McFadden upgraded but misses flight
Telegraph.co.uk – May 24, 2002
The press corps will not return until this morning and there will probably be some satisfaction among the players and officials that the media will be more fatigued than themselves. Several players remarked after the 4-0 victory in the Hong Kong Stadium that it had been important to get the media “off their backs”, which indicates some sort of conspiracy theory at work within the Scottish ranks. Yet, barring isolated criticisms, the tour has been accepted as a worthwhile enterprise, fulfilling Vogts’ desire to test his younger players against decent opposition, if not the creaking old pros and pub league players. It is quite proper to enter certain caveats about the schedule and its consequences. There have been certain inconsistencies in the manager’s utterances over the past few weeks… For example, he complained about the low ratio of training days to matches, but it was Vogts who insisted on jetting halfway round the world to a region in which rain falls heavily and regularly so that jetlag and climate combined to limit the squad’s preparations. Vogts insisted Scotland needed to encounter a decent standard of opposition, namely, South Korea and South Africa, because nothing could be learned from games against the likes of Liechtenstein or Malta. Apart from anything which happened on the field, the notable feature of the tour was his emotional fulmination against a mysterious source who had apparently bracketed him with the Second World War, a coupling which the manager insisted would permit the German media to undermine him before Scotland meet his homeland in Euro 2004. This episode turned out to be truly bizarre. When the origin of his wrath was identified, after much trawling of the internet by the SFA press officer, it turned out to be a comment in an article in The Scotsman to the effect that statistically, Vogts had got off to the worst start of any Scotland manager since the Second World War. This, it must be said, was very far from being a hanging offence, although it was inaccurate – Scotland had no pre-war managers, nor any for 10 years afterwards – even if the reporter concerned became the subject of further managerial wrath by repeating certain information which had been classed as off the record. It was probably just as well, then, the Scotland boss was unaware that the same newspaper’s website was carrying a poll under the headline: `Berti Vogts – should he be sacked?’ Or perhaps not, because there is a growing suspicion that the manager may be not be above manufacturing a typhoon in a teacup for his own ends.

Karpin ready to bow out
BBC News – May 24, 2002
“After the World Cup, I’ll stop playing for the Russian team,” he says. “I’m not young any more. I’m 33 and realise that every year now would be tougher and tougher. “When Russia start their Euro 2004 qualification campagin, I’ll be out of the squad. ”

While his Celta Vigo team-mate Alexander Mostovoi, a year older at 34, has not ruled out continuing at international level for a while longer, Karpin does not see the point. Top-class coach

“I’m not 20 any more.

Berti’s babes to watch
BBC News – May 26, 2002
But the new national manager will be forgiven all by the Tartan Army if the Far East tour signals the rebirth of the nation as a force on the international stage. Berti Vogts has had to endure a fair amount of criticism after losing four out of his first four games in charge. Most of that has, however, emanated from an English media unable to grasp the concept of a long-term strategy and German counterparts determined to put the knife into a former hero now trying to mastermind his homeland’s demise at Euro 2004. With automatic choices like Barry Ferguson, Paul Lambert and Don Hutchison being injured or given an early summer rest, defeats were hardly unexpected, to be endured, although not enjoyed. The point was to give others the chance to shine and the likes of Lee Wilkie, Maurice Ross, Kevin Kyle, Gary Caldwell, Scott Dobie and Graham Alexander rose to the challenge and deserve the opportunity to become permanent fixtures in Vogts’ revolution… 5

Neil Sullivan (Tottenham Hotspur, goalkeeper): Played in the 4-1 drubbing by South Korea and did little to enhance his foundering reputation, although at least three of the finishes could be classed as stunning. 5

Paul Gallacher (Dundee United, goalkeeper): The emerging talent was only given 14 minutes against Hong Kong and must be content to remain number three for a while longer. 6

Neil Alexander (Cardiff City, goalkeeper): By not being given his first cap, it must be assumed that Alexander failed to grab his chance to overtake the more established members of the squad. 7

Christian Dailly (West Ham Utd, defender): Berti Vogts sees Dailly, captain for the Far East tour, as a mainstay of his defence. The West Ham man looked more comfortable in the middle of the back three adopted against Hong Kong, but doubts remain about his marking against higher quality opposition.

