Easy passage lost
Al-Ahram Weekly – Dec 26, 2002
The latest dispute concerns the recent announcement by CAF that it had scrapped plans to select five African teams for the 2006 World Cup through the African Nations Cup (ANC) to be held in Cairo the same year. The decision was a U-turn from CAF’s earlier stand, taken in January 2002 by its general assembly in Mali, that the top five teams in the ANC would automatically qualify for the World Cup. After putting down bids for the ANC from the Ivory Coast, Algeria and Libya, and following the sudden withdrawal of South Africa and Morocco, Egypt got the nod. Egypt, which has made two World Cup appearances, last made it to the global showpiece in 1990. By hosting the 2006 ANC, Egypt hoped to kill two birds with one stone: win the ANC trophy for the fifth time and more importantly qualify for the World Cup.

?Otherwise I wouldn?t come to such a big country,? he said. ?I think there?s a very big future, and maybe I?d like to be part of it. ? But after China?s lackluster showing at this year?s World Cup, some football enthusiasts are starting to ask if the real issue is the quality of the country?s players, rather than the skills of the coach. ?China?s national team is like a primary school class, and it doesn?t make any sense to have an outstanding university professor teach them,? said Liu Fuxiang, a Beijing fan. ?At the very most, a high school teacher would do.

They might even bring up the glorious Kiwi qualification of 1982. And so, in the interests of placating our trans-Tasman neighbours, I’ll revise my view. Either Australia or New Zealand is off to Germany for the 2006 World Cup. American Samoan supporters might rail at that suggestion.

talent in European leagues. The financial crisis in European football makes it harder for Americans to sign with those clubs. “I saw nearly 100 players last time, and sometimes there isn’t any rhyme or reason to the roster changes,” Arena said. “At some point I need to say no more experimentation, but that’s not likely to happen until the summer of 2004. “Over the next year-and-a-half, we have the freedom to look at as many players as we think makes sense. ”

?If our conclusions are positive, then we will put forward our project for FIFA to either say if it is viable or not, or if we must continue to work on it or whether we should stop,? said Braga who added that the idea of a five-nation bid was not as fanciful as its seems. ?The distance between Guayaquil in Ecuador and Santa Cruz in Bolivia is the same as that from Seoul in South Korea and Sapporo in Japan,? he added referring to this summer?s finals in Asia. Under FIFA rules of rotating the World Cup from continent to continent, it will be the turn of South America in 2014 with Germany hosting the 2006 event and the 2010 finals already promised to Africa. Last week, the Argentinian federation said that Brazil would be the best country to host the 2014 tournament. ?I don?t think Argentina will be nominated. Brazil have not staged the tournament since 1950 and we organised it in 1978,? said Argentinian Football Federation president Julio Grondona. But he added that if Brazil were not to organise the tournament, then Argentina would be willing to do so possibly in partnership with Chile or Uruguay.

German football’s money worries
BBC News – Dec 23, 2002
So much so that a number of Germany’s professional football clubs say they will have to file for bankruptcy by the spring, if they do not save some money fast. It is all rather embarrassing for the country set to host the World Cup in 2006. Germany’s ailing economy has meant far less sponsorship money for the clubs, which are now around $600m in debt. Although the biggest names of German football are not yet having to count their euros and cents, a number of other professional clubs are slashing their players’ wages in order to stay afloat… It is all rather embarrassing for the country set to host the World Cup in 2006. Besides a World Cup berth, the CFA also hopes Haan do well at the 2004 Asian Cup, to be hosted by China. Haan, who recently came to Beijing to finalize the contract, said “when I know more about the Chinese soccer, we’ll have some goals. I believe we can have a good result at the Asian Cup, and to qualify for the Germany World Cup in 2006. I have a lot of confidence to do it. ”

GFA sources have revealed to the Graphic Sports that the meeting which should have taken place on Monday had to be postponed to Tuesday because of the Black Queens’ emergency call on President J. Kufour at the Castle, almost at the same time. Ahead of the FA’s meeting on Tuesday, the FA has received about half a dozen applications from some local and foreign coaches, all seeking the job from which Yugoslav Milan Zivadinovic fled last September… After the tournament, the FA resolved to use the squad that participated in Mali as the nucleus of the future. The core of that squad was to be maintained through the Olympic and Africa Cup qualifications series to the finals of the two competition s both in 2004. From then the FA’s expectation is that the squad would have been steeled enough for a World Cup assault by 2006. Alas, that appears not to be the progression. Instead of the regular roles expected of the likes of Sammy Adjei, George Paintsil, Baffour Djan, John Mensah, impatient Ghanaians are struggling to figure out what is real about the likes of Abukari Kankani, Daniel Yeboah and Dedon Angelo. It is the pressure to settle on the latter list which forced Afranie into the open to scream lack of cooperation from players and the FA ahead of the week-end’s trip to Egypt where the Stars held the Pharaohs to a goalless stalemate. It is not too clear what is swaying the G. A wildly in the favor of the Dutchman but it appears that his highly impressive CV and disciplinary record is the basic reason. Despite the fact that his coaching career has been confined mostly to his native land, his immense experience as a coach which has seen him lead the likes of PSV Eindhoven and Willem II (U20) to win their respective leagues in Holland and lately Al Jazira of UAE as well as Qadisa Sporting Club of Kuwait to win the President?s Cup speaks volumes of his capabilities. As a football recruit for Newcastle United, Willem is said to have made laudable recruitment for the team and is particularly credited with having a good eye for African players notably Nigerian born British Shola Amoebe.

Tough tackling players cry foul as Gerrard awaits fate
Irish Independent – Dec 24, 2002
It is impossible to get it right all the time. “In fairness to them, during this season and the past, they have looked at the video, changed their mind and common sense has prevailed. ” Meanwhile, the chances of England staging the 2014 World Cup are receding, with Sepp Blatter, the FIFA president, clearly backing a South American bid rather than one from Europe. With Blatter having assured Africa that it would stage the 2010 finals, for which South Africa is favourite, he is now turning his attention to the following tournament. Football’s world governing body is keen to rotate the event round the continental confederations and, with Germany staging the 2006 tournament, it is increasingly unlikely that it will return to Europe until 2018 at the earliest. Certainly, Blatter, who was controversially re-elected as FIFA president in Seoul in May, despite opposition from many European countries, including England, is unlikely to be kindly disposed towards the continent. Blatter also said that he expected a world club tournament would take place in 2005.
