Probe starts into tragedy
Independent Online – Apr 13, 2001
All weekend soccer fixtures were cancelled and a helpline and disaster fund were set up. Very quickly, officials launched an offensive against speculation that South Africa’s ambitions to host the World Cup in 2010 were now well and truly scotched. “The World Cup is nearly 10 ten years away,” said Danny Jordaan, leader of the unsuccessful 2006 bid. “There is very little evidence, anywhere, that disasters of any kind – a volcano or whatever – have an impact 10 years hence,” he said. At Ellis Park, scene of the 1995 rugby world cup final, there was a strange sense of futility, masked by a rather distasteful attempt at business as usual – or was it good old-fashioned South African amnesia? By midday, the football goals in the all-seater stadium had been replaced by rugby posts and a team of workmen had dyed a Vodacom logo into the grass ahead of Saturday’s match between Western Province and the Golden Lions. ‘The World Cup is nearly 10 ten years away’
Two wreaths on the grass, from the “rugby sport lodge” and the management of Ellis Park were the only sign that something was wrong – until you walked up the gradual concrete steps of a two-metre-wide corridor, leading through the red plastic seats up to a tunnel at Gate 4. Halfway up the steps, a metal barrier dividing the passage in two had been flattened.

SA counts the cost of worst soccer disaster

But it seems that when the tickets ran out, people started fighting to get in. The security people could not cope with the pressure of people. ”

The tragedy is also a major blow for South African aspirations to bid for the 2010 World Cup after it narrowly lost out to Germany for the 2006 event. Last night soccer fans spoke of the horror of bodies stacked outside and inside the stadium as emergency workers and police struggled to resuscitate some of the injured. Lost children searched desperately for their parents. Husbands wives, lovers and friends separated from their loved ones desperately searching trying to find them in the aftermath of the the stampede. Newton Ndlovu, 32, “I was hit by a body of people and blacked out, When I came too I could not find my wife, I groped and looked for her and couldn’t find her… Where was security? I don’t know where my wife is. ”

Now Michael Phiri, a 31-year-old Pirates fan said: “The stadium was just too small, the tickets sold out, and the security people were overwhelmed by the crowd. I have never seen anything like this in South African football. ”

Premier Soccer League PRO Andrew Dipela said after last night’s tragedy that tickets were on sale at the stadium prior to last night’s tragic Castle Premiership match. However, he refused to speculate or be drawn on what time that the tickets were sold out. “It would be wrong of me to speculate on when tickets were sold out. Tickets were pre-sold at Ellis Park and the Kaizer Chiefs Village.

ISL hold the rights to both the 2002 and 2006 World Cup but the company now faces liquidation, throwing coverage of both tournaments into turmoil. The company have been given ten days by a Swiss judge to appeal against being refused permission to delay bankrupcy proceedings. It is understood that ISL owes football’s world governing body millions of Swiss francs in unsold sponsorship deals and Fifa’s nine-man emergency committee, which only meets under rare circumstances, has now to decide on a contingency plan.

Ghana sack national coach
BBC News – Apr 23, 2001
Under Attuquayefio, who was appointed just about four months ago, Ghana lost three matches in a row but drew with Nigeria 0-0 and defeated DR Congo 3-0. The GFA said they also looked at the fixture congestion involving Hearts of Oak this year in both the defence of their African title and the World Club Championship in Spain later this year. World Cup over

Ghana have never qualified for the World Cup and the national team has seen almost a dozen coaches in a decade. ”

There had been a contractual dispute between the FA and Attuquayefio as well. Attuquayefio has sued the FA, claiming that he is owed a signing-on fee of $30,000 and “arrears” of $5,000 since he took over.

Nigeria Renews Bid for Hosting Right
This Day – This Day (subscription) – Apr 16, 2001
A highly placed official of the Sports Ministry who disclosed this to THISDAYSports, stated that a committee had commenced work on the project to ensure that Nigeria joined the race in which South Africa, Egypt and Morocco are top contenders for the hosting right. The committee’s report which is expected in the next few weeks, would be thoroughly screened by the apex sporting authority and the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), before it would be presented to the Presidency for final approval. According to the sports administrator, the country, which bidded for the 2006 hosting right before it was awarded to Germany under controversial circumstances, possessed the required facility to host the world’s biggest soccer fiesta. “We are confident that if the Presidency gives moral support and other necessary assistance, Nigeria’s chances of securing the right for 2010 is very bright,” he enthused… A highly placed official of the Sports Ministry who disclosed this to THISDAYSports, stated that a committee had commenced work on the project to ensure that Nigeria joined the race in which South Africa, Egypt and Morocco are top contenders for the hosting right. THISDAYSports also gathered that Nigeria which is currently building up for the All African Games in 2003, had hoped that success of the game would rub off positively on the country’s chances of clinching the World Cup hosting right. FIFA President Sepp Blatter who did not hide his disappointment when Africa was denied the chance of hosting her first ever World Cup finals last year, recently confirmed that the continent would take the first turn in the newly introduced rotational formular. The formular which was vehemently opposed by Europe which hosted most of the finals since the event debuted in 1930, was recently approved by the Executive Committee of the world football authority during its meeting in Zurich, Switzerland.

