Caf approves World Cup plans
BBC News – Jan 17, 2002
The Confederation of African Football has given the go-ahead to plans to radically change the way Africa’s representatives at the World Cup are selected. At the Caf Congress in Bamako delegates have decided that from 2006, every Nations Cup tournament that occurs in a World Cup year will be used to choose Africa’s five representatives. The four semi-finalists, plus one other team, will qualify. The change has been introduced because of congestion to the fixture list. Soccer tussle for players’ body, soul
Dispatch Online – Jan 14, 2002
But after being firm, consistent and strong during a lot of negotiations, we’re happy to be taking our best possible team. ”

European clubs, who pay their top African players huge salaries, have become increasingly reluctant to release them for national duty which often includes qualifying matches for the World Cup and Cup of Nations in the same year. In order to address the problem, CAF has decided to use the 2006 Cup of Nations finals as qualifiers for that year’s World Cup. Meanwhile, some players are also revolting over pay. Nigeria, beaten finalists at the 2000 Cup, had their preparations marred by players refusing to travel to Egypt for a friendly match on January 9, in protest against unpaid bonuses for qualifying for the World Cup in Japan and Korea. The players are claiming R800000 in unpaid bonuses donated by individuals, corporate bodies and regional governments. Senegal, who have been drawn in Group D alongside fellow World Cup qualifiers Tunisia and four-times winners Egypt and Zambia, have also had to deal with player unrest during their build-up.

The history man
The Observer – Jan 13, 2002
We’ll be announcing in the next couple of weeks a whole raft of new national coaches – all terrific people – who will run all the development teams. Then there are the academies and the centres of excellence. We’ve approved the National Football Centre where all our coaching and player development will take place. We all know France have built their success around theirs [at Clairefontaine]. And we have more than £60 million a year going into grassroots football [via the Football Foundation]. People say, ‘It must be great now you’ve changed’. And I always say, ‘Hey, we’ve only started… We still have so far to go. ‘ OS: A year ago, things looked bleak. England were bottom of their World Cup qualifying group below Albania and Sven-Göran Eriksson was still serving notice with Lazio. Surely there were times when you didn’t think England would be at the World Cup. If you go back to after the Finland game [a 0-0 draw in October 2000], that was probably a watershed. I doubt most people thought we’d qualify.

Scots may lose chance to bid for Euro 2008
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 15, 2002
Euro 2008 spokesman Simon Lyons warned that a similar opportunity might not arise for decades. That would make the European Championship even more highly coveted and Lyons predicted that Italy, Spain and England – the home of the three major European leagues – would fight off smaller rivals for the future tournaments. Scotland’s 2008 rivals are already known – and none is a major force in European football. The other bidders are Hungary, a four-nation Scandinavian alliance, and joint ventures between Austria and Switzerland, Turkey and Greece, and Bosnia and Croatia. Scotland have considered a link-up with the Republic of Ireland to promote a joint bid but Lyons added: “A solo bid has a much stronger chance.

Meftah was 21-years-old when he came on as a late substitute when Algeria beat Nigeria in the 1990 final in Algiers. Other veterans in the current squad include Billel Dziri and perennial goal scorer Abdelhafid Tasfaout, who will again lead Algeria’s attack. The north Africans, whose country has been beset by internal conflict, have toppled from the elevated status they enjoyed in African football in the 1980s. Then, they qualified for successive World Cup finals in 1982 and 1986 and struck a blow for African soccer by beating the formidable West Germans 2-1 in Spain in 1982. Madjer himself scored their opener in that famous match in Gijon. In the Nations Cup, Algeria were semifinalists three times in the 1980s before finally winning the trophy in front of fanatical home crowds in 1990. But those halcyon days have long passed and Madjer has the difficult task of seeking to restore lost national pride.

RAI to run dedicated World Cup channel
sportbusiness.com – Jan 14, 2002
The broadcaster also stated that, following its costly purchase of the World Cup rights, it would not be able to bid for the rights to Italy’s domestic football league, Serie A. After months of negotiations, RAI became the last of the major European countries to sign a rights deal for the World Cup, reaching a $138million (EUR154m) agreement for exclusive coverage of the 2002 World Cup and its choice of 25 games from the 2006 tournament.

Scoglio confirmed as Libya coach
BBC News – Jan 14, 2002
And there are high expectations of Scoglio within his new country. Should Scoglio achieve this, Libya will be on the way to becoming a major power in African football.

However few people in the west African state believe that the Black Stars will be crowned African champions again, an honour they last achieved in 1982 after earlier successes in 1963, 1965 and 1978. This will be Ghana’s 14th appearance in the finals and coaching the side is a man who was responsible for one of those old triumphs of the past: Fred Osam-Duodu, coach when Ghana won the championship in 1978. This time he has decided to go for youth rather than experience to kick-start Ghana’s preparation for the 2006 World Cup preparation but he has been widely criticised by the local press. The veteran coach has also been hit by a number of injuries to key foreign-based players. Ghana’s most prolific strikers, Charles Amoah of Austrian side Sturm Graz and Peter Ofori-Quaye of Olympiakos, will be sidelined as will AC Parma midfielder Stephen Appiah. Appiah, who was key to Osam-Duodu’s plans, has been battling with a nagging thigh injury while Amoah, who scored three goals in the qualifiers, was ruled out by a toe injury. There was also no place for the domestic league’s most valuable player Charles Taylor of Hearts of Oak in the 22-man squad that has only four players with previous Nations Cup experience.

But no matter what happens, the Eagles will play in the final round. But something tells me the Eagles will win in Mali. I mean we shall be the next winners of the Cup of Nations. And we shall go on to win it for three more times. In 2002, 2004, & 2006. I have little doubt in my mind about this prediction though I wish I had crosschecked this prophecy from T.

Tight hamstrings can cause poor posture and not allow you to bend over completely. Knee pain, torn cartilage in your knees, and wearing of cartilage behind your knee cap are also caused from tight hamstrings. Sure, the head coach of a team is important, but since Pederson is basically Andy Reid Lite, it is important to note that Reid was only good while Jim Johnson was his defensive coordinator. Once Johnson died, so did Reid’s ability to win games in Philly. It’s no coincidence the Eagles haven’t won a playoff game since Johnson died. With that in mind, I think the most important hire that the Eagles will make this offseason is who will run their defense.
