Leader: Scotland/Ireland Euro 2008 bid | The Guardian | Guardian…
Guardian Unlimited – Apr 16, 2002
It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for two small nations to attract an event which neither of them would ever be likely to stage on their own. It’s an opportunity to remind the world (the English in particular) that there is so much more to these islands than England – and not just in terms of football. The championships would bring in some serious revenue to both countries. Don’t forget, either, that it would mean automatic byes for both hosts, sparing them the qualification process that has seen so many football dreams turn to dust in past campaigns.

Ahern hopes Croke Park can lift ban for Euro 2008
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 12, 2002
Replying to a question from Enda Kenny, leader of the Opposition in the Dail, he said he was confident the necessary co-operation would be forthcoming. “The GAA have made their position perfectly clear if not wholly satisfactory as yet from our point of view. “I am still of the opinion, however, that if the 2008 Championship is awarded to Ireland and Scotland, some of the games will be played in Croke Park. “Ahern still has not given up on his aspiration that a national sports stadium will be built in Dublin in time to stage European games. In a notorious U-turn, the Taoiseach stated some time ago that in the current financial climate state funding would not be made available for the project. Instead, he expressed the hope that the private sector would become involved in building the stadium on the site originally proposed at Abbotstown in North West Dublin… “The GAA have made their position perfectly clear if not wholly satisfactory as yet from our point of view. “I am still of the opinion, however, that if the 2008 Championship is awarded to Ireland and Scotland, some of the games will be played in Croke Park. “Ahern still has not given up on his aspiration that a national sports stadium will be built in Dublin in time to stage European games. In response to advertisements in the press, some 23 private concerns have signalled their interest in the project and according to a government spokesman, discussions are ongoing.

Euro 2008 hopes suffer blow
BBC News – Apr 13, 2002
The Scottish and Irish football associations had indicated to Uefa that they would be putting forward a joint bid to host the tournament. But a motion to allow “foreign” sports to be played at the GAA’s Croke Park was voted down by 197-106 in Ireland on Saturday, a larger defeat than when the subject was last raised. And, although the Scottish Executive insist that the bid has not been dealt a killer blow, it leaves Ireland struggling to provide the two major stadia required for their end of the bid. "

The bid is still on course

"

Scottish Executive spokesman

A Scottish Executive spokesman told BBC Scotland: “The Irish agreed to provide two stadia. “These were never identified and that was not necessary to meet the conditions of the bid. “The bid is still on course. ”

Their other options are a renovated Lansdowne Road and a purpose-built stadium on the outskirts of Dublin… But the joint bid must submit their proposals before then and could already be dead in the water before Saturday’s decision can be overturned. The loss of Croke Park as an option could boost the Irish government’s argument for the need of a national stadium – the so-called “Bertie’s Bowl” – in May’s general elections. However, the Irish would then also have to endure the added cost of upgrading Lansdowne Road to progress the Euro 2008 bid. Related to this story:.

CHANGING TIMES AS CANDIDATES REGISTER NO OBJECTIONS TO SHARING THEIR…
Irish Independent – Mar 2, 2002
The financial demands on the GAA are increasing all the time and if we can use the rent from Croke Park to fund areas of activity, it makes sense to avail of it. “Of course, it’s a matter for Congress to decide in the first instance whether to transfer the power to decide on the use of Croke Park over to Central Council. ” PJ McGrath (Mayo) “It’s a decision for the future because the redevelopment work in Croke Park isn’t completed but, as a general principle, I wouldn’t have any problem with playing other sports in Croke Park, provided they didn’t in any way interfere with our own games. “When it’s finished, Croke Park will be totally different stadium to the one which was demolished and the requirements in terms of running it won’t be the same either, which is something we have to be very conscious of. “It’s a very big issue, one which the GAA should and will consider very carefully, starting at Congress when we debate whether to give Central Council the power to decide on the use of Croke Park. “Obviously finance would be a key factor in any decision to open up Croke Park. We would need to get a very good deal and there can be no question of coming under pressure to open the stadium for a minimal return.

Arsenal and Manchester United’s Champions League demolition jobs…
BBC News – Mar 2, 2002
Arsenal and Manchester United’s Champions League demolition jobs were under scrutiny

In addition, the boys had a full weekend of Premiership and Nationwide League action to look forward to. On the international front, Scotland and Ireland’s joint bid to host Euro 2008 caused some controversy. Don’t forget you can continue to e-mail the team and log-on live after Saturday’s show to hear their replies. Grace Pickering, UK

Just because the Spurs defence was rubbish, DOES NOT mean that Andy Cole should play for England. He may have shut up Glenn at a club level, but remains terrible at international level. We should forget about Cole and bring on youngsters like Vassell, Ricketts and Ameobi… On the international front, Scotland and Ireland’s joint bid to host Euro 2008 caused some controversy. I think Andy Cole has proved in the Champions League and the Premiership that he can score goals and I think he is a very good addition to any squad.

