Defiant Blatter predicts World Cup shocks
CNN – Apr 22, 2002
Blatter has also had to act to shore up insurance for the World Cup after Axa raised its premium following September 11. And this year FIFA has had to safeguard its television revenue as KirchMedia, which holds the rights to broadcast matches, struggles to survive. The president says FIFA has TV contracts worth 1. 3 billion Swiss francs ($800 million) for this World Cup and 1. 5 francs ($900 million) for the 2006 finals. But not everyone is convinced the game is in good hands and now Hayatou, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), wants Blatter’s job. Hayatou, from Cameroon, is hoping for the support of Lennart Johansson, chief of UEFA, European football’s governing body.

International rescue
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 24, 2002
Still, there are some nations out there so bad that you could get a game. Those teams lurking at the bottom of the world rankings are crying out for your expatriate talent. Follow the guidelines below and you could grace the 2006 World Cup in Germany – or at least the qualifiers. (NB In the unlikely event you’ve ever played international football, then sorry, this is no use to you. Friendlies, however, don’t count)… (NB In the unlikely event you’ve ever played international football, then sorry, this is no use to you. Friendlies, however, don’t count). Montserrat Known as The Tremors, owing to their volcano-prone homeland, Montserrat is officially the worst football team known to man. Currently lying in 203rd and final pace on FIFA’s world ranking, football is not Montserrat’s most popular sport. That honour falls to cricket, but they’re not much cop at that either.

SI.com – Apr 23, 2002
The humidity might be a factor for the Europeans, but I don’t think so because we know how to prepare. Players may be tired from a long season so it could be that a player who missed half the season with injury and is physically very fresh could be the star of the tournament. Which player will be the star of the World Cup? Football nowadays is more about the collective. That has grown more important over the past 20 years. But there are always key players, such as Zidane, Figo and Owen. Some Argentinian and Brazilian players may make an impact but I don’t think a new name will emerge. What are your chances? Our strength is that we know what we are capable of, and that we have a philosophy of playing with style… He still has the ability to play at a World Cup, but he has retired from the national side and we have a marvellous new young keeper in Thomas Sorensen. What does the future hold for you after the World Cup? I have signed for another five years with Denmark and I feel good about the job. We have good young players coming up, and can look forward with optimism to the 2004 European Championship and the 2006 World Cup.

The junior teams will name their coaches all right but it is only proper that they work in line with the aspirations of the senior national team coach. Kojo: For how many years do you want to have the coach here? Ben: It’s a long-term thing. At the moment, we will go for a two-year renewable contract.

Germans struggle with self-doubt
CNN International – Apr 22, 2002
The German team simply were not good enough. Current coach Rudi Voeller booked Germany’s place for this summer’s finals, but only after a playoff against Ukraine. Now Germans do not know where to spend their World Cup holiday. In defeat, fans get to know the meaning of European Community. Unprepared and unprotected, they are made the target of collective malice from all EU citizens on any foreign camp site. This year, they will stay at home or go to the Netherlands since the Dutch are not even going to Japan and South Korea after failing to qualify. It has been hard to sell Japan and South Korea to German supporters… The TV networks will battle jet lag to broadcast matches in the early mornings. “High Noon” in South Korea starring Rudi Voeller is too much for the mental state of German fans. Moreover, watching football in the morning, perhaps at work, and without potato chips and beer is not very Germanic. But Germans will still enjoy the fun of the tournament, even if the later stages do not feature Voeller and his squad. Fans appreciate a good match — TV-ratings for Euro 2000 were extremely high in Germany, even after the team lost by three goals to Portugal. Football fever is bound to spread. The rate of sick employees unable to make it to work will rise.

Vogts targets friendly with England
rte.ie – Apr 24, 2002
“I’m looking for strong teams for matches, maybe we can play a friendly against England and we are looking at Italy”, said Vogts. Vogts is set to play a major role at the UEFA Congress in Stockholm as part of the joint Euro 2008 bid team from both Scotland and Ireland. With Vogts’ native country, Germany hosting the 2006 World Cup, he is set to put his weight behind the joint Celtic bid. The German has already taken a light hearted side-swipe at other competing bids which include a joint Austria, Switzerland bid and a four-way Scandinavian bid including Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. “I’m so happy I can help football and I’m sure that we have the best supporters in the world with their passion for the game, said Vogts. “Also we have the biggest stadium and I’m sure footballing fans will want to come to a footballing nation, not a skiing nation”. The new campaign logo was designed by eight-year-old Robbie Hutt from Inverness and was unveiled in Dublin by the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Ireland goalkeeping legend Packie Bonner… With Vogts’ native country, Germany hosting the 2006 World Cup, he is set to put his weight behind the joint Celtic bid.
