Hayatou places bid to become FIFA’s first black president
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 16, 2002
The 55-year-old Cameroon football official will stand for election in Seoul on May 29 – the day before the World Cup begins – and football’s governing body is bracing itself for a fraught political battle. Hayatou, the president of the African Football Confederation (CAF), announced his intention after a CAF committee meeting in Cairo. “I will strive for a new FIFA,” he said. “If I become president then my office will be transparent and open. You can look at the books of CAF right now and see all the information you want… Quite what he can offer either Asia or Europe is questionable but one high-ranking European source said he would be the better option “simply because he will let us carry on our business without meddling in our affairs. “The source also insisted that the recent corruption allegations into the way Blatter beat Johansson to the FIFA presidency in Paris four years ago would work against the Swiss this time round and that he would also lose crucial credibility if the current internal investigation into FIFA’s finances uncovered any serious mismanagement. Already, reports have suggested that FIFA’s losses, stemming mainly from the collapse last year of its World Cup marketing agents ISL, are 10 times more than Blatter had previously admitted and it has also been suggested that he used 2006 World Cup revenue to prop up his FIFA’s tottering finances. Even if both turn out to be true, Blatter aides insist he will still beat Hayatou, a slow and calculating sports politician. “Johansson was a strong and formidable candidate last time and even then not all of Europe voted for him,” said one FIFA insider. “So how can anyone expect all of Europe to suddenly vote en bloc for an African?”Blatter’s position has been further cemented by the revelation that the committee probing FIFA’s finances seems likely to reject any alleged wrongdoing by the president himself. “I can’t see anything there at present that could cause him any distress,” said one respected source working with the inquiry team.

Will Fifa vote for a clean-up?
The Observer – Mar 17, 2002
But nothing is as simple as it looks in the politics of world football. Hayatou’s challenge has the backing of the three biggest confederations in world football. Between them his native Africa (52 countries), Europe (51) and Asia (44), which between them represent 147 of the 204 Fifa member nations who will choose the next Fifa leader in Seoul, South Korea, on May 29. Africa is hugely disappointed that Blatter failed in his pledge to ensure the right to stage the 2006 World Cup went to their continent; instead Germany got it – again. And Hayatou, the Cameroonian head of the African Football Confederation, enjoys powerful allies in the shape of his Uefa counterpart Lennart Johansson and Chung Mong-joon, the Korean who was considering running for football’s top job himself but has instead decided to form an anti-Blatter alliance for change… Hayatou’s challenge has the backing of the three biggest confederations in world football. Sports Politics: Blatter admits FIFA `mortgaged’ World Cup
Telegraph.co.uk – Mar 15, 2002
Telegraph Sport revealed that FIFA have in effect “mortgaged” future income from the 2006 World Cup, including five contracts which have not yet been concluded. In a letter to the FIFA executive members, also sent to the national associations and confederations, Blatter says: “It has been necessary to draw on revenue from the 2003-2006 financial period… “In addition, ISL’s failure means FIFA have to provide the computer system for this year’s World Cup in Korea and Japan, as well as internet facilities, and Blatter’s letter admits that the cost will be £80 million, “only part of which will be covered by contracts with our partners”. However, Blatter remains in a buoyant mood, ready to launch a counter-attack against UEFA, whose president, Lennart Johansson, has been attempting to reveal the true state of FIFA’s finances. Blatter has suggested that FIFA statutes could be amended to cut the power of UEFA in world football. They have eight of the 24 members on the FIFA executive with the four British countries allowed to nominate one FIFA vice-president. Blatter may seek to reshape it to his own liking. Blatter’s suggestions have provoked anger in UEFA, whose executive, meeting in Lyons yesterday, promised to act to safeguard Europe’s position in the world body. Today, the focus will shift to Cairo where CAF, the African federation, are holding an executive meeting.

England back Eriksson
BBC News – Mar 17, 2002
“We have got a long-term plan in place and we are already ahead of where everyone expected us to be given the point at which Sven took over,” said Crozier. “Our aim is to win a tournament before the end of 2006 and we have a great young squad that is getting better and better all the time. “England have had so many managers in the past 10 years and what we really need is continuity and consistency. “Sven is one of the best managers in the world and we are absolutely going to stick with him whatever happens.

Schroeder backs Berlin bid
BBC News – Mar 18, 2002
“I would be delighted if Berlin could host the world championships,” Schroeder said after meeting officials from the International Association of Athletics Federations
(IAAF). “The city and its surroundings offer ideal conditions to prepare and host this top international event. ”

Berlin’s main trump card is the city’s Olympic stadium, which is currently undergoing a facelift in order to become the showcase arena for football’s 2006 World Cup finals. The IAAF team still have to inspect the other bidding cities of Brussels, Budapest, Helsinki, Moscow and Rome. The ruling body will name the hosts on 14 April in Nairobi. The bidding process for the 2005 event was reopened after the original hosts London withdrew when the British government shelved a plan to build a new stadium.
