“The real fight is now. Some have suggested that failure to qualify might be a good thing because Germany would then be forced to build a new team and rethink the way they play football. But Vogts said the young players in the current squad needed the experience of next year’s finals to prepare for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. “Those who say it would be better for us not to be at the World Cup are wrong,” he said. “Players like Sebastian Kehl and Sebastian Deisler need to play a World Cup in order to be successful in 2006. Cup exiled by new Europhiles

The Champions League is probably the biggest culprit, after the Football Association. The bronze for finishing third in the Premiership is now more highly valued than an FA Cup winner’s medal, which used to confer the kind of mystique which astronauts develop by striding across the moon. This week, Bob Murray, the Sunderland chairman credited with building the Stadium of Light, spoke for the game’s new Europhiles when he said: “Given the choice I’d rather finish fourth, fifth or sixth in the Premiership. ” Both routes would take Sunderland into the UEFA Cup, but Murray is evidently serious when he declares: “The FA Cup as a competition has got a problem in terms of finance, attractiveness, viewing and importance. It’s not happening any more… But logistical angst is not the main reason supporters of Arsenal and Liverpool are less frantic than usual to be part of the show. The point is that the FA Cup has been undermined by chairmen and managers dreaming of Europe and by constant fiddling with its timing, structure and status. It was a doomed obsession with the 2006 World Cup bid which persuaded the authorities that Manchester United would be better off clutching the English flag at. Meanwhile the world’s oldest knock-out competition (born 1872) was being shunted around to accommodate Premiership fixtures and the burgeoning Champions League campaigns.

As if the comic effect needed enhancing, it was illustrated by an artist’s impression of Wembley as envisaged by Sir Norman Foster, complete with bewildering steel arch and (this bit I loved) billboard proclaiming the virtues of a. Actually London is quite an efficient city, miraculously so given the sheer weight of numbers that threatens eventually to crush it, all the more surely unless attractions – such as a national stadium – are put elsewhere… My sums were based on 45,000 travelling by car at an average of three per vehicle and 30 miles per gallon. The final reckoning was that Coventry would conserve 50,000 gallons per match, or, when other footballing events were taken into account, relieve us from £2 million a year in petrol bills, plus all the fumes created, plus the frustration, plus an average of three hours each on the return trip. In other words, there would be enormous benefit for football fans and those obliged to share the roads with them. Coventry may not be Jerusalem, but the acceptance of its admirable scheme to transform a so-called “brownfield” site would at least be a step towards making England a greener and more pleasant land.

England’s cover versions fail to hit right note
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 11, 2001
If England have Seaman, Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Owen and Emile Heskey fit, then they have the spine of a very promising side, one capable of reaching the knock-out stages of the World Cup next summer and, longer-term and more fruitfully, of excelling at the 2004 European Championships and World Cup finals of 2006. For all the importance of these friendlies in auditioning prospects, and few who saw… Only players like Gerrard, Beckham and Scholes possess the gifts to fulfil Eriksson’s midfield game-plan, which involves winning the ball and delivering it quickly as seen so spectacularly in the 5-1 defeat of Germany. “Some of the goals we scored against Germany were examples of how I like football to be played,” said Eriksson. “We win the ball and second touch we play it. Of course, when you have Owen up there it is perfect. The fourth goal when Gerrard got it and played it quickly was perfect. “The biggest teams in Europe, like Real Madrid and Barcelona, are capable of keeping the ball and waiting for the moment but they can also win it and give it quickly.

Everyone keeps asking, ‘Why we don’t have European players?’ You have to remember that on Dec. 9, they will all be involved with their club teams. Because it is a World Cup year, in January and February they will be involved in their club schedules. You have to weigh a couple of things in regard to selection of European-based players. One is that we have a number of players playing first-team football in Europe, and to take them out of their clubs for three or four weeks could jeopardize their standing with the clubs. So, I have to weigh if it is better for them to play two or three, four, five games in the Gold Cup, and then jeopardize the months of February, March, April and May in terms of their everyday activity and games with their club teams. All things being equal, if I feel that it will jeopardize their position with their club teams, I’m not going to bring them in… Because it is a World Cup year, in January and February they will be involved in their club schedules.
