Current crop all set to mature for Euro 2004
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 26, 2002
But I have never felt more upbeat about England’s chances of success, and that includes my years as a player. Nothing I have seen so far this season has dissuaded me from the view that England are on the verge of something marvellous. As I have said before, I do not expect England to triumph in Japan and Korea, but I do expect them to give a good account of themselves. No country in Europe has ever won the World Cup outside the continent and, while that record is there to be broken, I don’t believe England have sufficient experience to manage that this summer. But two summers from now and in a European environment? Don’t look further than England for your winners.

Eriksson aiming to take every advantage
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 26, 2002
I don’t know yet how many I will take to Dubai, but the ideal should be 23. Then you have all the reserves in the Under-21 squad. I may change my ideas. “Where that leaves members of the senior squad who fail to make the cut is not clear. One should have thought they would be better replacements than Under-21 players with limited experience of senior international football. But if Eriksson does go ahead with his novel plan, youngsters like.

Weir letter puts Vogts on defensive
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 10, 2002
Weir, who wrote to the Scottish Football Association to say that he no longer wanted to be considered for selection, confirmed his decision when he spoke to Vogts on Monday. However, the Scotland manager batted aside all questions about the player’s motivation with the prearranged response that anyone who wanted to know why the Everton defender did what he did should ask the man himself. Weir’s letter did not attempt to fix responsibility for his departure on the manager, who was quoted by a German news agency as saying that the Everton player and his central defensive colleague, Christian Dailly, had let him down… The manager demonstrated that he is not afraid of aversion therapy when he revealed that he has watched the Scots’ performance in the Faroes “five or six times”. The Tartan Army perversely may be gratified to discover that reopening the wound is no more fun for the manager than it has been for them. Euro 2004 kicks off in Portugal
Pravda – Jan 28, 2002
Gone is 130,000 capacity Stadium of Light but Eusebio remains, a symbol of the potential of Portuguese football, which stubbornly insists on not producing the goods at the last moment. This time, Portugal is quietly confident that if the team does not win the coming World Cup, then the European Championship will be theirs two years hence. Regarding the groups, France should win group 1, with Slovenia, Israel, Cyprus and Malta. Romania and Denmark will dispute group 2 against Norway, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Luxembourg. Group 3 will be hotly disputed by the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Austria, with Byelorussia and Moldavia.

Hosts set for Euro 2004
BBC News – Jan 25, 2002
‘We love football’

Nonetheless, though hardly one of the sport’s superpowers, Portugal can lay claim to a rich footballing history and in Benfica, Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto boasts three clubs with Europe-wide reputations. The Portuguese bid’s official motto was simple but clearly effective: ‘We love football’. The Portuguese nation’s love of the game is not surprising given the calibre of player the country produces and their hosting of Euro 2004 is due recognition of the worldwide impact of players such as Luis Figo and Rui Costa. The tournament is to be held in eight cities, from Braga and Guimaraes in the north to the Algarve in the south, with five of the 10 stadiums being revamped in time for Europe’s premier football event. It was Portugal’s detailed plans for the development of its stadiums which eventually won over the Uefa executive committee, with sports other than just football benefitting. Capital city Lisbon will get a new 54,000 capacity stadium being built at an estimated cost of ?60m.

McCarthy backs Ireland to progress in Euro 2004
rte.ie – Jan 25, 2002
“It’s a tough group as there are no real minnows but it’s one we can qualify from. My players are better players now. They’ve had more experience of international football and learned how to win games,” said the Republic of Ireland manager, whose team were among the top seeds for the draw made in Porto this morning. McCarthy admitted that the draw had been more kind than in previous tournaments… We have confidence that we can go to places and beat some of the so-called minnows,” he added. Ireland were drawn against Russia, Switzerland, Georgia and Albania. Switzerland will not be pleased to be drawn in the same qualifying group as Russia, having lost out to them in the World Cup 2002 qualifiers. Russia topped that group, ahead of strong challenges from Slovenia and Yugoslavia. Of the other challengers, Albania can be seen as the real weak link, having finished bottom in England’s group. Georgia were third in their World Cup group, but came in a full ten points behind winners Italy. Elsewhere, the draw gave Northern Ireland manager Sammy McIlroy the chance to repeat his 1982 World Cup heroics against Spain when the underdogs beat the host nation.

Leeds pair put Eriksson in dilemma
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 24, 2002
Managers often say their hardest decision is telling a player who is in good form that he is not in the team. That dilemma is easy to the one Eriksson and FA chief executive Adam Crozier are currently wrestling with… But he would be under no such restriction for the other warm-up games, which were confirmed yesterday. England will take on Paraguay at Anfield on April 17 to prepare for their World Cup meeting with Argentina.

