Vogts forecasts better times for Scotland
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 18, 2002
“I am looking only towards qualification for the next tournament. I am optimistic about the young players from England who have come into the squad but think also of the older players who were not available to us – Hutchison, Matteo, Ferguson, Sullivan, Naysmith and Burley – that’s a lot of quality. “When we play Denmark in August you will see the team which will be against the Faroes at the start of our Euro 2004 campaign. Meanwhile, I want to say a special thank you to the Tartan Army. They gave me a wonderful reception and they cheered the team after the game even though we lost. “I want that atmosphere and that passion at Hampden Park when we play our tournament games and we can have that even against the Faroe Islands if Scotland are well-placed in the table. “Scotland have confirmed the dates of three fixtures in next month’s tour of the Far East.

Bulgaria’s national tragedy
Sofia Echo – Apr 25, 2002
The first time it took $50,000 to play a control meeting with Ecuador on March 28 and on April 17 the team disbursed $80,000 to meet Mexico. Both matches were played at Giants Stadium in New York and the two ended with losses ? 3-0 to Ecuador and 1-0 to Mexico. The reason for these frequent trips over the Atlantic were obviously not spurred by some sports-orientated motivation. It was rather a means to infuse foreign currency into the pockets of the Bulgarian Football Union. The good times the team registered eight years ago, when, in the same Giants Stadium, the Bulgarian national team reached the semis at the World Cup in 1994, are long gone. Then, the Bulgarian football headquarters collected as much as $9 million, three of which were for earning a place in the world semifinals, the remaining six for each of the five matches played in the US. Despite solid revenues a year later, in 1995, when the acting management of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) of President Ivan Slavkov came to power, the cash resources were reduced to a mere $43,000… Then, the Bulgarian football headquarters collected as much as $9 million, three of which were for earning a place in the world semifinals, the remaining six for each of the five matches played in the US. Despite solid revenues a year later, in 1995, when the acting management of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) of President Ivan Slavkov came to power, the cash resources were reduced to a mere $43,000. An audit could not trace where the remaining resources had gone, finding only receipts for banners of the national team for as much as $8,000. During the next year, 1996, the situation remained unchanged and football players from the national team threatened to boycott the European finals in Great Britain, though, for the first time in history, they had won the right to appear in such an event. It is a public secret that the main revenue of the BFU is formed from the placements of the national team in world and European finals, however the Bulgarian team managed its way to the 1998 finals of France?s World Cup. If the Bulgarians had succeeded to qualify for World Cup 2002 in Japan and Korea, the BFU would automatically cash in $3 million, which would be complemented with additional financial rewards for each point won in the finals. Of course, the BFU can rely on annual receivables from FIFA headquarters, disbursed to the so-called poor national federations.

Caldwell future uncertain
BBC News – May 8, 2002
Caldwell has been in excellent form since joining the Easter Road side in February, helping steer the club away from relegation and winning a place in the Scotland senior squad. However, the Edinburgh club have begun to adopt cost-cutting measures, including the re-negotiation of some players’ contracts, to survive the financial crisis in the Scottish Premier League. Caldwell, who is hoping to cement his place in Berti Vogts’ side for the Euro 2004 qualifiers during Scotland’s forthcoming Far East tour, may have to look elsewhere in order to further his international ambitions. “I have one game to go – against St Johnstone on Sunday – and then my loan deal ends and I will be back at Newcastle… “I have one game to go – against St Johnstone on Sunday – and then my loan deal ends and I will be back at Newcastle. “All I want is the chance to play regular first team football and I’m not sure I can get that at Newcastle. “If not, I might have to move but I will need to speak to the manager and see what he says. “I have loved my time at Hibs and would love to stay, but with the situation in Scottish football, it is difficult for them and I wouldn’t think it was going to happen. “There are going to be a lot of cuts in staff and wages and it will be difficult. But hopefully clubs will keep going and keep Scottish football going.

