Culture & Lifestyle | 21.10.2002 Work Begins on Munich’s New…
Deutsche Welle – Oct 21, 2002
Work on the stadium is expected to be completed by April 30th 2005, in readiness for the 2006 World Cup. But as well as playing host to this championship, the new 66,000-seater arena will see regular Bundesliga action. It will become the home stadium for Munich’s two top league sides, arch rivals Bayern and TSV 1860 München. Currently, both teams play their home games at the ageing Olympicstadion. Despite their rivalry, both clubs have been involved from the start of the project and were part of the selection team that chose the design by Alpine Bau Deutschland, in association with Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, from a list of competition entrants.

Is the Ivory Coast safe?
BBC News – Oct 18, 2002
As a result, the tournament was abandoned, which cannot happen in 2006, as the African Nations Cup doubles as a World Cup qualifier that year. The Ivorian Football Federation insists the 2006 Nations Cup is still far away and the country will have a calm political atmosphere by the time they host the rest of the continent. Would you want your country to send its players to the Ivory Coast?

I don’t see how Africans can be oblivious to the instability in that country. The Ivorian government needs to shape up and treat all its citizens as equals, so that peace and stability can be restored in that country. It is only then that they can claim the moral base to enter the race to host the Cup of Nations… As an Ivorian citizen, I will not advise any country to send a team here. Since our president has chosen war, our problems have just begun. Maiga,
Ivory Coast

How can we be optimistic about a calm atmosphere in the near future when Ivorian officials have made no progress in making peace with the rebels? It annoys me that the Ivorian Football Federation can be nurturing hopes of hosting the Nations Cup. Even if things are resolved now, there is absolutely no guarantee that uprisings will not happen in the future. Just take a look at the history of conflicts
in Africa. James Kanu,
Sierra Leone

Ivory Coast should be disqualified from the race to host CAN 2006, based on the instability in the country.

Soccer: Still Waiting for That Winning Kick
BusinessWeek – Oct 21, 2002
has signed on to become a new MLS sponsor. “We could have won the World Cup, and it wouldn’t have been a panacea,” says MLS Executive Vice-President Mark Noonan. But with a TV deal through the 2006 World Cup, a soccer stadium under way in Los Angeles, and an improving bottom line–50% better than last year–the tide is turning, officials contend. WUSA, for its part, says revenues jumped 43% from 2001, largely because of three new sponsors: Maytag, Coke, and McDonald’s. But current MLS and WUSA sponsors–all of whom say publicly they are satisfied with their pro soccer involvement–are proceeding with caution. They include Gillette, American Honda, Coke, and Anheuser-Busch. With both leagues staring at several more years of red ink, how long can they absorb losses before backers lose faith and bail out? Under MLS’s feeble TV contract, it gets no rights fees up front and is responsible for selling its own ads.

Who should take Seaman’s shirt?
BBC News – Oct 18, 2002
Michael Gomes,

If Chris Kirkland was playing regular first team football I think he would be the natural choice but as that ain’t the case Paul Robinson should be given a fair chance. I don’t think David James would be reliable enough in an England shirt. Ryan Curran,
Ireland
David Seaman should have retired from international football following his huge error against Brazil in the World Cup. Repeating the error again on Wednesday night proves that he is ‘past it’. Bring on Paul Robinson! Ian Steel, UK

I think Seaman should quit. But one must applaud his service. I wouldn’t pick James at all – he is absolutely useless.

Klinsmann says England should call Sheringham
SI.com – Oct 16, 2002
Klinsmann, who won the World Cup with Germany in 1990, saidon Wednesday: “I spent 90 minutes on the training ground withTeddy and he looks like he is 21 again. “I would expect to see him in Portugal 2004 and would loveto see him in the World Cup in Germany in 2006. Sheringham said a month ago he still had hopes of adding tohis 51 England caps. He made four appearances as a substitute atthe World Cup this year but has not featured since. Klinsmann said: “Teddy is a special player, unlike any otherof his generation. He could fit into any team on the continentor play at the top in Italy because of his style and certainly Ican see him playing at the highest level for a few more years.

Commissioner excited about MLS present, future
SI.com – Oct 18, 2002
“We’re still on the first two rungs of a six-story ladder,” Garber said. “But we’ve got things to be pleased about. “After the World Cup, we picked up two or three more sponsors, which would not have happened otherwise, but that wasn’t why wedid it. We did not look at that as a revenue stream. “We lookedat is a way to sell the sport, and what we got out of it,immediately, was that we showed ESPN that the sport had a realvalue for the company. Strategically, that was huge. This year has been one of the few sweet ones for Garber, who hasbeen buffeted since he took the office… ” But what Garber knows he and MLS need most is time. “Consistency brings results,” he said. “Look at the ArenaFootball League — they’ve been around 10, 20 years now and theirfranchises are starting to have some value. We need that sameconsistency. Now, we’re nowhere near a major league. Time, sadly, has always been MLS’ enemy, it seems. While MLShas been guaranteed funding through 2006, the increasinglyunsteady fiscal climate is creating unforeseen problems.

