Improve or I quit, says Lambert
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 26, 2002
But if we lose the first two games, and qualification is not possible then I’ll be finished. That was the agreement with the manager. “If we’ve no chance to qualify then I’ve gave it my best and the manager knows that. It wasn’t for my benefit that I came back, it was for the benefit of the youngsters… Vogts said: “We spoke about the differences between Scottish football and the national team, what’s happening with youth policy and training facilities. “We have to have more training facilities. When we look towards the Euro 2008 bid as well, we need more training facilities for the teams who come to play in Scotland. You can’t have managers taking players in cars to the training area, then it starts raining and they have to go back to the dressing room. It’s not possible and we have to change that.

Keane comments ‘will not harm Euro bid’
BBC News – Aug 22, 2002
“His criticism of the FAI is an internal matter” he told BBC Sport Online. “I don’t think Uefa will be waiting for a bulletin from Roy Keane before deciding if Scotland-Ireland should host 2008. ”

Keane’s picture continues to have a prominent place in the glossy bid document while his manager Sir Alex Ferguson has both backed his captain and agreed to be an ambassador for the bid. Byrne does not view this as a conflict of interest… “I don’t think Uefa will be waiting for a bulletin from Roy Keane before deciding if Scotland-Ireland should host 2008. ”

Keane’s picture continues to have a prominent place in the glossy bid document while his manager Sir Alex Ferguson has both backed his captain and agreed to be an ambassador for the bid. Byrne does not view this as a conflict of interest. “Roy will always be a major figure in Irish football and we have no plans to change that but some of his motives in the book have to be questioned,” Byrne said. ”

Another issue for the FAI is to try and persaude the Gaelic Athletic Assocation to allow Croke Park to become a venue for 2008.

Interview: Denis MacShane
Guardian Unlimited – Aug 30, 2002
Bosnia already has a government and the international community headed by Paddy Ashdown – who’s there representing the UN, not Britain – is involved. I’m encouraged by the fact that Bosnia Herzegovina and Croatia are putting in a joint bid to host Euro 2008 – the fact that two countries are thinking about the future in those symbolic terms is hopeful… I think his ambition would be to be the last international community high representative in Bosnia and at times you actually have to take tough decisions in order to be able to return complete power and authority to locally elected representatives. JG: Critics of international action have seen it as a process that creates de facto EU colonies? What do you say to that charge?DM: It is a question that is always at the forefront of my mind and I always tell officials here that I would not hope my successor in 10 years’ time – unless I’m lucky enough to still hold the job – that we can wind down the extraordinarily detailed attention that we pay to the Balkans as it becomes a normal part of Europe. The alternative is the policy we had in the early 1990s which was not to get involved, when we had the hyperrealist policy of the Conservative government. JG: What is Kosovo’s future? Legally it is part of Serbia. DM: Legally it is under UN administration. The issue of final settlement in Kosovo is 90% in the hands of Kosovans themselves. We will stay there – the international community, not Britain – until such time as everybody who has land there is living back in their own homes with full respect for their rights and identity.

Keane criticisms will not affect Euro bid
Irish Independent – Aug 22, 2002
Keane has been scathing about the organisation behind the Republic of Ireland national team and this played a part in the Football Association of Ireland commissioning an independent review into the World Cup. However, organisers of the joint bid are confident this does not, by implication, call into question the FAI’s ability to work with their Scottish counterparts to organise a tournament. Scotland and Ireland’s bid is understood to have two main rivals another joint campaign from Austria and Switzerland, as well as a Nordic submission from four Scandinavian countries. Greece and Turkey, Russia, Bosnia and Hungary have also thrown their hats into the ring, with UEFA’s executive committee making their final decision in December… Keane has been scathing about the organisation behind the Republic of Ireland national team and this played a part in the Football Association of Ireland commissioning an independent review into the World Cup. DAVID BECKHAM has signed a multi-million pound deal to publish his “first real autobiography,” it was announced yesterday. The England and Manchester United midfield player promises to reveal details of his career and private life “in my own words for the first time,” up to the end of the current season.

Did your team impress?
BBC News – Aug 21, 2002
These must be given time to produce the talent. Most of all the clubs must support Vogts by giving the youngsters first team football. However, it’s an old chestnut but it could be argued that the Scottish Premier League format does not allow breathing space for clubs to bring in young talent, they’re either challenging for European places of fighting relegation. It needs to change. James Mundy,
Scotland

"

Why didn’t Mick McCarthy have John O’Shea on the team?

"

Niamh,
Ireland

Berti seems to be getting more and more frustrated with this Scottish team, and who can blame him? Last night’s performance was woeful. We lack quality in just about every position on the field – how on earth is Kyle an international class striker? He can’t even get a game for Boro. The only times we looked to have any quality about us was when either Ferguson or Lambert had the ball – the rest of the time forget it… The only times we looked to have any quality about us was when either Ferguson or Lambert had the ball – the rest of the time forget it. On recent evidence it’s going to be a long hard road back for us – we thoroughly deserve our Fifa ranking of 60th in the world. Our best chance of getting to a tournament is going to be by landing Euro 2008. Don Massie,
Scotland

Why didn’t Mick McCarthy have John O’Shea on the team, even as a sub? Is he totally against all Man Utd Irish players? O’Shea has improved greatly in one year and should be a member of the Irish squad. Well done to the Irish lads though – good performance. Niamh,
Ireland

I think that Ireland have some of the best young talent in English football today, and we do not need Roy Keane, we have great players in midfield such as Colin Healy and Matt Holland, not to mention a great forward line up. I think Ireland can go a long way if and when they qualify for the 2004 Euro Championships.

