Caf extends deadline
BBC News – Dec 24, 2001
In a move that will engulf Caf and its Cameroonian president Issa Hayatou in controversy, countries now have until 31 March to submit their bids. The continental body justified their decision by saying that it was meant to give Algeria, Egypt, Gabon and South Africa a chance to complete their files. These four countries submitted their bids well before the expiry of last November’s original deadline. Speculation

Caf said the 2006 hosts will now be chosen in September next year and not during the Nations Cup finals in Mali… Despite Caf’s insistence that the move is meant to benefit the four nations whose bids they have already received, speculation is rife that the decision is tailored to suit one specific
country – Morocco. The Moroccans, despite long declared intentions to stage the 2006 finals, curiously failed to meet the November deadline. Blundered

The Moroccan Football Federation then found itself under intense pressure from fans and the media after it was revealed that they had missed the boat!

Given Fifa’s announcement that its new World Cup rotation system will begin with Africa in 2010, the Moroccan media argued that their federation had blundered by not submitting a bid for 2006. Their two main rivals for the 2010 World Cup finals, Egypt and South Africa, have made it clear that they intend to use the 2006 finals to market their World Cup credentials.

Government delays decision on Wembley
CNN – Dec 19, 2001
“It remains a possible outcome that no national stadium will be developed. Jowell also said an alternative proposal to build a national stadium in Birmingham could still be approved if the Wembley proposal could “not be delivered withina reasonable timescale. However, English Football Association chief executive Adam Crozier told a press conference that Wembley remained its “preferred option” and said the F. wanted to make the project “final and unconditional” by the end of April 2002. The five-year-old project to re-develop the north London site of the historic venue has been hindered by escalating expenses and disagreements over the role and necessity of a national stadium, The last game played at the old Wembley stadium, built in 1923, was England’s World Cup qualifier against Germany in October 2000. Demolition work was due to start shortly afterwards but doubts ever since over funding mean the stadium’s famous white twin towers are still standing… , refused to meet the gap in funding and appointed businessman Patrick Carter to review the project. Plans for a new Norman Foster-designed stadium at Wembley were originally conceived with England’s bid to host the 2006 World Cup and London’s hosting of the 2005 World Athletics Championship in mind. But in November 1999 sports minister Kate Hoey said the lack of a permanent running track made the proposed venue unsuitable for a future Olympic bid. Culture secretary Chris Smith then decided Wembley should be designed specifically for football and rugby while developing plans for a separate athletics stadium at Pickett’s Lock in northeast London. That project was scrapped in October, with London subsequently losing the right to host the 2005 World Championships. Last month a parliamentary committee described the government’s handling of the project as “scandalously inept”.

There were a lot of plusses to come out of the World Cup, it was rewarding to see the likes of Nicky Butt, Danny Mills, Trevor Sinclair and of course, Rio Ferdinand rising to the occasion and giving the nation genuine hope that we can continue to move forward on the international stage. We have plenty of reasons to be positive and look forward to Portugal in 2004 and Germany in 2006 with great optimism. Our membership is now more cosmopolitan than any other country in the world and the Premier League and Football League provided more players for World Cup final squads than any other country, reflecting the diversity and successful integration of so many different nationalities in our game. I would also like to take this opportunity to pay sincere tribute to all those of our former members who have passed away in the last year or so and would wish to acknowledge their contribution to our game and extend our sympathies and condolences to all the families of the following:- Jeff Astle (13.

Bayern boosted by Ballack
BBC News – Dec 26, 2001
Bayern Munich is in every regard the top club in Europe. “I had two more lucrative offers from abroad,” Ballack said, calling his decision “a move for Germany”. He said Germany coach Rudi Voeller and Bayern Munich manager Karl-Heinz Rummenigge advised him to stay in Germany until after the 2006 World Cup.

Lack of money still a threat to new Wembley proposal
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 19, 2001
None of these dreams are realisable, though, and yesterday’s announcement suggests that even now the money may never be found to even rebuild the stadium. The Football Association and Government statements on Wembley show that after more than six long years the basic problem that has dogged the project from the beginning has not been solved: it is not clear if the money is there. The FA, who own Wembley, say they have a number of “offers in principle” from various partners and while they are confident “nothing can be taken for granted and certainty of outcome is, of course, not guaranteed”. The saga started in October 1995… None of these dreams are realisable, though, and yesterday’s announcement suggests that even now the money may never be found to even rebuild the stadium. The then Sports Council, now Sport England, called a press conference to announce which of the five bidders from Wembley, Manchester, Birmingham, Bradford and Sheffield had won the race to house the national stadium. Instead of producing a winner they came up with a shortlist of Wembley and Manchester.

Syntax Brillian’s biggest competitor in the near term is Vizio which targets the same consumers, those that prefer spending less on a LCD flat panel television then what the name brand charges but still getting a good quality product. In the long term, when prices of established Tier 1 brand televisions such as Sony (NYSE:SNE), Sharp (SCHAY) and Samsung come down it will prove to be a challenge to lower end Tier 2 brands like Olevia and Vizio, but in the near term Olevia and Vizio are each other’s biggest competitors.