Also on the agenda was John Gregory’s departure from Aston Villa, Tottenham’s Worthington Cup semi-final win over Chelsea and the home countries Euro 2004 qualification hopes. In addition, West Brom legend Jeff Astle, who passed away during the week, is remembered. Watch the broadcast… I think Jamie is quite right in a couple of the points he’s made. I’m surprised John Gregory lasted that long, although I thought he did a good job. I stand by the fact that Aston Villa are not a big club any more, and that to finish seventh or eighth in the League is actually a good performance from them. Another important point is the players they’ve had to sell. Bosnich left, as did Ehiogu, Southgate and Yorke. Those players had to be replaced, and when that was don there was no more money left to improve the team. That’s why I think Gregory did a good job.

Two roles too far
BBC News – Jan 25, 2002
But – as was the case when the then Aberdeen boss, Alex Ferguson, took charge of Scotland for the 1986 World Cup finals after the death of Jock Stein – it has usually been a temporary measure. Meantime, the Dutch FA insists that the 54-year-old is the man to go further than the full-time Louis van Gaal and provide the new dawn sought by a nation thirsting to drink once more at the top table of world football. In a country where the pool of talent has been far fuller than the trophy cabinet, fans expect Advocaat to achieve more than the quarter-final spot reached under his guidance at the World Cup finals in 1994. Rangers claim that the addition to his vast CV can only benefit the Scottish Premier League club’s desire to end years of under-achievement in the Champions League. But, unless Advocaat’s director of football role was never as demanding or as important as Rangers made out when he stepped upstairs in December, it is hard to see how the Glasgow club will not not lose out.

England’s draw has note of unreality
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 25, 2002
It was explained that this was not a less-than-politically-correct joke. While it is the same tune, the locals claimed it came from an old Bavarian folk song. Bertie Vogts will be another facing potential confusion when the bands strike up for Scotland’s Group Five meetings with Germany.

For the Better
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 25, 2002
55, Stromness looks the best bet of the day. Ladbrokes offer 1-3 about England to win their group, while Scotland are available at 7-4 and Wales at 12-1 to reach the finals. Liverpool are 11-4 to cause an upset in tomorrow’s lunchtime FA Cup tie at Highbury. In the other televised ties, Ipswich will have their supporters at 10-11 with Ladbrokes to beat Manchester City while Peterborough are 13-2 to cause an upset against Newcastle. Bristol Rovers, who visit Gillingham, and Walsall, 7-1 to win at Charlton, are the value for bigger upsets.

Bertie Bowl scores a winner with host plan
Irish Independent – Jan 24, 2002
That is the date the six potential hosts must confirm to UEFA their intention to formally bid for Euro 2008. While the two associations will be fronting the joint bid, nothing will be possible without Government support. If a commitment to build Stadium Ireland and revamp Lansdowne Road is not in place within the next four weeks, the deal is dead. That would leave the Government carrying the blame for throwing away the opportunity to stage the third biggest sporting event in the world after the World Cup Finals and the Olympics. They are unlikely to let that happen, especially within months of a general election. Last night the General Secretary of the FAI, Mr Brendan Menton, confirmed that the Government is fully behind the bid. “The Government are an integral part of the bid,” he confirmed… Because of the time frame involved, the possibility of Croke Park becoming an alternative to Stadium Ireland is not a runner, even if the Clare motion calling on the doors to be opened to other sports is passed at the GAA’s Congress. In addition, the finals of Euro 2008 are scheduled for June, which is at the height of the GAA’s championship season when the use of Croke Park is at its optimum. Officials from the FAI and the Scottish FA will hold discussions in Portugal this evening, where the 50-member associations of UEFA are gathering for tomorrow’s draw for the qualifying round of Euro 2004. The lobbying process will also commence today. The FAI holds a major ace in its honorary secretary Des Casey, who is also a vice-president of UEFA and one of the most highly respected legislators within the sport. As he is retiring from both posts this summer, he may be handed a key role in the joint bid committee. After confirming their intention to bid for Euro 2008, the two countries have until the end of May to submit all bid documents.

com Magazine: Do you intend to stay at Dynamo, where you have played since 1995?Holovko: I am a Dynamo player, and my plans are connected to the club. I can dream about anything, of course, but this will not be reflected on the training process and the games. I know that abroad players get paid more and work less. You know the thought that bugs any player in Ukraine is that you can be paid much more in any other country for what you do. Theoretically, I could even go to Turkey and Israel. But Dynamo has a name, and we play real football here… We lost an excellent chance to go to the 1998 World Cup and EURO 2000™. Then we lost to the Germans in the 2002 World Cup play-offs. Now all my dreams are about EURO 2004™. com Magazine: Dynamo is a very strict team in terms of players’ free time. How do you cope with that?Holovko: When one signs a contract with Dynamo, he knows what it is going to be like. Of course, our wives in Dynamo are pretty much like sailors’ wives, as they wait for us at home.

Hughes hopeful after tough draw
BBC News – Jan 25, 2002
There will be a lot of interest in football after the World Cup and to go straight into a major championship will be great for the players. “I will be looking for some good performances from them. ”

Hughes’ former international striking partner, Ian Rush said it was not a mission impossible for Wales. “When you look at it, with the seedings and everything, I don’t think Wales
get any luck in these draws,” he said. “But you have to look at it positively. “Italy are favourites to win the group, but Wales on their day are capable of
