Brazil to gain from shake-up
BBC News – Jul 22, 2002
Brazil struggled mightily to book their place in the World Cups of 1994 and 2002. And on both occasions then proved themselves the best side in the tournament. If qualification has become more difficult than the World Cup, then this is in part due to the nature of contemporary South American football. The game has spread north from its original southern strongholds of Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil. Colombia are the current champions of the Copa America tournament. Ecuador have become a force, and now Venezuela have made the breakthrough there is no longer a match in South America where the away team have a guaranteed three points. Chile finished bottom of the table in the 2002 qualifiers, but on the way they beat Brazil 3-0.

But if they’re sitting on the bench then that could end up being a minus for us,” he said. Zico, who had initially wanted only a coordinating role until he was persuaded to become coach by Japan Football Association (JFA) president Saburo Kawabuchi, said his main goal was to secure qualification for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. “It was a terrific achievement to reach the second round of the World Cup but now the task I have is to get Japan to the finals in 2006 and to make an impact there too,” said Zico. “Japan have proved they are the top team in Asia, along with South Korea. But I want to help Japan get to the very top. It will be difficult but I believe I am up to the challenge. ” Related informationStories.

Insolvency specialists appointed to manage the company after it collapsed in April told Reuters they want to maximize the value of the rights and would make a decision within a week. KirchMedia filed for insolvency after it failed to repay its creditors billions in euros in outstanding loans, partly linked to an ambitious spending spree for film and sports rights. The new KirchMedia management also signaled a possible shake-up of the rights to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Only Kirch’s pay TV operation Premiere carried all matches from this year’s tournament in South Korea and Japan live. Board member Heinz-Joachim Ziems said KirchMedia was talking about the rights with its own free-to-air channels and Bertelsmann’s RTL, but not public broadcasters ARD and ZDF. He added that he expected a double-digit margin on the rights. Negotiations on the World Cup are due to close by the end of October and Ziems said he expected over half of the 64 matches to be broadcast live on German free-to-air television, alongside pay-TV but added that free TV may carry the whole tournament.

In Howard, you have one of the most difficult cuts from Arena’s final World Cup roster, and a bona fide National Team future star for the next several years. In fact, Arena restated on Wednesday that the reason he didn’t take him to the Far East in June was because he felt it was important for a 23-year-old goalkeeper to play for six weeks day-in and day-out rather than sit on a bench behind Brad Friedel and Kasey Keller. He also said that the MetroStars’ goalkeeper would surely be in the mix for the 2006 World Cup. “If I remain in this capacity (as head coach),” said Arena, who still hasn’t been re-signed by the U. Soccer Federation beyond this year, “I’m certain he’ll be called up for the National Team. While Howard represents the young guns on the MLS starting 11 along with 23-year-old Carlos Bocanegra, 24-year-old Dema Kovalenko, 22-year-old Taylor Twellman and 24-year-old Ryan Suarez looking to impress Arena in such a game, Petke, 26, is the poster boy for those who have had success in MLS without getting much of chance at the National Team level.

Souness extends Blackburn stay
BBC News – Jul 22, 2002
“We have made great strides to re-establish Blackburn Rovers as a Premiership
club and the aim is for that to continue,” added Rovers chief executive John Williams. “To achieve our goals we need good management on and off the field, prudent
financial planning and a strategy that encourages growth in our fan base. “The football manager is key in all areas and we believe we have the right
man in place. “We have an excellent working relationship and when we sat down with Graeme
to discuss a new extended contract it was clear that both parties wanted it to
happen. “But signing the contract is the easy part, the main thing is to continue to
work in harness to make sure we see it through and deliver what is right for
Blackburn Rovers. “There will be ups and downs, probably may of both, but in years to come we
hope that people will look back at the `Souness era’ as one of the most
successful spells in the club’s history. ”

“I’ve told Matty it’s a financial decision rather than a football decision,” said Adams. Graeme Souness yesterday agreed a new four-year contract with Blackburn Rovers, then insisted it would take “£20 million-plus” for him to even consider selling winger Damien Duff. The former Rangers and Liverpool manager is now under contract until June 2006. Souness said: “Coming to Rovers has proved an excellent move for me and I have enjoyed every minute. This is a first-class club with a really bright future and the place I want to be… I had no hesitation in agreeing to sign a new contract. “Souness guided Rovers to promotion from Division One in his first full season and followed it up with a Worthington Cup triumph last term to earn the club a route back into Europe.