Collina’s cheating clampdown
BBC News – May 29, 2002
But not getting the opportunity to referee a World Cup final would, he claimed, not be a disappointment. He said: “I had the opportunity to referee an Olympic tournament final and a Champions League final. I took part in Euro 2000 and I hope to take part in the Euro 2004 tournament. So I’m happy for what I did. It’s not a problem. ”

Bowyer transfer-listed
BBC News – May 22, 2002
“Given the contract
offered by the club, which would have elevated Lee to the elite of the highest
paid players at Leeds United, and given the support the club has shown Lee
during the past turbulent 30 months, we are disappointed to have this reached
this juncture. “We are surprised that this is the outcome after months of what appeared to
be positive talks. ”

Controversy

Earlier this year Bowyer was found not guilty of affray and grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to an assault on Asian student Sarfraz Najeib. He was also then put up for sale after refusing to accept a fine – thought to be around ?90,000 – imposed by the club for breaking a code of conduct on the night of the attack. 7m – a
British record fee for a teenager at the time… In February 2002, he was banned for six matches and fined ?10,000 by the
Football Association after being found guilty of elbowing Liverpool midfielder
Gary McAllister and also swearing at referee Jeff Winter in a match against
Arsenal. The Najeib court case prevented Bowyer from fulfilling his World Cup
ambitions. But England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has intimated the
midfielder will be part of his plans for the Euro 2004 qualifiers. Robbie Keane, Olivier Dacourt, Harry Kewell and even England
defender Rio Ferdinand have also been the subject of transfer rumours since Ridsdale warned the club would have to off-load some of their players.

International Football: Vogts unfazed by dismal run
Telegraph.co.uk – May 21, 2002
Vogts, though, insists the tally of losses is barren of meaning until his real task begins in September, when he must steer the Scots out into the choppy waters of the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign. At some stage over the next year he should be able to call upon the likes of Barry Ferguson, Paul Lambert, Craig Burley, Callum Davidson, Gary Naysmith, Don Hutchison, Dominic Matteo and Neil McCann as he attempts to end the run of failing to qualify for the finals of three major tournaments in succession – but as Vogts will discover the hard way, it is rare for a Scottish squad to have a full complement of experienced players. In fact, if Scotland were required to play qualifying matches right now, only McCann would be available, the others all being injured… So we have identified a couple of players who might do it for us, although we have to see how they perform in games which matter. We won’t really know until then. “It is Vogts’ intention to speak to every player individually at the end of the tour, emphasising that while some have already begun to display the maturity and qualities he requires, the door will not be closed to others, so that in two or three years they may have acquired the necessary characteristics.

Women’s Golf: Solheim switch
Telegraph.co.uk – Jun 3, 2002
“The Solheim Cup is one of the premier golfing events in the world. “Given the huge public and commercial interest it now generates, it is appropriate that the match is not played in the same month as the Ryder Cup,” said Richard Relton, European director for the Solheim Cup. “We will also move away from the Olympic Games and the Euro 2004 football championship,” he added. Players will continue to qualify over two years, with two sets of points at stake this season – one for the 2002 event at Interlachen Country Club in Minnesota, and the other for the 2003 competition. The top seven players in the rankings receive automatic slots, while there are five captain’s picks. Scots heading in right direction
BBC News – May 23, 2002
A young and inexperienced squad had earlier lost matches to World Cup finalists South Korea and South Africa. All along the German coach insisted that results in friendlies were not the most important thing and stressed his number one task was to find out how good young players are. However, after the win against the Hong Kong side, he admitted: “I was telling my players ‘we have to win the game’. ”

Goals from Kevin Kyle, Steven Thompson, Christian Dailly and Scot Gemmill made the result a formality against a poor team featuring four Brazilians, a Nigerian and former Dundee midfielder Gary McKeown… Well, 88 minutes because I brought him off then. ”

Young defenders Lee Wilkie and Warren Cummings, with the latter making his first appearance at half-time, also received words of praise from Vogts. Now the German is looking forward to fielding his strongest side in the final friendly before the Euro 2004 qualifiers begin, an August friendly with Denmark at Hampden Park. “Now the players can go on holiday and I will be waiting for them in August in Glasgow. “But we have 23 players here and another six or seven who are at home.

In an effort to improve CSMN transduction, we tested whether modifying promoter and viral capsid, the two important components that modulate specificity, would have a role in CSMN transduction. We chose to use eGFP expression under the CBA promoter in addition to AAV2 2 capsid proteins with site directed mutagenesis replacing tyrosine with phenolalanine (Y F).
