EURO 2004 STADIUM DESIGN CONTRACT IN DOUBT
sportbusiness.com – Sep 27, 2001
The project is currently the centre of some political controversy and all the entrants have been invited to submit modifications to their proposals. Led by SOM Design director, Larry Oltmanns, who recently relocated to SOM?s London office, the 30,000 -seater stadium has been designed for use in The European Championships, July 2004. Said Oltmanns: ? After the games, we would not expect to see 30,000 people assembled again in such a small region so the design allows the structure to evolve. Half of the seats are temporary in nature, allowing them to be recycled… The project is currently the centre of some political controversy and all the entrants have been invited to submit modifications to their proposals. It?s a new idea about resource conservation, environmental sensitivity and sustainability.

NI’s morale-boost in Malta
BBC News – Oct 7, 2001
But fifth place means Northern Ireland will be among the lower seeds again when the draw for the next European Championships takes place in January. And when it does get underway, do not be surprised if Northern Ireland manager Sammy McIlroy and his assistant Jimmy Harvey are watching from the stand, not the touchline. Both were incredibly sent-off in separate second half incidents in Valetta. And the silly episode soured Northern Ireland’s win. McIlroy was guilty of hitting Maltese striker Michael Misfud with the ball.

Time for a new beginning
BBC News – Oct 7, 2001
It’s just a crying shame the dance routine included a twist as well. What we really, really wanted was for the Wee Man to walk out the door with a smile on his face and his dignity intact. I am not sure that either really happened. The former Scotland boss is an outstanding human being and a thorough gem to the media who has never refused an interview, no matter how awkward the time or location and who always, but always, had time for the Tartan Army. In the sometimes shifty world of football management he was the Gentleman Boss. Of course none of that guarantees you to be a good coach. But as it happens he was… Our international team and standing is at an all-time low and nothing less than the appointment of a football sorcerer is going to save us. And sorcerers don’t come cheap. The time has come for a little bit of big-time thinking, because at the very least they will have to quadruple the wages they paid to Brown, plus offer the incentive of say ?1m if the new man takes us to the finals of Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006. It is a simple rule of business. You have to speculate to accumulate. My guess is that the SFA are actually further down the line than we give them credit for because it should have come as a shock to no-one that Craig Brown would walk out of Hampden for the last time as national boss in the early hours of Saturday night. I would suggest to you that there is already a friendly arranged for the play-off date in November when the new man might be christened.

McGibbon wants more action
BBC News – Oct 3, 2001
Drafted in by manager Sammy McIlroy after Aaron Hughes pulled out on Friday with a hamstring injury, McGibbon is adamant that will not happen this time. He has not featured much under McIlroy, playing just one game
during his reign in a friendly against Luxembourg in February 2000. But with McIlroy soon to turn his thoughts towards preparations for the Euro
2004 qualifiers, which start next year, the 28-year-old centre-half wants to be part of his plans… Drafted in by manager Sammy McIlroy after Aaron Hughes pulled out on Friday with a hamstring injury, McGibbon is adamant that will not happen this time. contribution to Northern Ireland.

No quick Brown decision
BBC News – Sep 7, 2001
“However, these discussions will necessarily be confidential and no public comment will be made about their progress until the matter is fully resolved. “The position of team manager is crucial to the future of Scottish international football. “Although everyone at the SFA shares the disappointment of our apparent failure to qualify for the World Cup, it would be entirely wrong for us to rush into any decisions, particularly as the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign is not likely to start until next September. “I can confirm that Craig remains in position and under contract as international team manager.

O’Neill urges Lambert rethink
BBC News – Sep 8, 2001
Lambert’s time on the international
stage looks set to come to an end against Latvia next month. The 32-year-old stated before the Croatia game that he would retire from the national
side if Scotland failed to qualify for the finals in Japan and South Korea and
Wednesday’s defeat in Belgium has done little to change his mind. But his club boss believes that it is too early for him to turn his back on
Scotland and can still be influential in helping them qualify for Euro 2004. “I think that he is playing exceptionally well for us and I suppose club form is all you
can every judge it on… “I think that he is playing exceptionally well for us and I suppose club form is all you
can every judge it on. “I think you should always play until you feel that you can’t give any more
and certainly his performances in the second game, against Belgium, and not the
first game, would suggest he has something to offer Scotland at this minute. “Obviously they have a couple of players coming towards the end of their
careers and my own view is that he should hang on in there a little bit longer
until the manager tells him not to bother. “I think he should reconsider. I think he should really give it a lot of
thought. “I think Paul’s one of these boys who is suffering from the disappointment –
and it looks like Scotland won’t qualify.

Ireland to top England in European seedings
Irish Independent – Oct 10, 2001
UEFA’s executive committee will decide the format of the qualifying campaign this weekend in Prague, where they are expected to opt for ten groups of five teams, with the 16 qualifiers coming from the ten group winners, five play-off winners and hosts Portugal. A UEFA spokesman said yesterday that the seedings will be decided on results in the qualifying campaigns for Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup, with the number of points gained being divided by the games played to obtain the co-efficient. On that basis, Ireland, with a co-efficient of 2. 22, after amassing 40 points from 18 games, are among the nine highest-ranked teams who will join defending champions France in the first seed pot when the qualifying draw is made in Oporto on January 25 next year.

We tend to think that emotions such as fear and anger cause our hearts to speed up. According to the two factor theory of emotion, it’s the other way around. When you meet a 15 foot tall grizzly bear in the woods, your body doesn’t have time to ask your brain about feelings. Instinct takes over and turns your heart into an internal combustion engine. According to the theory, it’s only later that we come up with “an emotional interpretation of that arousal” and decide we were scared.”A lot of people are crowding into the marijuana industry because they think they are going to be able to sell fake oakleys a legal good at illegal prices,” Klieman said. “Competition’s not going to allow that.
