It’s official – Africa will get 2010
Independent Online – Apr 1, 2001
But sources involved in the rotation study have confirmed that their report could be finished within four months and put before the Fifa executive committee at their meeting in Buenos Aires in July. The shake up comes in the wake of controversy surrounding the election of 2006 hosts Germany in July 2000. South Africa was beaten in its bid for candidacy for the 2006 World Cup when Germany pipped them by one vote after Charlie Dempsey, Oceania’s representative on the Fifa executive committee, abstained from the final round of voting, causing an international outcry. Fifa said earlier this month that South Africa would be a front runner to host 2010. “It is the best placed. There are not too many countries in Africa capable of holding such a massive tournament,” said one source. Blatter also took time out on Sunday to condemn racism in football… “It is the best placed. There are not too many countries in Africa capable of holding such a massive tournament,” said one source. Blatter also took time out on Sunday to condemn racism in football. “It’s a shame on football,” he said. “Another devil is the falsification of passports. Assosiations should take sanctions against the players and the clubs,” Blatter said as trials and investigations proceed in Europe, most notably in France and Italy. On a day when the Fifa president wasn’t mincing his words he also sent out a clear message to those governments trying to exercise influence over their national football associations, in particularily Guinea who are currently subject to a Fifa international competition ban.

Danny Jordaan: Keeping Vision 2010 alive
Independent Online – Mar 31, 2001
After narrowly losing to Germany for the 2006 event, Safa agreed at a meeting in Port Elizabeth last week to launch a bid for the 2010 event. Jordaan and Irvin Khoza, who ran the 2006 campaign as CEO and chairman respectively, have been mandated to put together a strong bid. Although Fifa are believed to have taken a decision to put a rotation system in place and award Africa the 2010 World Cup, it is still not a forgone conclusion that South Africa will get the nod.

if they qualify

Football fans in the UK will be able to watch every game of the 2002 World Cup Finals on free-to-air television, the government has insisted. It says the German owners of the rights to the finals in Japan and South Korea will not be able to sell them to a subscription or pay-TV service… ”

But a spokesman for ITV said: “We believe that an auction is about to take place for the rights and there’s
still a real fear that games other than the home nations, semi-finals and final,
will not be available on free-to-air television. 5 bn for the rights to both the 2002 and 2006 World Cup Finals. Under the rules of football’s world governing body Fifa, all games involving home nations plus the semi-final and
final have to be screened on free-to-air TV. But Kirch are not bound to provide any other matches if broadcasters do not

An incredible story has surfaced in the World Football Bulletin, which is available only to exclusive subscribers of this internationally renowned newsletter. FIFA wants to expand the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams for the 2006 tournament in Germany, according to well-placed sources. Probably the most interesting part of the plan by FIFA president Sepp Blatter is to add to give Europe 20 slots in the quadrennial tournament, while Africa and Asia would get seven berths apiece. South America and CONCACAF would be increased to six teams apiece and Oceania would be awarded two spots, the Bulletin reported. Reliable sources close to the FIFA executive committee have confirmed world soccer’s governing body is ready to announce the plan as early as this Sunday at the organization’s headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland… An incredible story has surfaced in the World Football Bulletin, which is available only to exclusive subscribers of this internationally renowned newsletter. Incredible as it may sound, the European part of the proposal would allow the minnows of the continent — a group that includes the Faroe Islands, Andorra and Luxembourg, among others — to qualify for the World Cup via a special group.

So, Robbo, what did you make of England’s win over Albania?

What a marvellous result. I was very impressed with Eriksson to the extent that I will say here on record “we will win the World Cup in 2002 and return it in 2006. ”

Eriksson is to British football what Einstein was to, er, whatever it was he did. But I’d have to question his decision to stand by Andy Cole. Yeah he scored but he only scores when it doesn’t matter. He won’t last much longer.

How good was England’s display?
BBC News – Mar 28, 2001
Was it more important for England to play attractive football or gain that vital away victory?

The win in Tirana means England’s hopes of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup are still alive. But they struggled before finally imposing themselves on the game. Andy Cole finally silenced the critics with a goal. How did you rate his overall contribution to the game?

Who was England’s Man of the Match? Did Sven’s team selection play dividends on the night?

On the evidence of the displays against Finland and Albania, is Sven going about things the right way?

It was only after the game had finished and I changed channels to watch Spain v France that I realised how poor England are in comparison to other major footballing nations. The levels of skill, ball control, vision & execution just do not compare… Well done Sven for sticking by your own opinions rather than those of the press. Gary English,
UK

After the last 2 games I am convinced that England are on the verge of regaining her crown as the world’s supreme footballing force. We can win the World Cup and we will. Jamie Coventry,
England

“For the first 75 mins we were poor, there didnt seem to be any continuity with the play”

Paul Hitch, England

What was very apparent last night was that England continues to lack that player who can dictate play from central midfield. Beckham isn’t the answer; he is too much of a one-touch player. Scholes goes missing too much. The French have Zidane, the Brazilians have Rivaldo and Djalminja, the Portuguese have Figo and Rui Costa, the Italians have Totti, the Finns have Litmanen, the Argentineans have Ortega, Veron, Gallardo or Aimar and the Dutch have Seedorf.

Now it could be June or even early July. This week Walker met another banker, who may join J P Morgan in trying to make sure he succeeds. FIFA are to organise a seminar on racism in football in July when they hold their Congress in Buenos Aires. The world governing body have been concerned about racism,… Danny Jordaan, who led the South African 2006 World Cup bid, will head the seminar on what is seen as a problem only on the continent, which has a lot of black players in clubs but, unlike England, very few in national teams. The exception to this is Emmanuel Olisadebe, the Nigerian-born player who plays for Poland and whose goalscoring has helped Poland win four out of five qualifying matches, taking them to the top of the group that includes Wales, and has gone some way to changing the attitudes in a country notorious for its racism and historic anti-Semitism. The Poles were so impressed with him that he got a Polish passport in 10 months when it normally takes 10 years. Before his arrival as an unlikely Polish hero, the few black players in Polish clubs were regularly showered with bananas and greeted with monkey chants, but Olisadebe is feted, even pictured on newspaper front pages, as he was on Thursday. FIFA intend to use him as an example of how racism can be combated.
