Bertie Bowl fiasco will hit bid for Euro 2008
The Observer – Sep 15, 2002
It’s out of our hands now. ‘ At the SFA’s Hampden Park headquarters on Friday, Taylor admitted the Celtic bid was not the front-runner in the race to secure Euro 2008. ‘We are definitely not favourites to host the championships. There are two or three very good bids and I would not speculate on who the favourites are, but it is not Scotland and Ireland. ‘ Another bi-national bid, from Austria and Switzerland, has been widely tipped as the most likely winner and a Nordic option also on the table is understood to have impressed Uefa. But Taylor’s comments are a far cry from the optimistic noises being made a few weeks ago when Glasgow was basking in the glory of hosting a successful Champions’ League final and Austrian fans were exhibiting a penchant for beating one another up. In July, the vice-president of world football’s governing body Fifa, Scotsman David Will, suggested Scotland and Ireland were edging ahead.

Scotland hit all-time low
Edinburgh Evening News – Sep 18, 2002
The Scots dropped three places as a result of the draw in the Toftir Stadium, Vogts’ first competitive match as Scotland coach, although he had lost all five inter-national games since taking charge of the national side in March. The Faroes gained four places to move up to 119th while under-pressure Vogts takes his side to Iceland next month in search of that elusive first win. Iceland, 54th in the rankings, were not in action when the Scots kicked off their Euro 2004 qualification campaign. World Cup winners Brazil maintained their place at the top of the FIFA rankings, although they have a trio of European nations on their tails, deposed champions France, Spain and Germany, while Argentina have dropped from second to fifth. England dropped two places after playing only one match – the 1-1 friendly draw with Portugal – in the last month, falling to ninth and overtaken by Turkey and the USA. The Republic of Ireland, beaten 4-2 by Russia in their opening Euro 2004 qualifying game, drop one place to 14th while Wales have leapt 13 places in one month – mainly thanks to their 2-0 Euro 2004 qualifier win in Finland. Northern Ireland are down eight places in 99th place, just below Malawi and Latvia.

Israel want to play at Tottenham
Telegraph.co.uk – Sep 23, 2002
Joe Dagan, the head of foreign relations at the Israel Football Association, made a formal request by fax yesterday to Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman. He also held informal discussions with David Davies, the Football Association’s executive director. “We want to know what expense would be involved, especially given the cost of flying a team to England,” Dagan said last night before leaving for a pre-arranged trip to London… But UEFA are understood to believe this is not viable given the recent level of violence in the region and the potential danger to teams playing in Israel. Manchester United will play their Champions League away tie against Maccabi Haifa in Cyprus. If UEFA maintain their ban on Israel hosting matches, the country’s football administrators are trying to find another location. Israel have until tonight to come up with alternative venues for their home games and London is understood to be the first choice. The other options are Ukraine and Bulgaria.

Advocaat to leave Rangers
BBC News – Sep 18, 2002
The Dutchman took over the reins of his national side for the second time
earlier this year in a job-share with the KNVB, but will return to Holland on a full-time basis. The Dutch failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup finals and Advocaat has been charged with getting them to Euro 2004. Advocaat stepped aside as club manager at Ibrox in December to allow Alex McLeish to take over the running of first team matters. McLeish has already won the Scottish and CIS Insurance Cups and took Rangers
to the top of the SPL for the first time in 25 months last week. Ibrox honorary chairman David Murray took time to praise Advocaat’s work in his time in Glasgow… Ibrox honorary chairman David Murray took time to praise Advocaat’s work in his time in Glasgow. “His determination in creating training and youth development facilities benefits our club and has created a solid foundation for the future. “I thank him for his contribution. ”

Advocaat, who was due to step down at the end of the season, arrived at Ibrox in the summer of 1998 after a successful spell with PSV Eindhoven and a previous stint with the Dutch national side. Rangers won the domestic Treble in Advocaat’s first season and the Premier League and Scottish Cup double the following term.

Delaney boosts Wales
BBC News – Sep 23, 2002
The Aston Villa defender has been sidelined for the last three matches – including Sunday’s 3-2 win over Everton – with a mystery leg problem. But Delaney is now back in training and confident he will be fit to face the Italians as Wales look to step up their bid to reach the Euro 2004 finals after their excellent 2-0 success in Finland. “Mark Hughes rang me up the other day and checked how I was and I said I would be ready for Italy,” Delaney said… “I’ve had all the tests. I’ve had a bone scan and an MRI scan to check if there’s any damage and the good news is that there isn’t any. “We’re still not sure exactly what the problem is. We’re trying to eliminate a few things and try to see exactly where the pain is coming from. “In the meantime, I’m just doing some strength work, trying to build up the calf muscles and hopefully it won’t flare up again in a few weeks.

Tbilisi: Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze said on Monday he was certain his country?s Euro 2004 qualifier against Russia would go ahead without any problems despite tension between the two former Soviet states. ?The match will be played in a normal, calm atmosphere,? Shevardnadze told a news conference. Russian fears about the October 12 match were groundless, he said, as Georgia had considerable experience in staging such events. Poland proud to welcome coaches
uefa.comUEFA.com – Sep 20, 2002
The Polish capital hosts the fifth UEFA Conference for European National Coaches, which will be attended by national team coaches from UEFA’s 52 national associations, as well as other dignitaries from football’s technical sector. Tradition on the calendarThe event has become a tradition on the UEFA calendar after every major football tournament. Current developmentsMichal Listkiewicz, a former international referee, has been the president of the Polish Football Federation (PZPN) since 1999. In this interview, he tells uefa. com about Poland’s pride in hosting this major event, as well as Polish football’s current development… Our dream is to organise [UEFA] European Championships in the youth categories, and we have applied to do this. The conference in Warsaw next week is also a great honour for our coaches. It is obvious that Polish coaches are not as well known in Europe as their German or Italian colleagues, but we have produced glorious names in the past, such as Kazimierz Gorski and Antoni Piechniczek. We have many talented coaches in Poland. They gain their knowledge at a special coaches’ academy, founded by former national team coach Ryszard Kulesza. We hope that our past footballers can prove their abilities within clubs after finishing this academy, and around one hundred of them have already graduated. This conference is also recognition of the work undertaken by Piotr Maranda, a member of UEFA’s Technical Development Committee.
