Q&A: The Fifa controversy
BBC News – Feb 28, 2002
Q: The marketing division of Fifa recently collapsed. How could that happen to such a powerful organisation?

A: The allegations of bribery come at a difficult time for Fifa. The collapse of ISMM, which held the marketing rights for the 2002 and 2006 World Cup, and ISL which held the TV rights for the two events for all countries outside Europe is at the least, highly embarassing. Fifa said there is no threat to the TV coverage of the World Cup as it has insurance and guarantees from Swiss Banks. A full investigation of Fifa’s finances was demanded by 13 of the 24 members of the Executive Committee. An extraordinary meeting will take place on 7 March. Such moves do not inspire confidence that Fifa has its house in order.

Are drink breaks a good move?
BBC News – Mar 6, 2002
it’s all geared to advertising which is exactly what this is about. I have been at an ice hockey game where we were actually sitting around waiting for the ads to finish before the game could be re-started!

June is Japan’s rainy season, and it doesn’t half rain so perhaps the players should just stick their mouths to the sky!

The human body needs liquid in extreme conditions – a World Cup match in high heat and humidity certainly fits into that category. Why does everyone presume that players are superhuman – they are not robots… After playing their group game against Italy one of the Ireland players took around three hours to produce a urine sample due to being chronically dehydrated. If, for financial reasons Fifa insist that the games kick off in the afternoon rather than in the evening when it’s cooler, then they have to allow drink breaks. Waiting until Germany 2006 to decide on this simply won’t do; it’s Japan and Korea where the players’ health will be seriously at risk. John Parrott,
England

So long as officials are sensible and allow players time to take water at the natural breaks in the game (throw-ins, etc) there is no need for set drinks breaks. The problem at USA ’94 that prevented a lot of players getting the water they wanted was that Fifa encouraged refs to keep the game going at all costs. This lead to mad rushes to get water every time the ball went out in order to avoid the wrath of over officious referees. Charlie,
UK

I agree that the idea of a drink break sounds more like a media gimmick than a footballing solution.

The Observer – Feb 24, 2002
It is actually pretty hard to do. So why do all these officials feel compelled to relate this sorry anecdote? Is the desperation for one tournament which is 100% trouble free so pressing that eveybody concerned is ready to put off quite a few legitimate fans to achieve it?Ultimately, a trip to Japan will be beyond the means of a lot of supporters. Many may choose to wait for Portugal 2004 or Germany 2006. But quit with the tales of the great coffee robbery. It just ain’t true. Safety firstWith hindsight, competing in the Great Stadium Building Race of the1990s against South Korea was probably not the best use of Japan’s resources. For a while, neither nation seemed capable of passing an undeveloped field without laying down a pitch and erecting a couple of cantilever stands.

Making his mark

That is why he is in camp. No matter who survives the final cut from a list of midfielders who are either on the bubble or are considered longshots in this camp such as Brian Maisonneuve, Eddie Lewis, Brian West, Richard Mulrooney, Richie Williams, Jeff Cunningham and 18-year-old Bobby Convey, Beasley will surely be one of the handful of players the U. National team is built around for the 2006 World Cup. The young man, who has been called ?jitterbug? at times and is dubbed ?DMB? by his vast group of fans within Sam?s Army and on countless internet message boards knows this, but he is only thinking of playing against Portugal, South Korea and Poland now that he?s this close. ?It?s not going to be easy,? said Beasley, ?but hopefully I can make my mark and be one of them to make the final 23.

Politics take centre stage
BBC News – Mar 4, 2002
Although he has categorically denied being involved in some of the murkier allegations that are being made about the buying of African votes. Blatter, however, soured his relations with Asia almost the instant he came into power. His first FIFA Congress in Los Angeles in July 1999 resulted in a walkout by the Asian delegates disgusted that their countries would be playing for only two places alongside the two hosts at the 2002 World Cup. The FIFA President has been reported this week as saying that the continent’s quota for 2006 will depend on how they perform this summer, which is not the kind of overture that will have Asia rushing back to his side. East Asia to Unite In Regional Body

East Asia’s football associations are expected to announce the formation of regional federation under the umbrella of the AFC and in common with those of the South Asian and ASEAN regions. Japan’s JFA have been instrumental in the initiative designed to strengthen the area’s voice in the AFC which has tended to be dominated politically by the Middle Eastern nations. The forming of the new Federation is likely to see the Dynasty Cup, which Japan, China and Korea Republic contested throughout the 1990s, reinstated with some form of qualifying competition to decide which of the lesser football nations is represented.

No real sign of removing invisible ban on playing the ‘garrison…
Irish Independent – Mar 1, 2002
Before you could cry Robbie Burns, the Scots will scarper, cursing the day they agreed on a joint Euro 2008 deal with the Irish however that would be the very least of the FAI’s worries. Crammed between a rock and a hard place, the FAI would be faced with the dire prospect of playing competitive internationals at Lansdowne Road in front of 22,500 fans from 2004 onwards. Already, FIFA have signalled to the FAI that they can no longer instal bucket seats at Lansdowne for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers which begin in the autumn of 2004. The IRFU have plans to down-size Lansdowne Road into a modern 33,000 all-seater stadium but that is based entirely on Stadium Ireland going ahead. Without it, they’ll stay put at the old ground, fill it with 48,000 fans three or four times a year, lick their wounds, and consider their options. As for the FAI, they’ll have open sores with no bandages. For the FAI, so much hinges on Ahern’s success in the General Election and the construction of Stadium Ireland – a successful Euro 2008 bid would be an unexpected bonus.

Logic would tell you that Jacksonville, which can’t sell out any games, should move. Their owner, whose legacy in a lot of ways is tied to professional football in Jacksonville, I think would feel a tremendous sense of failure if he ever moved the team.Never before had employees felt so free to tell their bosses what they thought of them. In the long economic boom, people were not afraid of losing their jobs. Other jobs awaited them; even modestly qualified people moved from one company to another in a quest for the perfect position they believed they richly deserved.Top of pageResultsOxidative stress increases total protein expression of DRP1 but not its S616 phosphorylation in the glaucomatous retinaTo determine whether oxidative stress induced by elevated IOP Wholesale China Jerseys alters the expression levels of DRP1 and its S616 phosphorylation in the glaucomatous retina, D2 Gpnmb and pre glaucomatous D2 mice were fed with coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10, 1 a potent antioxidant,23, 26, 35 or a control diet daily for 5 months and we examined the protein expression levels of superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) and mt transcription factor A (Tfam), as well as DRP1 and DRP1 S616 phosphorylation.
