Irish stalemate sees Euro 2008 hope fade
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 27, 2002
With no guarantee that the GAA would relax the rule and, even then, provide the stadium for part of summer 2008, a bid appeared increasingly impossible. Byrne said: “Without a new stadium the bid would be in the hands of the GAA. The GAA is not going to sign off Croke Park for a large chunk of the summer season to soccer. She (Harney) cannot guarantee Croke Park can be used because it does not belong to her. “Today’s deadline does not require the naming of specific stadiums, just an intention that the full eight would be available between the two nations. But Byrne said: “We cannot just say ‘Lansdowne Road and one more’. I think it is appalling… Byrne said: “Without a new stadium the bid would be in the hands of the GAA. SOCCER: Dalglish backs Euro 2008 bid
U.TV – Feb 12, 2002
Scotland and Ireland have six rivals to stage Euro 2008, with the main opposition expected to come from the joint Austria-Switzerland bid and a four-country proposal from the Nordic nations. Dalglish passionately spearheaded today`s build-up to the final stages of the campaign at a London restaurant but he will not be allowed to attend the countdown in Geneva. UEFA have banned competing countries from lining up a glittering array of supporters after supermodel Claudia Schiffer appeared in the German delegation last time. But bid director John Henderson said: “That`s fine with us. We are happy with the strength of our bid and are happy for it to be judged on its own merit… He believes it would generate the finance for Scottish clubs to afford to start up their own academies and produce young players instead of relying on the current flood of foreign imports. “The Scottish system has good quality young players at 15 or 16, but after that there isn`t that much development. Why not is the 64,000 dollar question. “Everybody knows Scottish football isn`t going through too good a phase but it would be a great incentive for everyone to get together and do something about it. “It would also give the kids a great lift, something to look forward to. It would be a light at the end of the tunnel,“ he said. The former Celtic and Liverpool star added: “I think there is no doubt Euro 96 helped England.

No real sign of removing invisible ban on playing the ‘garrison…
Irish Independent – Mar 1, 2002
The notion that the Government should advocate the ‘garrison game’ taking place on the hallowed turf of Croke Park is probably enough to spur some delegates at April’s congress to demand the instant return of the ‘Ban’! However, they can relax as international soccer at ‘Croker’ is not likely to happen, even if the GAA decide to open its gates to other ‘codes’ and charge for the privilege. For starters, the FAI won’t sell-out their staunch allies in the IRFU, who have no intention of moving from Dublin 4 to Dublin 3. The bond between these two bodies goes back longer than the thirty years which the Irish senior team have played at Lansdowne Road. When the FAI jettisoned Eircom Park a year ago, they agreed a deal with the IRFU to become joint tenants at Stadium Ireland, an arrangement which would allow Lansdowne Road to be modernised. For the FAI, it’s a case of where the IRFU go, they go, whether that’s Stadium Ireland, Lansdowne Road or Newlands Cross where the IRFU have extensive lands… When the FAI jettisoned Eircom Park a year ago, they agreed a deal with the IRFU to become joint tenants at Stadium Ireland, an arrangement which would allow Lansdowne Road to be modernised. For the FAI, it’s a case of where the IRFU go, they go, whether that’s Stadium Ireland, Lansdowne Road or Newlands Cross where the IRFU have extensive lands. The notion of Croker being a venue for Euro 2008 is a curve ball in name as FAI general secretary Brendan Menton believes it would be “completely unrealistic” to expect the GAA to close down Croke Park from mid-May until the first weekend of July. Expect many of the delegates at the GAA congress to share that view. Even if the lights to Jones’ Road went green for go, there would be massive difficulties accommodating the Republic of Ireland senior team at Croke Park. Competitive games now take place in March, April while FIFA and UEFA allow for many ‘double-headers’ in June, September and October. How would the FAI fit games in? September is completely ruled out because of the All-Ireland hurling, camogie and football finals – and that is not including replays – while the GAA would not take very kindly to two games in Croker in early June.