Doors closing as opportunity knocks for GAA
Irish Independent – Apr 8, 2002
If Croke Park is opened to soccer and rugby then soon all GAA grounds in Ireland will be the same. All the GAA has to do to prevent this is to bring in an exclusive rule for Croke Park and enshrine the power regarding the use of ALL GAA pitches to the Central Council. The Government is simply using the GAA at the moment to boost the chances of Ireland co-hosting Euro 2008. Ireland will not be hosting that event so this is a non-runner. The GAA should not be allowing other sports bodies to interfere in its affairs like this. No other sports body IS doing that. There is no pressure from soccer or rugby to play in Croke Park.

Mountain to climb for Celtic bid
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 3, 2002
Only last month Rangers defender Lorenzo Amoruso branded the Hampden Park pitch “a disgrace”. He said: “It is an insult to the world-class players who will have to play the Champions League final on it. The final is planned for Vienna. Three other factors make the bid organisers sure of success: Switzerland will host the 2002 European Youth Championships in May; UEFA have asked the countries to be on standby for the 2004 tournament if hosts Portugal continue to have problems; and Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA, is a Swiss national… This is Austria’s third bid. They entered the contest for 1996 on their own. That went to England and their joint bid for the 2004 event with Hungary was pipped by Portugal. Aberdeen have appealed against the red card shown.

St Pat’s buy time in registration row
Irish Independent – Mar 22, 2002
Clearly, speed is of the essence as the Premier Division finishes on Sunday week and every club, not just St Pat’s, needs to know where they stand. If, as is expected, the Saints have 15 points deducted, Shelbourne will be crowned champions and Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians will be in prime position to secure the UEFA Cup and Inter Toto Cup places. Dooney has decided not to involve himself in deliberations on the Mbabazi case. “In view of the circumstances, I’ve feel it would be better if others made the call,” he said. It’s understood that League chairman Michael Hyland, treasurer Declan O’Luanaigh and executive secretary Donal Crowther will rule on the matter. Meanwhile, FAI general secretary Brendan Menton insisted last night he had no inkling of the Mbabazi case. “The first I knew about it was on Tuesday morning and I was shocked… I can’t comment as it might come before me at some stage,” he said. While there have been calls for Dooney to stand down, Menton felt it would be “wholly inappropriate for me to comment about the position of an employee of the League. ” Menton was on a flying visit to Glasgow yesterday to meet with the Scottish FA for further talks on the joint Euro 2008 bid. Riding shotgun with the FAI were representatives of the Irish Sports Council and Bord Failte, who have agreed to put up Euro125,000 towards the FAI’s bid costs, estimated at Euro500,000. “The total costs between ourselves and the Scots will be around Euro2m and we’ve got to pay a quarter of that. The support of Bord Failte is a great help,” said Menton.

McCarthy pleads for Croke Park soccer
Irish Independent – Mar 5, 2002
Given the all-seater stadia requirements, he added, Lansdowne Road would face having its capacity slashed to just 25,000 by the installation of extra seating. However, he stressed that Ireland’s preparations for the World Cup Finals in Japan and Korea are now “full steam ahead”, with Saipan having been selected as a preparation venue for the crunch Group Games with Germany, Saudi Arabia and Cameroon. Meanwhile, FAI chief Brendan Menton last night called on the Government to fulfil their commitment to build the National Stadium in Abbotstown – irrespective whether the bid to stage the Euro 2008 finals is successful. “The Euro bid has become tangled with the National Stadium, largely because of the timing of the application to UEFA, but they are two separate issues,” he said. “If the bid is successful, and I believe it has an excellent chance, that would be brilliant for Irish sport and the Irish economy, but even if it’s not, the National Stadium needs to be built come what may,” he added. “Ideally, I’d like to have seen things moved forward by now as there is an absolute need for the National Stadium… Meanwhile, FAI chief Brendan Menton last night called on the Government to fulfil their commitment to build the National Stadium in Abbotstown – irrespective whether the bid to stage the Euro 2008 finals is successful. “Ideally, I’d like to have seen things moved forward by now as there is an absolute need for the National Stadium.