O’Neill to see out contract at Celtic
Telegraph.co.uk – May 7, 2002
The 50-year-old former Leicester City manager claimed the only way he would leave would be if Celtic sacked him. “There are only a few managers in football who are unsackable, like Brian Clough, Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson – and I am not one of them. If Celtic do not sack me I intend to see out my contract,” he said. A Celtic spokesman said: “It is safe to say if Leeds or any team approached us, the club would do everything in its power to keep Martin. “Other names who remain in the frame for the Leeds job include Mick McCarthy, the Republic of Ireland manager, Guus Hiddink, who led South Korea to the World Cup semi-finals, and former England coach Terry Venables… Lemerre coached France to victory in Euro 2000 and the Confederations Cup in 2001. He will remain as technical director in an overseeing role but will now be available to turn to club management. The FFF will now look for a candidate to lead France into Euro 2004. France failed to win a game or score a goal at the World Cup, which they entered as defending champions. Lemerre’s replacement is expected to be named before the end of the month.

Sven looked like a postman at a funeral
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 26, 2002
Shortly before that, Ulrika issues a brief statement to the effect that her affair with Sven, if an affair is what it was, is now over. And with that the matter is closed, everybody is back where they were at the beginning – and the whole tricky business of an England suit launch has been swept into the wardrobe, not to be heard of again until Euro 2004, by which time Sven will probably be managing Manchester United in any case. We’ve marvelled here before at Sven’s remarkable media-management skills – his supreme ability to lower the heat in a time of trouble, where previous holders of his job would have been tipping petrol on the flames and setting fire to their own hair – but this really was a magnificent performance, even by his own standards. CONSIDER how wrong the suit issue could have gone. Sven has always been (and we know this from the way he never says anything about it) a thoughtful student of the game’s history.

SI.com – Apr 23, 2002
Their world ranking doesn’t matter because they will be playing at home. Will the conditions affect you? We will use experts to prepare for all unusual or adverse conditions. No one will ever win the World Cup if they have not adapted to the conditions. If all our players are OK physically and psychologically, we can beat anyone. Who will win the World Cup? All my thoughts are centered on June 5, 10 and 14, our Group D games. People keep saying that Portugal are among the favorites. We can dream — nobody can take that away from us — but the history of Portuguese football tells us to be careful… Many of our players play in foreign countries. They acquire experience, and the value of that experience from France, Italy, Spain and England is enormous for us. Will you be coach for Euro 2004? My commitment with the Portuguese FA is on paper — up to Euro 2004. But I have told the football authorities that a number of important measures must be implemented. We do need a training center for the national team. Did you always believe that you would qualify for this World Cup? We were the best team in the group, but the pressure was unbelievable. After the game against Estonia in Tallinn, I discovered I had lost more than 3kg without having done any exercise! Are you happy that the players who were suspended following the Euro 2000 semi-final defeat are available? Nuno Gomes, Abel Xavier and Paulo Bento are now back from suspension and they have all been part of recent squads.

Q & A: Belgium coach Robert Waseige
SI.com – Apr 23, 2002
Obviously, our first game, against Japan, is very important if we want to reach the next stage. Who will win the World Cup? Argentina are the obvious favorites but you cannot rule out either France or Brazil. Who will be the surprises? I think that Japan are going to be the main surprise, which may not be good news for us. No one in Europe knows much about them, but at least we have seen them on video. Which player will be the star? Francesco Totti is the player I most like watching. He is very strong, has enormous talent and I’d like to think he will be the star of the tournament, followed perhaps by Zidane and Raul. Will the conditions affect you? We’ll be there on May 23, which will give us plenty of time to acclimatise to the Japanese weather… I don’t like to adapt for the sake of the opposition. Do you feel the pressure knowing that Belgium’s disappointing showing at France 98 effectively ended Georges Leekens’ time as coach? I don’t feel any pressure because my contract takes me up only until the end of the finals. The Belgian FA president, Jan Peters, has said that he wants to extend my contract until Euro 2004. If everything works out well for us in Japan, then maybe I’ll stay on longer. Related informationStats.