Vogts blasts Scots’ mentality
BBC News – Aug 21, 2002
And the German admitted he has a battle on his hands to change his adopted nation’s defensive mentality after they lost 1-0 to Denmark at Hampden Park. The Danes went into the game fresh from a reasonable showing in the World Cup that lifted them to 12th in the world rankings, 48 places above Scotland. But Vogts was not consoled by the narrow scoreline after a performance that justified the gap in the standings of the two nations. “I am very disappointed with the game,” he said… However, Vogts insisted that he could improve Scotland’s fortunes during the forthcoming Euro 2008 campaign. “This was the first match that I have played my best team and we will be one week together before playing against the Faroes, which will help,” he said. Vogts could only take three positive points from the performance.

Champions League will change
Telegraph.co.uk – Aug 26, 2002
Aigner said: “Some may protest that UEFA should have waited until the Forum in Monaco before taking a decision regarding the most prestigious club competition. “But UEFA have widely consulted all the parties concerned, including the clubs, for some time and we recognised there was a variety of views. “We therefore knew our decision would not be met with unanimous approval but we were sure of the wisdom of it. “As guardian of the overall interests of European football, UEFA hope that clubs will understand that the general interests and longer term strategy have to come before short-term concerns where important decisions are being made. “The Champions League and UEFA Cup – for which the first-round draws are to be held on Thursday and Friday respectively – will dominate a series of meetings planned for this week. After today’s meeting of the Professional Football Committee (comprising the English, German, French, Spanish and Italian leagues), tomorrow will see the 11-club board (including representatives of Manchester United) of the European Club Forum hold their inaugural meeting. On Thursday, UEFA’s club competitions committee will meet, and on Friday, the G14, including Manchester United and Liverpool, will have their congress… Meanwhile, the Club Forum, with all 102 members, meets before the Super Cup game between Real Madrid and Feyenoord. G14 are likely to put pressure on UEFA to revert to the existing format in the Champions League, but Aigner and the executive committee seem in no mood to back down. The UEFA Cup, which has twice as many participants as the Champions League, will have an initial group stage but a different format.

McLeish resignation statement
BBC News – Sep 5, 2002
I will not stand in the forthcoming Scottish Parliamentary elections. I have, of course, informed my local party. Successively in local government, at Westminster and in the Scottish Parliament, I worked for the people I knew and grew up with and did my best to serve them. Public service has been my life. I first became a councillor in Kirkcaldy District in 1974, then led Fife Regional Council from 1982 to 1987… ‘Full responsibility’

I believe that my record of achievement – free personal care for older Scots; the new deal for teachers; the reform of the quango state and much else – speaks for itself. Over the course of my 12 months in Scotland’s highest elected post, devolved government established itself more securely than ever, with a new sense of purpose, aspiration and self-belief. Scotland’s international profile was raised by our work towards Euro 2008; by securing the hosting of the Ryder Cup; developing the USA’s Tartan Day; by the new ferry link to Europe and by serious policy thinking on Scotland’s role within the UK, within Europe and then in the wider world. I was privileged to serve the people of Scotland in the role of first minister and was deeply saddened when I had to step aside. Over the months since then I and my family have endured much: intrusions on our privacy; persistent insinuations about matters which have been dealt with; and continuing unacceptable pressures.

Loyal IRFU get kick in solar plexus
Irish Independent – Sep 11, 2002
Chief Executive Philip Browne described the shattering news as “very disappointing especially as the IRFU have supported the concept of a national stadium from the outset. We will need to seek more clarity on the issue of private funding. ” The IRFU for all of its considerable assets and supposed wealth does not possess the wherewithal to raise anything remotely close to the €200m likely to be required to build or revamp a national rugby stadium appropriate to the needs of the 21st century. Others I spoke to were much less diplomatic, saying that the national stadium, Bertie’s pipedream, was now a castle in the air. So whither the IRFU and Lansdowne Road ? Sold up the Liffey without a paddle, the only feasible solution in the immediate short term is to stick Lansdowne together again with plasticene and improvise as we go on. Corporate boxes a la Croker are I understand already in the pipeline but there is so much more to be done. As a traditionalist I long for the redevelopment of this old stadium… But the real losers of course are in 80 Merrion Square because at least rugby has a 50,000 capacity stadium to redevelop. Perhaps the time is ripe for Brendan Menton, Philip Browne and everyone in both organisations left out on a limb by this decision to get together and plot a combined and definitive way forward. As for Euro 2008, forget about it. For Ireland’s bid to succeed we must have at least two stadia and as of now we have none. Even if Croke Park opens it doors, there isn’t a hope of Lansdowne agreeing to a 30,000 all seater stadium just to cater for the needs of this bid. Right now we are left with an unmitigated Irish sporting disaster and more is the pity because knowing this Taoiseach and his passion for sport – whatever shape the ball – as I do, this hurts him over and above the political fallout which may well be considerable.

Gagging order over secret tape
BBC News – Aug 20, 2002
“Councillor Maitland was suspended from the Labour Party and he was encouraged to resign. ”

Mr Maitland is unavailable for comment on his role. However, he has denied any wrongdoing – and a council inquiry has found that he did not act illegally. The Dons’ ?30m stadium plans are part of Scotland’s bid with Ireland to host the Euro 2008 championships.
