Hartson looking for more goals at Dundee Utd
rte.ie – Nov 9, 2002
I always seemed to do well against Tottenham, against Sol Campbell in particular, and Ian Rush always used to do well against Everton against his pal Neville Southall. “United already know the former Arsenal man is in good form as he hit four against Aberdeen last week in a 7-0 Parkhead romp. Although he is not a fixture under the Martin O’Neill regime, he is nevertheless an integral part of his country’s remarkable revival under Mark Hughes. So much so in fact that a club versus country row almost boiled over when Hartson, along with English-based stars Ryan Giggs, Robbie Savage, Mark Pembridge and Andy Melville, were told to miss league matches to prepare for the Euro 2004 qualifier with Azerbaijan later in the month. Hartson would have missed a game with Partick Thistle three days before the November 20 qualifier but FIFA has not given him permission to play in both games. He said: “If I play against Partick, which I am fully entitled to do, then I will just have to make arrangements to fly to Bristol on the Sunday night. They don’t do flights to Cardiff from Glasgow on Sunday so I will have to fly to Bristol about half past seven and then travel down to Cardiff to the hotel… “United already know the former Arsenal man is in good form as he hit four against Aberdeen last week in a 7-0 Parkhead romp. We fly out about half past one on the Monday so it’s not ideal, really.

Missing trio return for Scots
BBC News – Nov 8, 2002
And in-form Leicester striker Paul Dickov regains his place after missing the last two games. Vogts said: “In the last two weeks, I have seen a lot of games and I saw Leicester against Nottingham Forest in which he (Dickov) did well. "

(Paul Dickov) is a very good striker and now he is back again

"

Berti Vogts

“Maybe it was not fair after the Faroes that I took him off the list. “He is a very good striker and now he is back again. ”

Vogts had played Dickov on the right wing in Toftir after being told by Foxes boss Micky Adams, who had travelled up to Scotland to meet with Vogts, that he could operate there. But, with the Scots 2-0 down at half-time, Dickov was substituted and then overlooked for the qualifier in Iceland and the friendly with Canada which followed. Vogts continued: “Now I say it was a mistake to have played him there but I had had a discussion with the manager… Vogts continued: “Now I say it was a mistake to have played him there but I had had a discussion with the manager. “But it was not the right position for him. ”

A place on the bench awaits the ex-Arsenal and Manchester City man though as Vogts is set to stick with his first-choice partnership of Stevie Crawford and Steven Thompson, even though the latter is suspended for the next Euro 2004 qualifier. A lack of fitness meant no place for Dominic Matteo, Neil McCann, Scot Gemmill and Jackie McNamara. Don Hutchison is still out following knee reconstruction surgery but Vogts was hopeful the striker would fly out to join the squad despite having no chance of playing. Recent debutants Paul Devlin and Russell Anderson retain their places. And Kevin Kyle and Gareth Williams, who were dropped to the Under-21 squad in Iceland last month, remain part of the senior squad.

Eriksson’s reaction to book
U.TV – Nov 10, 2002
Jonsson, who had a much-publicised affair with her fellow Swede, has sold the serialisation rights to her book for up to ?700,000, a sum usually only paid out for salacious and revelatory details. An initial interview with the TV celebrity is expected to be published overnight, with the first instalment of the serialisation due on the streets just as England play their opening Euro 2004 qualifier in Slovakia tomorrow night… I want to win this game and that`s it. “I have talked a lot to the players but only about football. I`m sure they are not very interested in my private life. “I`m quite sure about that, 100%. I don`t think they care at all about that. “Eriksson went on to dismiss the book as “other things which are not that important and shouldn`t be that important at all to England fans, the players and the staff“. Indeed, he is right.

