Ask Abdul Razak
BBC News – Feb 2, 2002
Semeter Mohammed, Ethiopia

Dear Mr Abdul Razak, why do you think the East African countries, which founded the African Cup of Nations, are lagging behind those in North, West and Southern Africa? Do we have a hope to see one team from East Africa in the African Nations Cup or World Cup in the near future? Do you think that Caf should introduce a quota system for the regions?

No. I am not in support of a quota system for the region because everybody is fighting to be number one. I played against Uganda in Accra to win the 1978 Nations Cup and they were a good team. There were also Tanazania (1980) and Malawi (1984). However, the football in that region really needs to wake up. Online, Nigeria

What do you think is really happening to the Ghanaian National Team? They have lost all the respect they used to have in Africa… Do you agree and why?

Well many people still think that Ghana are not the favourites. But this is football. I can remember Argentina in the 1990 World Cup. They didn’t play the best football but went on to play in the final. Awal Paapa,
Ghana

Mr Razak, With the current problems in the Ghana national team would you agree to handle the team if given the chance, and what is your advice to the GFA? Also what is your dream club you would wish to handle in Ghana, your motherland?

I was there previously I guess you are aware that I was assistant to Giusseppe Dossena in 2000. But of course if the chance come again I will welcome it with the material support necessary to succeed. As for the dream club, it’s Kotoko, it’s a club with a rich history, the backbone of my career.

Blatter’s vote for change
BBC News – Feb 4, 2002
When World Cup places are not at stake, there is the fight to qualify for the European Championships. The same is not true in South America. With just 10 footballing nations, two countries from outside are usually invited to make up the numbers for the continent’s regional tournament, the Copa America. The solution then, is obvious – start South America’s World Cup preliminaries earlier, the dates coinciding with those of the European Championship qualifiers. Since the giant clubs will be releasing their local players for the European games, no extra inconvenience is caused by letting their South Americans go… Since the giant clubs will be releasing their local players for the European games, no extra inconvenience is caused by letting their South Americans go. International calendar

If ratified, the move would put South America on a permanent World Cup footing. The qualifiers for 2006 would start next year, for example. Under such a system it would be extremely difficult to continue with the current
practice of staging the Copa America every two years. To fit in with the international calendar it would have to be held at four year intervals. Indeed, it seems that the next Copa, to be hosted by Peru, will be pushed back a year to 2004. But for the South Americans – and in particular the smaller nations – reducing the frequency of the Copa America is a price well worth paying.

Piala Dunia 2002: Korea-Japan – News
Utusan Malaysia Online – Feb 7, 2002
“”I brought with me the European school, in this case the French school, although my exotic side from 10 years spent in Africa shouldn’t be forgotten,” he said. “The standards I wanted to introduce in Japan are European standards. “Troussier said it was important for football in Japan “not to lose the momentum created by the World Cup. “The targets for the 2006 World Cup have to be set. I hope the Japanese football chiefs use the foundations laid over these last four years,” of Troussier’s tenure, he said.

“I only took over because there was no coach,” he added. Well nurtured

Ghana’s last Nations Cup title was in 1982 – when Osam-Duodu
was also in charge – but they have not reached the semi-finals
since 1996. That is precisely what they must do, however, if they are to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, something no Ghana team has managed before. But Ghana Football Association president Ben Koufie believes that the tournament has helped blood the players who will take Ghana to the peak of world football. “This is definitely our team, we used 2002 as our platform,” revealed Koufie. “A lot of these boys have proved that they are ready, that they are good material. ”

Lazio deny Eriksson offer
BBC News – Feb 2, 2002
Eriksson led Lazio to the Serie A title in 1999-2000 but left last January to take the England job. The Swede signed a contract with the Football Association until 2006 and achieved instant hero status by guiding England to the World Cup finals. Lazio’s fortunes have dipped since his departure and they currently lie seventh in Serie A, 15 points behind leaders and city rivals Roma. Reports suggested Cragnotti’s plan was to replace current coach Alberto Zaccheroni, with Roberto Mancini operating under the guidance of Eriksson. Cragnotti was said to have given Eriksson an open invitation to return to Rome as director of football as soon as his involvement with England came to an end.

Bettman: NHL not in conflict with Super Bowl
USA Today – Feb 2, 2002

The NBA and major league baseball follow the 2-3-2 format

EURO2008 Still On
Scottish Fitba – Feb 7, 2002
Here are their answers. ScottishFitba: The Irish themselves have said 2008 is too early and they are just using it for experience !!!!. Scottish Executive: The Irish authorities – Government and FA – have said that they will never be able to bid for such a tournament on their own, that working with Scotland gives an ideal opportunity to build upon the undoubted strengths of both countries (friendly and knowledgeable fans, desirable destinations etc), that they can deliver two stadiums to meet UEFA’s requirements (30,000 seaters for pool stage, 40,000 for quarter or semis) well in advance of 2008 and that, due to FIFA’s decision to rotate World Cup around the continents, this represents probably the last realistic chance to put forward a bid which won’t compete with the ‘bigger’ European football nations. SF: If the Irish can’t come up with their side and back out, would the money still be there to support the SFA if they got backing from other sources (i. City investors, Private investors etc) to cover any shortfall between the Exec funding ?SE: Our decision not to support a solo bid was not just based on cost. We are committed to supporting the joint bid proposals and if these can not be taken forward – and we have no reason to believe they will not – there will be no scope for other options… Here are their answers.
