World Cup kicks off sports business in Asia
Times of India – Jun 21, 2002
In Latin America
the market will amount to $3 billion in 2006, up from $2. 3 billion in 2001,
while Canada’s sports market will go from $489 million in 2001 to $579 million
in 2006. Football, especially the two World Cup tournaments – the current
one in Japan and Korea and 2006 tournament in Germany – will be the key drivers
of the sports market over the next five years. “On the strength of the World
Cup, we expect gate revenues in 2002 will grow by 17. 1 per cent and TV rights
fees will increase by 13 per cent,” the Outlook says. Over the same
period, the Olympics are expected to boost rights fees in the US market.

US football comes of age
BBC News – Jun 22, 2002
For the first time, American fans started to see the fluid, disciplined game that we had so long envied in other world soccer powers. The US may have lost to Germany, but we lost to a well-respected side and gave the three-time champions a good run. There is a sense amongst American fans that the US arrived on the world soccer scene this World Cup.

Unanswered prayers
ESPN – Jun 21, 2002
team know it’s arrived at the top table? The Americans just got their hearts broken by the Germans after outplaying them. Welcome to the glorious world of international football, America. Despite the jealousy, the parody, the patronizing comments of the international experts about your talent, your understanding, and your country’s appreciation for the game, the smart money, the consensus among most journalists I’ve spoken too, is that you are here to stay. Can you make it to the upper echelon and contend for the World Cup in four or eight years time? A week’s a long time in football, years, nobody can foresee. But here are:10 Sure Things That You Guys Can Feel Good About After Your Performance In The World Cup1. The sports pages have to write about you now… George even lost my cell phone, saying sorry “it was pickpocketed. ” But I am full of hope. Young England will contend for Euro 2004, and the World Cup in 2006. It is scary how young this team is. And the next great team coming up behind them might be the United States. Best of all, though, and this is perhaps the greatest achievement of this U.

South Korea is crazy over team
USA Today – Jun 21, 2002
He does not merit it. When he arrived, he was like a little lost goat who didn’t even have the money
to buy a sandwich. “He became rich without doing anything exceptional and
then, at the World Cup, he denigrated Italian football. ”
Said Korea coach Guus Hiddink: “It’s a childish reaction. You have to think of sports, and sports means players are all playing in different
countries. ”
FIFA, the sport’s governing body, said it would not intervene
in the decision by Perugia. Though Ahn’s popularity is soaring, it doesn’t come close
to the revere the country has for Hiddink, who was imported from the Netherlands.

Italian TV may sue over Cup exit
CNN – Jun 21, 2002
The deal also included 25 matches from the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Until the defeat, games involving the Italian team were attracting up to 20 million viewers and significant advertising revenue. RAI has instructed its legal department to consider constructing a case to show FIFA was responsible for the poor quality refereeing. “(The case) would seek to have FIFA reimburse damages suffered by RAI following the exit of the Italian team from the World Cup on the basis of universally recognised refereeing errors, errors that were so blatant they could only be described as the product of serious fraud,” the statement said. But FIFA president Sepp Blatter, in an interview with Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday, said the Italians should stop being bad losers.

Eriksson looks ahead
BBC News – Jun 21, 2002
And this is because Eriksson feels England have a depth of talent that makes Euro 2004 and the World Cup in Germany in 2006 a more realistic opportunity for victory than the Japanese campaign ever was. He said: “We were very close, but not close enough. In four years, hopefully, we will have more or less the same squad and hopefully we will do better.

BBC SPORT | WORLD CUP | Spain v South Korea | Camacho hits out
BBC News – Jun 22, 2002
Egyptian Gamal Ghandour ruled out three Spanish goals, including one by Fernando Morientes in extra time, which all of Spain will believe should have stood. “I thought the referee would be fairer in a quarter-final match like this,” said Camacho after the match finished 0-0 at the end of extra time. "

We are talking about the quarter-finals of a World Cup not a friendly match played just anywhere
"

Fernando Morientes

“We fought to the end and worked so hard but we went out because South Korea were luckier than us. I am just sorry we couldn’t go any further… “We thought there was going to be more of a precaution to avoid this from happening, but it appears Fifa isn’t interested. “There are too many games ending this way. This isn’t very good for football. ”

A disappointed Morientes said afterwards that he had never seen refereeing like it before. “It could have turned the game around and we are talking about the quarter-finals of a World Cup not a friendly match played just anywhere. “Two goals disallowed – that has never been seen. ”

Korea’s last opponents Italy, who expressed their annoyance with a series of ruled-out goals during the tournament, might disagree.

) Still, they proved they are no longer the pushovers of U. teams past, sending a message to the rest of the world and leaving a calling card for 2006 and beyond. (Beckenbauer: Germany lucky to win) “We can go home with out heads held high,” U. goalkeeper Brad Friedel said, proud of the Americans’ best World Cup performance in 72 years. Stat SummaryGermany U… It was a stellar showing for an American team expected to struggle just to get out of its first-round group. Four years ago, it lost all three of its games and finished last in the 32-nation field, sparking ridicule around the world and doubts back home over whether the United States would ever be competitive in the world’s most popular sport. This World Cup started better right away for the Americans. They opened with a 3-2 win over heavily favored Portugal, then tied 1-1 against South Korea — which hasn’t lost yet. While they lost 3-1 to Poland, they backed into the second round, then stunned Mexico, which had dominated them for decades until just a few years ago. But the Americans won’t advance to the semifinals for the first time since the first World Cup in 1930. Instead, the Germans will go there for the 10th time — their first since winning their last championship in 1990.

Jordaan rejects top Fifa post
BBC News – Jun 21, 2002
Jordaan was in charge of South Africa’s bid to host the 2006 bid which they controversially lost to Germany. South Africa’s soccer chief executive Jordaan had been approached to serve Fifa, as secretary general. Jordaan has stated that he could review his options in 2004 when the announcement of the first African hosts of the World Cup will be made.

There’s this charming picture of David Seaman with his daughter on several front pages, flash up the picture, no – alright we saw it earlier on anyway. And just where England succeeded and failed is dissected everywhere, the former England Manager Bobby Robson knows the joy of doing well but failing to get through to the final only too well from his years as the custodian, the very successful custodian of England’s hopes. I’ll be talking to him after this reminder of the highs and lows of that clash with Brazil. [FILM CLIP]

But once our kids stop playing, most of us stop watching, tuning into sports that give us more scoring with a shorter attention span required. And even if the sport becomes more popular here, it won’t become a favorite of the television networks, which have trouble advertising during the two continuous-play halves. It’s the reason that the World Cup, arguably the world’s most popular sporting event, has a U. television contract ranking it behind Arena Football here in terms of dollars to the sport. Even in countries where soccer is king, such as Germany and England, the difficulty of advertising during the match itself has resulted in bankruptcy for some pay-per-view soccer broadcasters.

As Whitaker warned, “If the moral effect should be lost now that the public knows just what http://www.cheapjerseysupplyforyou.com the ‘machine’ is, why then, we will rig up a really, truly mechanical spanker to take the place of the barrel stave, and it will have some jolt to it too, on the spot where it fetches up.” (There’s a reelection slogan if ever there was one.)I catch the ball, I run for a little bit, probably get hit by the free safety, probably maybe it’s an eleven to fifteen yard gain.
