And, on Sunday, Eriksson was in the stands as Seaman made another blunder, allowing in a free kick by Gianfranco Zola in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea. “I spoke to David Seaman and told him that as it’s a friendly game he can stay at home and we’re going to look at other goalkeepers,” Eriksson said. “But he’s not out because of his age — absolutely not. ” Eriksson said he still expected to pick Seaman for England’s Euro 2004 qualifiers. Leeds stars Bowyer and Woodgate were cleared last December in a high-profile trial on charges of assaulting a 19-year-old Asian student in a street fight in downtown Leeds. Both players admitted being drunk but denied attacking Sarfraj Najeib. Woodgate was ordered to serve 120 hours community service after being found guilty of affray, or fighting.

Linke wanted to quit the national team after the World Cup but Voeller said he needed him because several other defenders were injured. 7 Lithuania match in Kaunas kicks off Germany’s Euro 2004 qualifying campaign. Voeller, who had invited several youngsters for the Bulgaria match, this time went back to the tested players, most of whom were on the team that lost the World Cup final 2-0 to Brazil. In its first match after the World Cup final, Germany struggled to a 2-2 draw against Bulgaria. None of the youngsters who had traveled to Bulgaria were on Thursday’s list, not even Hertha Berlin’s Arne Friedrich — the one newcomer that left a good impression. Friedrich, a 23-year-defender, had been nominated after just one Bundesliga match — the fastest a player has been named to the national team in German history… Forwards: Gerald Asamoah (Schalke), Carsten Jancker (Udinese Calcio), Miroslav Klose (FC Kaiserslautern), Oliver Neuville (Bayer Leverkusen), Alexander Zickler (Bayern Munich). Savage brimming with confidence
BBC News – Sep 1, 2002
The Birmingham City midfielder missed the recent friendly in Croatia, and suspension kept him out of the first two Premiership matches of the season. Manager Mark Hughes was delighted with the performances of midfield pair Andy Johnson and Carl Robinson in the 1-1 draw against the Croatians. But Savage fully expects to be given the nod to get back in the thick of things in the Welsh midfield in Helsinki for the Euro 2004 qualifier. “I know that is Mark Hughes’ decision and the lads who were in Croatia played very well but you have got to pick your best team for Finland and I believe I figure in that best team… “I know that is Mark Hughes’ decision and the lads who were in Croatia played very well but you have got to pick your best team for Finland and I believe I figure in that best team. ”

He added: “It was agony not being involved early on for Birmingham, so when I did get in for the last couple of games I was determined to do my best and I really enjoyed the games. “Now I can’t wait for the Wales game. My season has only really started now and the more games the better. “I’m looking forward to it and if I can play as well as I did at Everton in
my first game of the season, I know I will be contributing to the Wales
cause. ”

The future involvement of another Birmingham City employee is not as clear cut.

Litmanen surprised at speed of move
rte.ie – Sep 2, 2002
“On Thursday evening and Friday the papers were finalised just before the ending of the transfer period. He told STT: “Everything happened so quickly. I have not yet fully grasped that I am not a Liverpool player any more and have returned to Ajax. My thoughts are fully now on Finland’s upcoming Euro 2004 qualifier against Wales. “Filed by Sin?ad Kissane.

Eriksson demystified
The Observer – Sep 1, 2002
Lovejoy could hardly have ignored them, after all, and neatly quotes Eriksson’s agent, Athole Still, resignedly admitting that his client ‘can’t resist a bird’. The whole book is a perceptive and thorough analysis of the man and his style and succeeds in shedding light. Still’s most interesting revelations are that he suspects Eriksson might be ready for a return to club management after Euro 2004 – two years before his contract ends – and that he is sure he will succeed Ferguson at Manchester United. Eriksson might even go before that, adds Still, if he feels the coverage of his non-footballing life becomes intolerable. So far there seems little sign, though. As Eriksson briefed Sunday newspaper journalists at the Football Association on Friday – an in-depth hour suggesting he was responding to criticism for a hurried, stone-faced exit from Japan – he smiled anew that beatific smile at the end of each sentence, even eschewed the straight bat for strokes of greater flourish. ‘No, my attitude to the job has not changed,’ he insisted… As Eriksson briefed Sunday newspaper journalists at the Football Association on Friday – an in-depth hour suggesting he was responding to criticism for a hurried, stone-faced exit from Japan – he smiled anew that beatific smile at the end of each sentence, even eschewed the straight bat for strokes of greater flourish. ‘No, my attitude to the job has not changed,’ he insisted. ‘You read a lot of things but almost everything I read is not true. You have to stand and accept it, laugh at it, otherwise you have to pack your case and go home. If I have enough one day I will tell you. ‘ For the record: the fortuneteller is true. ‘My future was good.

England prepare to host Sunday games
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 28, 2002
England are due to receive France, Scotland and Italy. A draft schedule already circulating has England’s match against Italy pencilled in for Sunday, March 9. Twickenham has never before staged a Sunday fixture in the championship although it has hosted the Barbarians on that day over the last few seasons… Whatever we as a union might feel, we will have to abide by the decision of the Six Nations. “That decision is expected within the next few days. England are the only one of the six countries not to have had at least one Sunday fixture, primarily because for the last five years they have had a separate broadcasting deal for matches at Twickenham with BSkyB. However, they have played away from home in the championship on Sundays – against Wales at Wembley in 1999, Scotland the following year and Italy last season. The BBC are also pressing for 5. 30pm Saturday kick-offs for certain games. Pat Young, BBC’s Head of Programming, said in a recent Rugby World magazine article: “I know some travelling fans regard Sunday rugby as a chore but the complaints from those fans inconvenienced have to be measured against the millions being able to watch the match on television.

Savage stands by Bowen
BBC News – Aug 29, 2002
“At the end of the day Birmingham City is his employer and when there is a double-header of international matches with Wales, then he’ll be away from the club for 10 days. “It’s nothing to do with me but I think Birmingham City is very important to both of them (Bowen and Bruce) and Premiership survival is the utmost – two jobs are difficult to do. ”