Euro bidders show team spirit
BBC News – Feb 5, 2002
The main opposition party, Fine Gael, has opposed the plans, raising fears that if the government is not re-elected the scheme will be cancelled. Lansdowne Road

But Dr McDaid said: “As long as Bertie Ahern is Taoiseach here the dream of having this stadium here in this country will be a reality. ”

The minister said that even if the government was not returned at the election Dublin’s Croke Park could be developed as the stadium to accompany Lansdowne Road – itself in need of a facelift. The use of Croke Park depends on the Gaelic Athletic Association lifting a ban on the use of the stadium for other sports – a move which Mr McDaid was “confident” would happen by 2008. Mr Watson said: “We are not yet in a final position but I am very confident that we will have a bid that will go forward at the end of this month, and be finalised in May, that will be a real possibility of being a winner. ”

Mr Watson rejected a suggestion that Northern Ireland should be allowed to join as a third partner. He said: “If you introduce a third country with other considerations that would weaken the bid.

Confidence grows for Euro 2008 bid
Irish Independent – Feb 6, 2002
Mike Watson said he was “very much reassured” that Ireland would have two stadiums ready by 2008. Following talks in Dublin with the Minister for Sport, Jim McDaid, Mr Watson said he was confident a winning bid would go forward at the end of this month, and be finalised in May. The bid hinges on Scotland having six stadiums and Ireland providing another two. Dr McDaid pledged yesterday that two stadiums would be ready in time… Dr McDaid pledged yesterday that two stadiums would be ready in time. “As long as Bertie Ahern is Taoiseach, the dream of having this stadium here in this country will be a reality. ” But he added that even if the Abbotstown stadium did not go ahead, Croke Park could be developed as the stadium to accompany Lansdowne Road – itself in need of a facelift. This would depend on the GAA lifting a ban on other sports – a move which Mr McDaid was “confident” would happen by 2008.

Talking Football: Scots and Irish due a reward
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 12, 2002
The Tartan Army and Green Army have proved the life and soul of so many parties around the world that they should be allowed to host a shindig of their own. Warm smiles and sore heads are guaranteed… But many of the accents to be heard in the throng that magical night were more Govan than Gallic; the Tartan Army, who had helped launch the competition so colourfully with that joyous Stade de France opener against Brazil, were determined to see the World Cup through to the end. Many took boats, even a sub, to Argentina in 1978, turning the Tartan Army into the Tartan Navy.

McCague and Co insist that there is no ‘secret deal’
Irish Independent – Mar 1, 2002
“The GAA has committed itself to nothing regarding future use of Croke Park,” he said. The GAA leadership are extremely keen to emphasise that as there was a degree of confusion among ordinary members yesterday. Many believed that the GAA had given a firm commitment to allow Croke Park be used in the formal bid for Euro 2008. The GAA insists that is not the case and that there can be no change in policy without clearance from Congress to change the rules regarding who decides on Croke Park’s future.

Euro bid runs into problems
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 26, 2002
The stadium, to accompany Lansdowne Road, would be vital to the bid, allowing Ireland to provide two match venues along with Scotland’s six. Ireland’s Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation dismissed the latest reports as “speculation”. And a spokesman for Harney said: “The Government is considering the bid at the moment and we are not going to say anything ahead of them. “Both promised that the Government’s decision would be made by tomorrow at the latest.

The Spartans have been particularly successful running the football, averaging an incredible 9.1 yards per rushing play and that success should continue against a Notre Dame defensive front that has surrendered 6.1 yprp to Purdue and Michigan. A lot of that damage was done by the running of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson (258 yards on 28 rushes last week) and the http://www.elitecheapnfljerseysauthentic.com Irish have only allowed an average of 3.5 yards per rush to non quarterbacks this season and Michigan State’s Kirk Cousins is not a running quarterback. Are things so different in the far off alien world of Turkey?I ended up having a C section with my first child, after progressing completely and laboring with her for a long time. The reason was because of her non reassuring fetal heartbeat. It was dropping dangerously low. I was devastated at the time because I had gone through http://www.cheap-nfl-nike-jerseys.com all that pain and work and ended up with the C section. Swelling in two places!! So with my 2nd child I looked at the risk factors, the reasons why or why not another C section would happen, talked to medical professionals, and decided for a VBAC. SUCCESS! Child 3 was also a successful VBAC. I totally understand her feelings about the C Cheap NFL Jerseys section. I felt that way too. I am also glad that I had the ability to have the TOLAC/VBAC with my next two children. I would pick a natural labor over C section any day. With child 2 I was absolutely AMAZED at how fast recovery is with a natural birth as opposed to a C section, which is another thing that people sometimes do not take into consideration either.25. http://www.cheapnfljerseyssu.com Philadelphia Phillies (30 41) The swoon will allow noone to remain unblemished.