Keane snubs truce | Republic Of Ireland | International | Football |…
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 8, 2002
The Football Association of Ireland, with the knowledge of manager Mick McCarthy, recently attempted to broker another peace deal with Keane as the Republic prepare for the Euro 2004 qualifiers which begin with a game in Russia next month. A highly-ranked FAI official went as far as to contact Michael Kennedy, Keane’s solicitor, about the possibility of a reconciliation in the wake of the World Cup fiasco when Keane was sent home for his expletive-filled tirade at McCarthy in front of the other players. Keane could have rejoined the squad in Japan but refused to apologise to McCarthy. The second, more recent attempt to broker a peace deal again failed because Keane refused to say he was sorry and, with McCarthy in charge for the next two years, the midfielder, now 32, has effectively ended his international career… The second, more recent attempt to broker a peace deal again failed because Keane refused to say he was sorry and, with McCarthy in charge for the next two years, the midfielder, now 32, has effectively ended his international career. Keane told yesterday of his successful battle against alcohol in his book Keane: The Autobiography. He said: “It’s a big problem. I don’t think I had a choice but to stop drinking if I wanted to carry on playing. “In the book, Keane also accused one unnamed team-mate of “shaking” before the Champions League semi-final tussle with Bayer Leverkusen.

UEFA clarifies EURO 2008 process
uefa.comUEFA.com – Nov 8, 2002
UEFA President Lennart Johansson announced details of the procedure at the end of the Executive Committee’s two-day meeting in Copenhagen today. Final presentationFollowing a final presentation of the bids to the Joint National Teams’ Committee and the Executive Committee, the eight eligible members of the Executive Committee will hold talks with the aim of reducing the seven bids to two or three. Once a shortlist has been drawn up, then all Executive Committee members not affected by the remaining bids are admitted into the discussion and take part in the decision. At the end of the discussions the members will vote and if a bidder receives an absolute majority, this bid will be chosen. December decisionIf there is no such majority, the bidder with the lowest vote is eliminated and a final ballot between the remaining two bidders occurs. An Executive Committee meeting is scheduled for December 12 and 13 and it is likely the decision on EURO 2008 will be made on the first day. The seven bidders are Austria and Switzerland, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greece and Turkey, Hungary, Nordic 2008 (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, with the support of Iceland and Faroe Islands), Russia, and Scotland and the Republic of Ireland… Host countries confirmedMr Johansson also confirmed the host countries for a number of upcoming UEFA tournaments. England should win but it may not be pretty to watch, and the best value bet is a narrow England victory with a draw at half-time available at 7-2 compared with the prohibitive 1-2 for a straight England victory. Scotland made a dreadful start to their qualifying campaign by failing to beat the Faroe Islands but look over the odds at 3-1 to claim victory in Reykjavik against Iceland this afternoon. Berti Vogts’s position would be almost untenable as Scotland would effectively be out of the competition before they have even played the group favourites, Germany.

Vogts lowers Scots’ sights
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 10, 2002
Iceland is not a place to be caught cold. Atli Edvaldsson’s team may have had their own share of poor results, losing to Northern Ireland and Hungary in the last 15 months, but they are also capable of erupting like one of the island’s spectacular geysers, as the Czech Republic found to their cost in a 3-1 defeat here last year. The most threatening geezer as far as the Scots are concerned is Chelsea’s Eidur Gudjohnsen who, along with Hiegi Sigurdsson of Norway’s SFK Lyn, has scored more goals than anyone in Vogts’ squad. In fact, the Scots’ lack of firepower is such that the accolade of top marksman falls to Christian Dailly, who has amassed three goals. Vogts believes that Iceland are favourites today, but said once more that his players were waiting for the transformation which will be wrought by a first victory.

Slovakia aim to halt decline on world stage
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 10, 2002
During a weekend in 1998, players for Slovakia’s clubs all wore black armbands to signify “the death of Slovakian football” after a 3-0 home defeat to Portugal. There has been little to suggest a revival since then. Judging by Jurkemic’s demeanour yesterday, he does not expect one any time soon.
