The Manchester United star, who led England through the toughest group and to the quarterfinal, believes that England is good enough to win both Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup if the same squad stays together and players such as Steven Gerrard and Gary Neville return fit to join them. “We believe that we can win Euro 2004,” Beckham was quoted as saying in the Sun. “That is next up on the agenda for us and it is something that I am convinced is well within our grasp. “There is so much talent and desire in this squad that the 2006 World Cup in Germany has to be a genuine target for us as well. I honestly felt that we would have won the World Cup in Japan if we had managed to get past Brazil in our quarterfinal. “That wasn't to be but there's always a next time… The Manchester United star, who led England through the toughest group and to the quarterfinal, believes that England is good enough to win both Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup if the same squad stays together and players such as Steven Gerrard and Gary Neville return fit to join them. And who can say that we won't succeed in Portugal and Germany where we failed in Japan.

Dutch take S. Korea to their hearts
CNN – Jun 25, 2002
The Dutch, famed in the 1970s and 80s for the artistry and pace of their “Total Football,” will cheer on Guus Hiddink’s “Red Devils” when they take on a German team derided by some Dutch soccer commentators as dull, predictable and uninspiring. “The Netherlands has adopted Hiddink’s 11. Who would not wish to believe that South Korea can destroy Germany’s anti-football tomorrow?” the Algemeen Dagblad daily newspaper said on Monday. With Dutch dreams of World Cup glory on hold for another four years after their side failed to qualify for the tournament for the first time since 1986, the country has been enthused and bemused in equal measure by Hiddink’s success… The Dutch, European champions in 1988 and World Cup finalists in Germany in 1974 and Argentina in 1978, failed to qualify this time, finishing behind Portugal and Ireland. They are hoping to rebuild under new coach Dick Advocaat for Euro 2004 in Portugal. Many Dutch soccer experts have been scathing in their criticism of traditional arch-rivals Germany and full of praise for South Korea’s go-getting style ahead of Tuesday’s semi-final in Seoul. Former European Footballer of the Year Johan Cruyff, who shone for Ajax Amsterdam and the Netherlands in the 1960s and 70s, said too many teams in the tournament had played football which was pragmatic but lacked creativity. Top-selling Dutch daily De Telegraaf threw its weight behind Hiddink on Monday, praising him for encouraging South Korea to play attractive football. “Hiddink’s South Korea has shown an offensive face which has worldwide admiration,” the paper said.

Eriksson ponders tough Turkey
Irish Independent – Jun 24, 2002
For all the bullish talk about winning in 2004, England first must overcome opponents who have shown themselves capable of overturning expectations by reaching the last four. There is trepidation when any team from England confronts one from Turkey but, aside from familiar concerns over hooliganism, Sven-Goran Eriksson will know now that the draw for the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign was not quite as favourable as he might have believed when he left Oporto in January. The first issue that he must resolve is his choice of goalkeeper and, if David Seaman does not announce his retirement, Eriksson should do it for him. Pushed on the matter before he flew home on Saturday, the England head coach had little choice other than to support Seaman. Sympathetic then, he should be harsh now if Seaman does indicate that he is willing to stay on, because the goalkeeper will be 39 in September. Arsenal have offered him a one-year contract but they have doubts as to his longevity and, if he is not going to retain his club place until 2004, it makes sense to jettison him now rather than part-way through the campaign.

Inquiry not a witch-hunt

Some quarters of the media have indicated that heads will roll once the findings are made public and that General Secretary Brendan Menton could be in the line of fire, but Honorary Treasurer John Delaney says this will not be the case:
“Some people are linking the review to people going and being made scapegoats, but that is not its purpose. “The review is to ensure we have the administrative structures in place to cope with Ireland qualifying for Euro 2004 or the next World Cup in 2006. At the end of report, we will be looking at the proposals and we will begin implementing them. There will be no scapegoats. ”
Menton added: “I?ve been quoted before in saying I think an investigation is unnecessary and I still think it is, because I think the organisation was very good. Week One in Saipan was a low-key, low-staff affair – a crisis happened and we weren?t staffed to meet it.

Beckenbauer in blast at England
Edinburgh Evening News – Jun 25, 2002
“Their frontman, Emile Heskey, was the best English defender. He was always standing 18 metres from his own goalkeeper. “I said: ‘Is this the same England that used to attack so much?’ “Even when they were 2-1 behind against Brazil they did not do it. It would not be my way to be kicked out the tournament like that. They have ignored their footballing culture. It is terrible to see England play football like that. ” David Beckham, meanwhile, has joined Rio Ferdinand in voicing his belief that England can build on their good work at this year’s World Cup by winning some silverware in the near future… It is terrible to see England play football like that. ” David Beckham, meanwhile, has joined Rio Ferdinand in voicing his belief that England can build on their good work at this year’s World Cup by winning some silverware in the near future. NEW CHALLENGES But former European Footballer of the Year Platini declined to be drawn into the debate, even though his former team mates Jacques Santini and Alain Giresse are favourites for the job. Asked what the France manager's mission would be, Platini told Le Parisien: “To rebuild. New challenges will come quickly with the Euro 2004 and 2006 World Cup qualifiers. ” “But I'm not entitled to make an announcement (on who the national team manager should be). President Simonet will announce his decision on July 5 or before if he wants to. “I told him about my choice last week and he said it was an excellent idea. Whether he will follow my advice I don't know.

The Observer – Jun 23, 2002
Everybody counted themselves in: Mick McCarthyists, Roy Keanites, the lot. South Korea and Japan 2002 will be remembered by the Irish as a tournament that had bitter edges around the overall sweetness. The most enduring factor, though, has to be that after eight years in the big tournament wilderness, the nation’s footballcan feel ambitious again… Looking ahead towards the European championship, they find themselves in the unfamiliar position of being group favourites. Russia, who pose the greatest threat, were mundane bordering on anonymous at the World Cup, and the might of Switzerland, Georgia and Albania complete the line-up. Not that McCarthy would dare to be overconfident. No doubt there will be a few choice words to that effect to refocus the minds of the younger members of the group. While Robbie Keane, Duff and Finnan so thrillingly came of age during the World Cup, extra responsibility is coming their way fast. Now that Quinn and Steve Staunton have taken their final bow, and with Roy Keane likely to remain in exile as long as the current regime are in charge, Ireland must move on without three influential forces who had formed the spine of the team during the difficult transformation from one blossoming era to the next. None of them is easily replaced.
