Harassed Vogts finds ally in Hiddinck
Telegraph.co.uk – May 17, 2002
“I know that Ferguson and Lambert are the first choices in midfield, but I need another player there, maybe Gareth Williams. Dominic Matteo’s best position is in the back line”. “The Scots are good players on the ball, but not without the ball. The problem we have is in defence. The whole team has a difficulty. Against Korea the midfield did nothing and did not stay close enough to our opponents. “While Vogts ponders his limited options, Hiddinck urged him to continue in the direction he has begun.

Netherlands visit spoils US viewers
USA Today – May 20, 2002
viewers Dear Eventual Winner of FIFA’s Power Struggle, I’m writing today with an unusual request for the betterment of the game. In the future, please consider the United States part of Europe for all international. com – Netherlands visit spoils U… is making, the team
will miss out on the World Cup one of these years. Better to lose honorably
in Ireland than to be robbed on a bad call in an ugly game. It’s not that I’m being elitist. I recognize the progress
being made in this region. Trinidad & Tobago has a couple of players in the
Premier League — Stern John, who’ll be there next season with Birmingham
City, spent some formative years in the A-League and MLS. Costa Rica is a good
team that may surprise people this summer. Honduras is unlucky not to be going
to the Cup.

Vogts’ grounds for complaint
Telegraph.co.uk – May 15, 2002
As the Scotland manager got his players moving, watched by the British ambassador in Korea, stadium officials apologised profusely for a mix-up which they hope will not be repeated when they host their half of the World Cup finals. One member of Scotland’s backroom staff said: “Berti had no problem with the decision not to take chances with the pitch in the stadium but he could not understand why proper arrangements had not been made so that training could go on as normal. “He let the Koreans know that this was not good enough for his Scotland team and they apologised. He is used to everything being organised with German precision and he took charge of the situation. The Koreans said they hadn’t expected such bad weather, which had obviously thrown them completely. “Once training began, Vogts emphasised his hands-on style by stopping proceedings periodically to emphasise tactical points. Christian Dailly, who leads Scotland today for the first time in 33 international appearances, said: “The manager pulled me aside yesterday and said I would be captain… I have said to the younger ones that to take part in the World Cup is a something I can’t express properly. We certainly don’t intend to be left out next time. “As Vogts continues to comb his new recruits for candidates for the Euro 2004 campaign, when the Scots’ main rivals for qualification rivals are Germany, he took heart from Wales’ victory over his native country on Tuesday. He said: “The Germans don’t like playing against a big striker as I remember when we met Scotland in Glasgow a few years ago and Duncan Ferguson was very good. The Welsh put a lot of pressure on Germany, who didn’t enjoy coming up against John Hartson. “Kevin Kyle is very like Ferguson. Scott Dobie is fast but we need a pair up front and we will see what works best for us in this game and our matches in Hong Kong, too.

Celtic to appeal over O’Neill ban
Telegraph.co.uk – May 12, 2002
Bobo Balde, Joos Valgaeren, Momo Sylla, Alan Thompson and Ulirk Laursen all sustained knocks on the visit to Edinburgh but all will be available for tomorrow’s jaunt across the city. Sutton, however, is another matter and was still suffering some discomfort from the hip injury he picked up in training on Tuesday. The injury is not thought to be particularly serious but a decision on his fitness for the test at Ibrox will be deferred until after training this morning. Johan Mjallby will not be part of the travelling squad. The derby has come just a little too soon for the Swedish central defender, who is back in training after a long-term injury and will train with the Under-21s on Sunday with a view to playing in their side on Monday evening. If he comes through that process successfully, Mjallby may be included in the squad which flies out to Galicia for the return leg against Celta Vigo. Rangers, who led Livingston 4-0 just after half-time at Ibrox on Wednesday, only to end 4-3 ahead against 10men, will not pursue an interest in Les Ferdinand, although the club is still on the lookout for another forward… And the deal, which will confirm Hughes as manager of his country until 2006, could earn him an additional £500,000 if he rewrites Welsh footballing history. After extending an unbeaten run to a record-equalling eight games, and taking Wales five points clear at the top of their qualifying group, Hughes will earn £200,000 by securing qualification for the finals of Euro 2004 for one of the poorer European footballing nations. And if the former Manchester United striker can reach the World Cup finals, in Germany in 2006, it will be worth in the region of £300,000 in additional bonuses.

‘Dream’ debut for Earnshaw
BBC News – May 14, 2002
The Cardiff striker grabbed the only goal 12 seconds into the second half when
he latched on to a John Hartson flick-on and finished with aplomb past Oliver
Kahn. The victory will give great hope to Wales as they build towards the start of
their Euro 2004 qualifying campaign in the autumn. Earnshaw told BBC Wales: “I can’t believe it, I don’t really know what to
say, it’s just a dream and there’s no words for it. It’s amazing really… “We took our chance and defended great when we had to. “It’s not as much of a surprise to us as it might be to some people because
we know we have been progressing. ”

Germnay coach Rudi Voller, meanwhile, played down the signifcance of the defeat despite it coming just a few weks before the World Cup. Voller, who played in the last German side to lose in Cardiff, blamed a lackadaisical approach from his players for
the defeat. “We started to play well too late in the game and we were too
friendly and uncommitted,” he said. “Some of the players were coming back from injury and we could see they were not in great form.

Vogts plays down Euro hopes
rte.ie – May 18, 2002
When he succeeded Craig Brown in March, the former Germany coach had hoped to surprise his homeland by pipping them to first place in a group also containing Iceland, Lithuania and the Faroe Islands. But following three successive defeats against countries who will be taking part in the World Cup, Vogts is now aiming merely to hold off the also-rans for a place in the play-offs. “I think we can do that (qualify). But we are looking not at the first place… But following three successive defeats against countries who will be taking part in the World Cup, Vogts is now aiming merely to hold off the also-rans for a place in the play-offs. “I think we can do that (qualify). But we are looking not at the first place. We are looking for the second place,” Vogts said. “We have to look for the games against Iceland and Lithuania. We need all the points from them. “”Then, the games against the Germans are easy games.

Vogts brings Scots full circle
Telegraph.co.uk – May 20, 2002
“That is the formation we will use – it’s the way ahead,” said Vogts afterwards. “You can see the problem we have with our midfield, because we lack experience there. Of course, when we start our qualifying campaign for Euro 2004 we expect to have Barry Ferguson and Paul Lambert back and that will help a good deal. “Kevin Kyle did well today and Lee Wilkie when he came on at half-time. It had always been the plan to bring Gary Caldwell off at half-time. “Despite the clammy heat – the temperature was around 85 degrees and humidity was high – the Scots were able to play the game at a pace which suited them, and the first half hour passed without much in the way of incident, partly because the pitch was heavy after the previous day’s downpour and the grass was long. The South Africans, much less potent than the side which won the African Nations Cup in 1996, contented themselves with long-range efforts from Teboho Mokoena and Benni McCarthy, neither of whom was on target… The most enlivening sight thereafter was that of Turkey warming up behind one goal and the Hong Kong XI behind the other as they prepared to take the field for the second instalment of the afternoon’s double header. Until, that is, Ross almost caught Vonk out with a chip which the goalkeeper anxiously tipped over for a corner in the closing seconds. Scotland could not take advantage and, as they retreated upfield, Ross gave away possession from a throw-in, from which Koumantarakis inflicted the sort of injury Vogts always warns his youngsters against.
