Controversial Caf plan wins support
BBC News – Oct 10, 2001
Caf has mooted an idea which would see the African Cup of Nations being used as a qualifer for the World Cup in 2006. And Caf says Fifa have agreed to the idea in principle. “It’s only Fifa’s written approval we’re waiting for but it’s obvious the 2006 Nations Cup will be used to select Africa’s five teams for the World Cup in the same year,” Caf spokesman Viken Djizmedjian told BBC Sport Online… “Because of the pressure on national associations, some of them can’t find good dates for their own domestic competitions,”Djizmedjian added. Many of Africa’s top players are based in Europe and in the recent past there have been many club vs country rows over the release of players for international matches. Point of debate

Djizmedjian said the Caf decision, although unpopular among football fans and pundits, was the only way out of the logjam. “You can’t please everyone and it will always remain a point of debate. But as administrators we have to take a decision. ”

He scoffed at the suggestion that European clubs forced Caf to take the decision, adding: “If anyone dictated to us at all, it’s our own member associations. ”

Djizmedjian also dismissed another suggestion that the decision will favour the teams who have a lucky Nations Cup run and particularly the hosts through ‘home advantage’.

Time for a new beginning
BBC News – Oct 7, 2001
I am not sure that either really happened. The former Scotland boss is an outstanding human being and a thorough gem to the media who has never refused an interview, no matter how awkward the time or location and who always, but always, had time for the Tartan Army. In the sometimes shifty world of football management he was the Gentleman Boss. Of course none of that guarantees you to be a good coach. But as it happens he was… Our international team and standing is at an all-time low and nothing less than the appointment of a football sorcerer is going to save us. And sorcerers don’t come cheap. The time has come for a little bit of big-time thinking, because at the very least they will have to quadruple the wages they paid to Brown, plus offer the incentive of say ?1m if the new man takes us to the finals of Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006. It is a simple rule of business. You have to speculate to accumulate. My guess is that the SFA are actually further down the line than we give them credit for because it should have come as a shock to no-one that Craig Brown would walk out of Hampden for the last time as national boss in the early hours of Saturday night. I would suggest to you that there is already a friendly arranged for the play-off date in November when the new man might be christened.

Storm clouds over World Cup airwaves
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 13, 2001
No one has come forward. The reasons for this whole mess are twofold. Firstly, Kirch paid far too much at the outset: £1. 6 billion for rights to the 2006 World Cup as well as 2002. Secondly, since Kirch bought the rights, the recession has kicked in and the potential income to broadcasters who live on advertising revenue has dipped sharply. This is all, of course,.

International Herald Tribune – Oct 12, 2001
Kirch guaranteed 1. 3 billion Swiss francs ($800 million) to FIFA, soccer's world governing body, for the rights to 2002. Kirch also has guaranteed FIFA 1. 5 billion Swiss francs for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. Those, at least, will be in Europe instead of in Japan and South Korea, where the time difference means live matches in the morning and early afternoon in Europe: another reason for the sticker shock this time around, along with the difficult current advertising market. But FIFA officials do not sound contrite about the price hike, despite increasingly intense lobbying from politicians sensing a juicy cause and increasing questions about whether sports television rights are near or past their peak. "The 1998 World Cup as a whole cost the international consortium 135 million Swiss francs, which means that each game more or less cost them in terms of rights 2 million Swiss francs," said one FIFA employee, who declined to be named, this week.

ML: I was in the British Airways lounge on Friday and he was in there with his lad, Brooklyn. Beckham’s such a shy lad, but it was amazing, because everyone stopped and watched him come in. Even the business types who work in the City and have probably got no interest in football stopped what they were doing. Ian Fawcett, England

It’s great to be in the World Cup finals, but I feel that a poor England performance overshadowed another Premiership player’s great feat – that of Niall Quinn becoming Ireland’s all-time record goal scorer. This surely deserved more coverage than it received. ML: Quinny’s been trying to break the record for 16 months, and when it came it was a classic far post header. It’s unfortunate that the coverage was dominated by England, but nonetheless it’s been a great performance by Mick McCarthy.

Caf qualifies for criticism
BBC News – Oct 9, 2001
The reason is grounded in the new international calendar that Fifa hope to have in effect next year. This in turn follows decades of bleating from European
clubs about the commitments that their African players have to compete for their respective national teams back on the continent. The pressure of the international calendar means the World Cup and African Nations Cup qualifiers can no longer run in tandem as they have every four
years for decades now. Qualifiers should be played midweek, as they are in Europe without any damage to domestic league programmes

Mark Gleeson

Or so it is said, although I have previously written
about the fact that qualifiers should be played midweek, as they are in Europe without any damage to domestic league programmes, both in Africa and in Europe. As a result of this new initiative, the World Cup qualifiers will now fall away and the Nations Cup will be used to determine who goes to the World Cup finals. Thoroughly unfair

It will be a travesty for African football, but more unfortunately a thoroughly unfair way to determine the African representatives for the biggest
sporting show in the world. For a start, no tournament should be used as a qualifying mechanism… Qualifiers should be played midweek, as they are in Europe without any damage to domestic league programmes

It will be a travesty for African football, but more unfortunately a thoroughly unfair way to determine the African representatives for the biggest
sporting show in the world. For a start, no tournament should be used as a qualifying mechanism. A tournament lasts just a couple of weeks but a proper qualifying campaign, as we have had in Africa for more than a decade now, is played over a year’s
period in groups with the traditional round-robin league.

Advocaat stays coy over cause of Rangers’ injury plague
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 8, 2001
“Barry’s injury is not serious but he will probably be out longer than the medical staff expected. We will wait and see,” he said. “There is nothing wrong with the facilities here. There is nothing wrong with the training – we have trained for a hundred years like this – but the chairman and I have talked about this… We are ticking along nicely at the moment – it’s going really well,” he said. “You know how I like to play things down but I have to say that the type of football we are playing at the moment is akin to what Celtic can do and did in the past – and I’m talking about the more distant past. I’m not saying that we’re going to win the European Cup, but by the same token I have read a lot about Ajax not playing well. We played so well, though, that we would have caused a lot of teams problems. “Celtic will be greeted rapturously when they take the field against Heart of Midlothian at Celtic Park today, and if they extend their winning streak they will go clear at the top of the league, at least until the outcome of the match between Dunfermline and Rangers is known. Alan Thompson and Joos Valgaeren are doubtful for Celtic, but Hearts have Steven Pressley available again. Elsewhere, there is an attractive looking encounter between Dundee – who await international clearance to play Dario Morelli – and the newcomers, Livingston, who have a spring in their step and are virtually at full strength.

To be blunt, Russell has shown me and fellow Raider Nation members very little in his 3 years in the league. Obviously, he has the cannon arm but it takes much more than that to Replica Oakley Sunglasses be a successful NFL QB just ask Jeff George. Furthermore, Russell has not shown much of a work ethic since the Raiders invested pretty much their entire franchise with him 3 years ago. Truthfully, I wanted www.buyoakleysunglasses.com and still wished the Raiders had drafted Brady Quinn rather than Russell as I think Quinn has all the tools to be a fine QB in this league for a long time to come if the Browns ever give him the chance. I just don’t see that out of Russell and apparently the Raiders are getting concerned as well or they would not have signed free agent QB Jeff Garcia to “backup” Russell. I have news for you folks. If Russell starts off slowly which is a real possibility seeing as though the Raiders have an absolutley brutal schedule this year Garcia will be in there. Until Russell shows some fire Wholesale China Jerseys underneathth his ass don’t go anywhere near him on draft day this August even as a number 2 QB.