Fifa cautious about impact of tragedy
Dispatch Online – Apr 13, 2001
“We must have the decency to bury the dead first,” Blatter said. “Priority then must be to obtain complete and exhaustive findings by the competent authorities on the causes of this latest tragedy in our game so that lessons can be drawn for the future. Football must do everything in its power that such disasters do not occur again. ”

With Fifa set to bring in a system of rotating the confederations and Africa apparently first on the list, South Africa would be the leading candidate, especially after coming so close for the 2006 event, losing out by one vote to Germany. But whatever caused the tragedy during the Kaizer Chiefs-Orlando Pirates game at Ellis Park on Wednesday will be viewed as a negative factor — unless it leads to major improvements in safety. “I don’t think we should rush to condemn South Africa just because it’s South Africa,” Fifa director of communications Keith Cooper said. “Fifa made the decision that the World Cup would first go to the continent of Africa — not necessarily South Africa — but we are a long way away from deciding this… But whatever caused the tragedy during the Kaizer Chiefs-Orlando Pirates game at Ellis Park on Wednesday will be viewed as a negative factor — unless it leads to major improvements in safety. “I don’t think we should rush to condemn South Africa just because it’s South Africa,” Fifa director of communications Keith Cooper said. “Fifa made the decision that the World Cup would first go to the continent of Africa — not necessarily South Africa — but we are a long way away from deciding this. “This is a tragedy of considerable proportions, four dozen people have been killed and it’s being taken extremely seriously. But as far as 2010 is concerned it is still along time away,” Cooper told BBC Radio. “There are lessons to be learned and hopefully we can put it right, just as was the case in England after the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy. ”

In South Africa’s favour is the fact that England staged the 1996 European Championship seven years after the Hillsborough tragedy and, six years after 13 people died when a temporary stand collapsed at a game at Bastia, Corsica, France staged the 1998 World Cup.

Pantani, 31, who won the 1998 Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, also withdrew from of the Tour of the Basque Country this month, due to recurring bronchitis. Giuseppe Martinelli, the Mercatone team manager, said: “It’s better for him to train on roads he knows and in more favourable climatic conditions. “OlympicsEngland could face a repeat of their battle with Germany to stage the 2006 World Cup if they move forward with plans to host the 2012 Olympics in London. The British Olympic Association are considering bidding for the Games in 11 years’ time but it was announced yesterday that German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is to meet national Olympic committee officials this week to discuss a German campaign. Ice HockeyBritain’s ice hockey coach, Chris McSorley, yesterday walked out of a press conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia, after he was accused of paying the Finnish referee when Britain beat Kazakhstan 11-2 in Division 1 of the World Championships. The win leaves Britain on the verge of gaining promotion to the World Championships proper, the third successive year they have been in this position. The controversy erupted because, before the game, Britain were tied for the gold medal place with the host nation who had a two-goal margin in the tournament overall.

Zagorakis backed in drugs row
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 17, 2001
The 29-year-old, now at AEK Athens, was tested after a league game against Kalamata last month and faces a possible two-year ban. Nikos Stratos, his club’s managing director, has publicly backed the player, who claims that antibiotics prescribed by the club doctor to treat a cold were responsible for the positive test. Zagorakis will have his future decided by Greek football authorities, a UEFA spokeswoman said. “Zagorakis, who recently captained Greece against Germany, has been left out of the friendly against Croatia this month. FIFA will hold crisis talks on World Cup broadcasting rights after the company responsible for distributing them admitted they face liquidation… “Zagorakis, who recently captained Greece against Germany, has been left out of the friendly against Croatia this month. FIFA will hold crisis talks on World Cup broadcasting rights after the company responsible for distributing them admitted they face liquidation. While ISL try to delay bankruptcy proceedings in a Swiss court, FIFA will make sure they have contingency plans in place if the multi-million pound deal to cover the rights to the 2002 and 2006 tournaments collapses. Everton have condemned those fans who disrupted the minute’s silence before the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Monday. On the 12th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster supporters were asked to pay tribute to the 95 Liverpool fans who died as well as the.

Eli Manning looked remarkably improved, yet this was negated by his inability to make two simple passes in the dying minutes of the game. One can’t help but think same old Eli and same old 0 2 Giants. They are now developing a reputation as chokers and we’re barely two weeks into the season. Admittedly, New York’s season should not be completely written off, especially as they were able to get the better of the Cowboys and Falcons for the most part. Nevertheless, if their inability to close out the fourth quarter continues, the losses will mount up and Tom Coughlin’s seat will only get warmer. As the city of Baltimore, his team mates, and all Baltimore Raven fans are both shocked and saddened by the news of Ray Lewis’ retirement, the rest of the NFL are now all breathing a sigh of relief. Ray Lewis is one of those players who you either love, or you don’t. There is no middle ground on this feeling for good old Ray. I know quite a few Steeler fans who are celebrating after hearing this announcement. I’m sure that there are many of the other NFL team’s fans who feel this same kind of jubilation, and cheap nfl jerseys china joy.Think it personally not a good thing, I think it a terrible thing. And, you know, maybe he should find a country cheap jerseys that works better for him. Let him try, it won happen. Trump argument, however, rings more familiar than some of the others. Where have we heard this before? Oh, right. Here:This tragic event took place over 51 years ago. I was ten years old and can stilll remember that day vividly. I had come home from school for lunch. I was in the fifth grade at Fullerton Elementary School in Cleveland, Ohio. Back then, you had to go home for lunch. There were no buses and sure as heck, no car rides from your parents! I remember walking home without a care in the world.Menu price increases and adjustments taken during the past 12 months at company owned restaurants were about 3.1%. We had 100 additional company owned Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants in operation at the end of this quarter versus first quarter last year, a 20% unit increase. Average weekly sales decreased by 3.1% in the first quarter, 140 basis points lower than the same store sales percentage. This is attributed to a 90 basis point decline from company owned locations opened during the last 12 months and a 60 basis points decline from the locations acquired from franchisees in the past year. This was partially offset by 10 basis points from the closing of older, lower volume locations. Our royalty and franchise fee revenue cheap jerseys for the first quarter decreased 5% to $24.3 million versus $25.6 million last year, with seven fewer franchised Buffalo Wild Wings units in operation at the end of the first quarter versus a year ago due to our franchise acquisitions.
