Operation rules out Ferdinand for six weeks

“I think he deserves to play because he’s still playing very well. I’ve seen him four or five times this season and been impressed. “You can’t just look ahead to the finals of Euro 2004: we have to qualify for them. So I think we should pick the best team for every game. Otherwise you risk not qualifying. It’s very important that we get off to a good start. We know Slovakia are a good team, especially at home, and we know Turkey have an excellent team, so the group is not easy… “You can’t just look ahead to the finals of Euro 2004: we have to qualify for them. So I think we should pick the best team for every game. Otherwise you risk not qualifying. It’s very important that we get off to a good start. We know Slovakia are a good team, especially at home, and we know Turkey have an excellent team, so the group is not easy. It would be a big help, therefore, to have a good start in the first game against Slovakia. “Eriksson’s real problem, where Seaman is concerned, is that alternative goalkeepers are so thin on the ground.

The Yorkshireman hade been under increasing pressure ever since the end of the World Cup finals in the summer, mainly because of his rift with Roy Keane and a poor start to the Ireland’s qualification campaign for the European Championships. McCarthy, who led the Republic to the second round of the World Cup, has seen his side lose its two opening Euro 2004 qualification matches against… The defeats had led to calls that he should resign to allow the return of Keane into the international fold after he was sent home from the World Cup following an argument with McCarthy. However, it seemed that McCarthy had changed his mind and the FAI were willing to let him go if an amicable settlement could be agreed. The Republic have a friendly against Greece in a fortnight, and Under-21 boss Don Givens is set to be named as caretaker-manager for that match. The FAI will then set about finding a replacement for McCarthy and will hope to have one installed before their next Euro 2004 qualifier, away to Georgia at the end of March. At least four names will be on the shortlist of successors.

Wales pay £8,000 for Bellamy flight
Telegraph.co.uk – May 9, 2002
Newcastle United initially told Bellamy he would not be flying out with Wales for tomorrow’s opening Euro 2004 qualifier against Finland. However, after the striker turned out for the reserves on Tuesday night, Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson relented. Following a medical check-up, Bellamy was given the all-clear to travel to Helsinki.

Hughes flattened by FIFA’s u-turn
Telegraph.co.uk – May 11, 2002
However, yesterday FIFA pointed out there had been an amendment incorporated into the existing statutes which said that on match days designated as “non-competitive” dates, players could be called to duty only 48 hours in advance. Because this month’s international date had been designated for friendlies, Wales cannot invoke the four-day ruling. So Hughes will not be able to call his squad together until Nov 18 – the day Wales embark on the 6. 5-hour flight to Azerbaijan where there is a four-hour time difference. Wales brought the fixture forward from next June because of concerns over high temperatures in Baku. It is embarrassing for Hughes, the Football Association of Wales but most of all FIFA, who did not seem to know their own rules and regulations properly. Having secured wins against Finland and Italy in their first two games, Hughes wanted to do everything possible to help preparations for the tricky trip to Azerbaijan.

Irish relishing mist opportunity

Yet results and performances will dictate how people feel. “McCarthy is confident that his team can leave the Russian capital with a good result: “We have the ability to play well against anyone and I think I am justified in saying that,” he said. “People expect us to win now but it’s a nice pressure. It’s a better feeling when people feel good about you than the opposite.

Thieves snatch Scotland strips
BBC News – May 9, 2002
They made off with about 100 strips and Adidas training tops, worth about ?3,500 in total. Lothian and Borders Police said they were alerted when an alarm went off in Rose Street, at the rear of the shop, at about 0100 BST on Thursday. Witnesses reported hearing a vehicle speeding away from the scene. A police spokeswoman appealed for help from anyone who may have witnessed the incident… “Obviously they should only be sold and purchased through official suppliers. “We think the thieves will try to sell the kits on, possibly through markets or similar outlets, and we would like to hear from anyone offered them for sale. ”

The new strip will be worn by Berti Vogts’ team during the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign. A navy blue-and-white pin-striped shirt, with white collars and cuffs, is complimented by white shorts and socks. Launch ceremony

The shorts have a blue band round the bottom and the socks a blue band around the top. The new away strip mirrors the home strip, but in red and navy blue. The strip was modelled by Celtic’s Rab Douglas, Everton’s David Weir, Dundee United’s Paul Gallacher and Newcastle United’s Gary Caldwell at the launch ceremony.

Scotland told to expect a scrap
Telegraph.co.uk – May 9, 2002
The party flew out from Glasgow yesterday without Gary Naysmith, a late withdrawal, who joined Dominic Matteo and Derek McInnes on the list of Scotland casualties. The Everton defender injured his ankle in the defeat at Manchester City last Saturday and despite treatment throughout the week was deemed unfit to travel. Given the relative strengths of the sides,… Vogts showed the video to his troops at their Torshavn training base last night to reinforce his message that this game will be a scrap, but that Scotland must not become embroiled in individual vendettas. His point is pertinent. Eighteen months ago Colin Hendry, then captain of his country, had his international career effectively ended by a ban imposed by FIFA after the world governing body of football examined television evidence which showed him elbowing Nicola Albani, a young San Marino substitute, in the throat at the end of a World Cup qualifying match at Hampden Park. Four Scottish FA officials were forced to get off Scotland’s flight yesterday because the plane was carrying too much weight. David Findlay, David Moir, Colin Banks and John Dickson had to board a later flight after a bad weather report forced Atlantic Airways to take on more fuel in case the plane had to be diverted back to Aberdeen.

There are times when the market will emphasize rotation, making trend following less effective. That’s why it can be so important to make sure strong trends are backed by strong fundamentals.
