2002 Review: Year of the World Cup
Turkish Daily News – Turkish Daily News (subscription) – Dec 29, 2002
Captain Hakan Sukur, previously a shadow of his feared former self, set a World Cup record by opening the scoring after just 11 seconds. Korea leveled but 2 goals from Ilhan put Turkey back in the driving seat and when the Koreans scored their second it was too late to make a difference. What will most be remembered about this game is not the soccer but the scenes afterwards. The home fans, who had welcomed Turkey with open arms from the start, were generous in their applause for the victor and players from the two teams linked hands to salute the crowd. To renewed applause, several members of the Turkish team hoisted their young children onto their shoulders for the medal ceremony. It was a party atmosphere in which the result no longer mattered. At this point I have to say that what I will remember most about this World Cup is the street celebrations after the Senegal game… It did not, obviously in part because of the draw, overcome a team from either of soccer’s strongest regions, Europe and South America. Despite regular Senol Gunes claims to the contrary, it cannot yet claim to have established itself as a world power even after the third place finish. It can, however, achieve that by qualifying for Euro 2004 in Portugal and then doing well there. To date the signs are good. Since the World Cup, Turkey has won Euro 2004 qualifiers at home to Slovakia and Liechtenstein and against FYR Macedonia on the road. It also won a comfortable home victory in a friendly against Georgia and earned a highly creditable draw in another firendly away to Italy, a game it could have won. The acid Euro 2004 test, though, comes next April when it meets its strongest qualifying group rival England in Liverpool.

Time is of the essence to Eriksson
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 30, 2002
Several players, notably David Beckham and Michael Owen, were below their best in the Far East because of injuries picked up during the season. The reduction from a maximum of 17 to 13 games in the Champions League should also help clubs fit in extra mid-week domestic features. Reflecting on the 2002 World Cup finals, where England did not score a second half goal, Eriksson was critical of the players’ fitness. “Even against Argentina we dropped back a lot in the last 15 or 20 minutes,” said Eriksson. “You have to learn and you have to try to do it better next time.

Arsenal’s Cole ruled out for six weeks
abc.net.au – Jan 3, 2003
“It was very tempting to wait until the end of the season, but I’m not a big fan of playing players who are injured. “I thought it was better to do it straight away. Ashley also wanted it to be done as otherwise he could not play to his full potential. ” Cole will miss England’s Euro 2004 qualifiers against Liechtenstein on March 28 and the crunch match against Turkey on April 2, as well as the Gunners’ crucial Champions League clashes with Roma and Valencia. England are most likely to turn to Southampton’s Wayne Bridge as cover while left-sided Arsenal midfielder Giovanni van Bronckhorst has experience of playing in a defensive role for both his former club Rangers and for Holland. “Sometimes this kind of hole can be a revelation for someone and Giovanni van Bronckhorst is my favourite to fill in, although Kolo Toure and Pascal Cygan can play there too,” Wenger said.

WALES V RUSSIA SPREAD BETTING PREVIEW

The first game was littered with bad challenges, players taking

retribution and bad sportsmanship. One of the biggest offenders was Evseev who was fortunate to

not cause Ryan Giggs a season ending injury. The Welsh winger later took his revenge which was not picked up

by the match officials. Fortunately with so little time between games UEFA are unlikely to hand out a

punishment if any before Wednesday evening… The first game was littered with bad challenges, players taking

not cause Ryan Giggs a season ending injury. The Welsh winger later took his revenge which was not picked up

by the match officials. Fortunately with so little time between games UEFA are unlikely to hand out a

punishment if any before Wednesday evening. After witnessing how Giggs reacted last Saturday,

Russia will no doubt do what they can in an attempt to try and provoke something similar. With all the column

inches devoted to that incident, another flailing elbow would more than likely see a yellow or even red

card.

Who will win silverware in 2003?
BBC News – Dec 29, 2002
And with the Worthington Cup, FA Cup and Champions League still to play for, there’s plenty of glory up for grabs. Euro 2004 has already thrown up some shock results but all the home nations will be hoping to make it through to Portugal. Who are you tipping to take the trophies in 2003?

This debate is now closed. A selection of your e-mails appear below. There are now only three teams I feel that can win the league this season: Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea. Liverpool’s diabolical run has blown their title chances… Sean, England

Arsenal look good to win the English Premiership to make it back to back, all things being equal with injuries. The weak point is that should Thierry Henry lose form for any amount of time, Manchester United could swoop to make it interesting. The other teams outside of these two do not have ‘it’ in England. I believe AC Milan have the firepower to win the Champions League this year and are better defensively than in the past. They may play Manchester United in the final. Richard,
Australia

The Premiership is so tight this year it is very difficult to call. My prediction is Man United top, Arsenal second and the surprise will be Man City in third beating Southampton only by a point.

