World Cup finals, and some other Federation Internationale de Football Assn. The deal is being valued at $400 million. “This is a very strategic deal for us,” says Milton Torres, DirecTV Latin America senior veep of programming, marketing and sales, who handled the FIFA negotiations. The World Cup will help drive sales, but also boost subscriber satisfaction — and the DirecTV brand.

Time to deliver goods – Keane
Irish Independent – Mar 23, 2001
At 29, Keane knows this is probably his last shot at another World Cup final. While the 2004 European Championships are a possible target, it’s odds against that he’ll be around, snapping at everyone’s heels, by the time of the 2006 World Cup. He’ll be pushing 35 then and no longer able to call the shots at the top level. For him, it’s now or never for another stab at international football’s greatest prize. He’s had six summers off in a row and there’s only so much a restless spirit like him can do on holidays… At 29, Keane knows this is probably his last shot at another World Cup final. Although quite settled in the German capital, he looks forward to a move for more playing time. Tony Sanneh’s Hertha Berlin plays in one of the world’s most famous stadiums: “It’s very old, and it’s under reconstruction [for the 2006 World Cup], but [it] has a big historical significance. It’s a stadium that Hitler built for the 1936 Olympics, and Jesse Owens ran there. [Owens’] name is still on the wall there, and you can see places where the swastikas are polished away, but you know that they were there. The stadium’s been there for a long time, and a lot of things have happened there… “German football isn’t that aesthetically pleasing. There aren’t many teams that play good football; they have more the fighting mentality. It’s a little bit disheartening because I think it’s going too much that way without being willing to change. They’re going to go to where England was, where they are just kicking the ball and fighting for it. I think for their country to develop and stay on top of the world — where they were 10 years ago — they have to change with the world.