Former Perth sports star to coach Iraqi soccer
abc.net.au – Oct 21, 2002
In fact, I’ve already been tricked by a photograph. MARK TAMHANE: The photograph in question showed a smiling Berndt Stange in front a portrait of Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein. Mr Stange says he’s yet to meet the dictator, or for that matter Saddam’s sadistic son, Uday, the head of the Iraqi Football Association. Until he was left a paraplegic following a 1996 assassination attempt, Uday reportedly took a “hands on” approach to his post, personally beating up players who didn’t perform on the field. Stange says his only aim is to try to get Iraq to qualify for the Soccer World Cup in 2006. MARK TAMHANE: Controversy is no stranger to Berndt Stange. After reunification, it was revealed the man who was the former East German national coach for five years had also been an informant for the Stasi, the notorious East German secret police.

Churchill Downs Breeders’ Cup Moved to 2006
BloodHorse – Oct 18, 2002
The Louisville track, which was to hold the event in 2005, is now expected to be host to the event in 2006. Belmont Park was named as the likely host in 2005. Nigerian league gets cash boost

5 million for a three-year period,” Ogunjobi told BBC Sport Online. Globacom recently won the licence to operate as Nigeria’s second national phone carrier. Salisu Abubakar, head of NFA’s league department, said the sponsorship deal was subject to a review in 2006. “The league will now be called Globacom Premier League. ”

The league had no sponsor last season, after Nigeria’s Pepsi franchise holder, Seven-Up Bottling Company, pulled out. Ogunjobi said the NFA and Globacom will sign the contract next week, when earnings that will accrue to the clubs from the sponsorship package would be announced. “This new deal will definitely improve the standard of our league, which will now have lots of modifications and innovations,” the FA secretary-general said… Ogunjobi said the NFA and Globacom will sign the contract next week, when earnings that will accrue to the clubs from the sponsorship package would be announced. “This new deal will definitely improve the standard of our league, which will now have lots of modifications and innovations,” the FA secretary-general said. 5-match ban for Keane Tofting gets four months in jail War clause in…
Calcutta Telegraph – Oct 17, 2002
The 31-year-old faced disrepute charges over a claim in his autobiography that he deliberately set out to hurt Manchester City?s Alf Inge Haaland in a game in April 2001. The first charge related to the tackle itself which earned Keane a red card, while the second addressed the question of the Irishman publishing an account of the incident for financial reward. l Copenhagen: Former Denmark international Stig Tofting, who was on the national World Cup squad this year, has been sentenced to four months in prison for assaulting two restaurant employees here this summer. The 33-year-old midfielder was dining with several members of the Danish soccer squad on June 23 when a dispute broke out with the staff over singing in the trendy restaurant. The Copenhagen city court found Tofting guilty of assault, a penalty that carries a maximum of 18 months in prison. Tofting, who plays for English Premier League club Bolton, had denied the initial charges of aggravated assault but admitted he butted heads with an employee in the restaurant and punched another after he was asked to leave. ?I think it?s a tough sentence,? said Tofting as he left the court with wife Bettina… He has two weeks to appeal the decision. It was not immediately known when the Dane would be jailed. l Berlin: The German coach likely to train Iraq?s national football team wants a contract loophole allowing him to quit the job if war breaks out. ?It?s pretty clear: if war comes, there won?t be any soccer,? German tabloids have dubbed the well-travelled Stange ?Saddam?s coach?. He has coached in Oman, Australia and the Ukraine.

City guide: Melbourne
BBC News – Oct 16, 2002
Of course, the indigenous population could not hold off the inevitable
forever and in May 1835 John Batman bought around 240,000 hectares of land
off the local Aborigine clan on behalf of a group of Tasmanian entrepreneurs
and Melbourne was born. But it was not until 1837 that the settlement was named and military
surveyor Robert Hoddle designed the city’s familiar grid layout. Melbourne has certainly grown since then, managing to become both a leafy,
bayside community on the brown Yarra River and a cosmopolitan, football
crazy haven for the avant-garde. Given its obvious qualities, it’s not surprising Melbourne is so popular
with tourists and has recently been voted one of the best cities in the
world to live in.

Alright and I hold this dummy up. replica oakleys It gets these guys used to tackling and wrapping up too and I want this angle a little bit cheap football jerseys steeper on this one, set, go, boom, comes in and hits, boom and it gives you a nice little tackle there, good job. We’re going to do it with Rouse real quick, set, go, boom, comes in and tackles the dummy, keeps moving in that sharp angle as well. All in all, the rookie looked impressive once again. One colleague, who has now left the job, was intentionally driven into by a bandit car recently stolen by means of burglary. She made it, but it was one of the more serious injuries, because a car was used, so it required a significant stay in hospital. She was, as is right and proper, visited by senior staff. As it was, she was out of her gourd on morphine, and greeted the commander of the North East Cluster by pulling up her hospital gown and offering to show him her gash. model of law enforcement, we have a thing we call Policing By Consent, based on the principles of a chap called Sir Robert Peel, who came up with the Metropolitan Police in 1829. coppers who are issued more guns than cameras, this approach probably sounds like the kind of woolly pinko nonsense that they’d expect http://www.cheapnfljerseysx.com from us tea sipping dandies.
