England seeding snub denied
BBC News – Oct 11, 2001
Several newspapers had claimed that England were set to be placed outside the top 10. This could have forced them to face the likes of Italy and Spain in the qualifying rounds. But a Uefa official told BBC Sport that the seedings had not been completed. He added that they would not be announced until after all the forthcoming World Cup play-offs had been played… “First of all, the figure of 18 is wrong, it won’t be that low, and secondly the FA’s view is ‘who cares because we’re good enough to win anyway’. “I have spoken to David Davies of the FA about it and his view is ‘to be honest with you, we’re not that bothered about seedings’. ”

But one side who will be given a low seeding for the qualifying competition are Holland. Uefa has announced that the seedings will be based on qualifying performances for Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup. As the Dutch were joint hosts of Euro 2000 with Belgium they did not have to qualify for the competition.

Scottish: No loss of status for Scotland

In fact the Austrians remain 21st in the list, and will be in the third band of seeds when the draw is made in Oporto on Jan 25. The Tel Aviv fixture had been postponed to Saturday night because of security concerns, and the Austrians travelled without 14 players, many of whom had chosen not to make the journey because of fears of terrorist attack.

New Scots manager will get £2m deal
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 19, 2001
The new manager will not have to live in Scotland, although he must spend a significant amount of time here and he will not have to be Scottish but he must have a good command of English, said Taylor, in what amounted to the first strong hints that the SFA is preparing to break with 47 years of tradition and appoint a non-Scot. Sir Alex Ferguson yesterday compared Scotland’s position to that of England prior to the arrival of Eriksson. I’ll probably speak to them next week… “It is understood that the Scottish outlay of £2 million would be dependent on bonuses, implying that the successful candidate would have to steer the Scots to Euro 2004 and the World Cup finals in Germany two years later. “I don’t think money will be an issue because there are other factors to be considered,” said Taylor. “It could be that it would suit an international manager for whom Scotland would represent a step up in the game or it might be appropriate for, say, a manager in his 50s who is looking to move away from the day-to-day demands of club football. “We don’t have a competitive match until Sept 2002 and we want to have the new manager appointed by January, in time for the draw for Euro 2004. “Apart from bona fide applications, the SFA has received around a hundred letters from hopeless hopefuls, including an Old Etonian who “would do the job for £150,000”, several computer soccer champions and Stephen from Southampton – “former manager of Dead Man’s Pants in the Daily Telegraph Fantasy League”.

Pointing upwards: Mick McCarthy will be hoping his Ireland team can…
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 9, 2001
His contract ends next February and he would like to stay on for Euro 2004 before trying his luck in the Premiership. “Opinion of me will be so different in a week’s time if we don’t qualify,” said McCarthy, who has not lost a competitive game at Lansdowne Road during his 5. It will surprise those who have admired the way McCarthy has rebuilt the team, after inheriting an ageing side from Jack Charlton, that praise has been slow and almost grudging from some sections of the Irish media… His contract ends next February and he would like to stay on for Euro 2004 before trying his luck in the Premiership. “Opinion of me will be so different in a week’s time if we don’t qualify,” said McCarthy, who has not lost a competitive game at Lansdowne Road during his 5. Scottish Football: Now Strachan wants Scots job

“If the opportunity arose, I’d be very interested but the timing would have to be right,” admitted Strachan, who, at 44, feels that the ideal candidate should be “older and wiser”. The SFA have revealed that they have received six serious applications for a post which they hope to fill before the mid-January draw for the qualifying rounds of Euro 2004. McCarthy ready to commit to Ireland

That is still the case. I do miss the day-to-day involvement of club management but I have also come to love the demands of this job and the way it differs from any other challenge in football. “McCarthy will not discuss his future, until after the campaign to qualify for the World Cup is completed. Having failed in their last three play-offs, two under McCarthy, the pressure is likely to be on the manager and his side. McCarthy said: ” “My future – and my desire to continue to manage Ireland – will be high on everyone’s agenda if we beat whatever Asian team we face in the play-offs next month. “Ireland will almost certainly face either Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates, for a spot in Korea and Japan. Ireland have been told they will be a top seed for Euro 2004 qualification, and are expected to break back into the top twenty of FIFA’s world rankings, when they are announced on Wednesday… McCarthy said: ” “My future – and my desire to continue to manage Ireland – will be high on everyone’s agenda if we beat whatever Asian team we face in the play-offs next month. “Ireland will almost certainly face either Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates, for a spot in Korea and Japan. McIlroy’s men set to face Poles
Telegraph.co.uk – Oct 31, 2001
UEFA have been informed the Poles are setting up a winter training camp in Cyprus as part of their build-up for the South Korea-Japan World Cup finals next summer. Some months ago the Poles approached the Irish FA who accepted but have been awaiting date confirmation. Sammy McIlroy, the Northern Ireland manager, is anxious to book as many fixtures as possible before the Euro 2004 qualifiers commence in September. McIlroy said: “There is a gap between… “McIlroy intends using under-21 players and those on the periphery of senior recognition for the Nov 13 game with Macclesfield Town – a fixture agreement made when the Cheshire club released him to take up the Northern Ireland post two years ago. No established players will be brought in with the exception of James Quinn, the West Bromwich striker, and West Ham midfielder Steven Lomas the West Ham midfielder now recovering from a major knee operation. Captain Lomas will accept an offer from McIlroy if he maintains progress although he does not intend taking risks. He said: “I got through a reserve match with no adverse effect which is satisfactory considering I have been out since January. “I need games and this one at Macclesfield could be a benefit for me but everything will depend on medical advice. “Cliftonville have made an inquiry for Newry Town midfielder, Gerard Little, who has been made available in a cost cutting exercise. Ards are interested in Gary Sliney, who is also on the market.