Rangers get Thompson
BBC News – Dec 31, 2002
“I’m here to try to make myself the number one striker at Rangers,” he said. “There is a lot of quality here and if you can’t learn from players like that you’ll never learn. But I am not looking to be just a squad player at Rangers. ”

Nominal fee

Rangers manager Alex McLeish added: “Over the last year Steven has really established himself and he has a fantastic opportunity here at Rangers. “Every once in a while you get a crack at something like this and it’s up to Steven to make the most of it. ”

A move to Ibrox had been mooted for Thompson, who has scored nine times for United this season, after he was placed on the transfer list at Tannadice. But it had looked increasingly likely that nothing would happen until the player’s contract with United ran out in the summer, with Rangers boss Alex McLeish denying that a deal was imminent… A nominal fee in the region of ?200,000 is thought to have been involved. Thompson has become a regular in the Scotland team since Berti Vogts took over as manager. He scored his first international goal in the friendly victory over Canada, but also impressed alongside Stevie Crawford in the Euro 2004 qualifier win over Iceland.

ESPNsoccernet – England – Butt back next week
go.com – Jan 3, 2003
MAN_UTD –>Updated: Jan. 3, 2003Butt prepares for United returnEngland midfielder Nicky Butt says he expects to return to action for Manchester United next week following an ankle injury. Butt, who needed surgery, has not played since picking upthe injury during England’s 2-2 draw with Macedonia in a Euro2004 qualifier in Southampton on October 16. ‘I’m pretty close now, it’s just a case of hoping not to getany reaction from the ball work I’m doing,’ he told MUTV. ‘With a bit of luck, I should be ready in a week. If I rushback, and it swells up, it could be another couple of months. Soit would be a bit silly to rush back.

2003: A year to beat the system
Telegraph.co.uk – Dec 31, 2002
Let’s leave that complex issue for a day when the head hurts less. Though the individuals catch our eye, this is a year for teams – in rugby, cricket and football, and not just in England. All the home unions contest the Rugby World Cup in Australia (Oct 10-Nov 22)… A personal hope in this Euro 2004 qualifying year is that Eriksson, an interesting man, ceases to be deliberately uninteresting in public. Time for him to come out from behind those mental drapes. On the field he has a formidable task. The Turks are plainly the best side in qualifying Group Seven. Expect the closing Turkey-England match on Oct 11 to be the most shamelessly overblown mock-apocalypse of the year.

The Czech recipe for success
uefa.comUEFA.com – Jan 3, 2003
“We are obliged to work in different ways to the big clubs in Western Europe,” explained Fitzel. “Giants such as [FC] Bayern München or Manchester United [FC] can invite many young players, a lot of them from abroad, to their training – only to eventually say goodbye to most of them. We do not have such financial backing, so we must nurse every young trainee very carefully. “Government helpThere are 64 soccer classes for football pupils, and 40 centres for talented youth players aged between 15 and 18 are linked with clubs, but around half of their budget is met by the government. Football player “production” in the Czech Republic is having an effect on the domestic league, where the average age of players is continually decreasing. “There is no doubt that it is more profitable for them to have talented teenagers with modest demands in their league squads than older players on opulent deals,” said Fitzel. Open door to the worldThe youngsters are making hay while the sun shines… “There is no problem for a player to advance to a higher age category. He doesn’t have to learn anything new. ” The national team has already made a winning start to the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying competition. It seems that the Czech Republic’s sophisticated system of painstakingly nurturing its young footballers will continue to pay handsome dividends in future years. All rights reserved.

Mark Hughes
BBC News – Dec 31, 2002
The results are even more remarkable considering the quality of the opposition Wales faced, and what had come before. Only a year ago, Hughes was actually on the brink of leading Wales to their worst-ever run of results. But a 1-0 win against Belarus brought to an end the 12-match streak without a win – and the team has not looked back since. Friendly matches brought draws with Argentina, the Czech Republic and Croatia, and a memorable win over Germany. Next up were the opening matches of the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign; and the now supremely confident Wales beat Finland, Italy and Azerbaijan. Three wins out of three, nine points out of nine, and sitting proudly on top of Group Nine. Even during the difficult times in 2001, the players never stopped believing in Hughes… But a 1-0 win against Belarus brought to an end the 12-match streak without a win – and the team has not looked back since. FA CUP FIRST ROUND REPLAY BETTING REVIEW
Readabet.com – Jan 1, 2003
com didn’t neglect their duty to take an in-depth look at the live game on

Sky Sports – both from a Fixed Odds AND Spread Betting perspective. In the Fixed Odds preview, Dave

Pilgrim advised staking 2 points on Lee Boylan of Canvey Island to score at anytime against Southend United. The following is what our football analyst had to say on the striker… Shortly before the Spreads firms opened

for business, a Spread Betting preview appeared on readaBet alerting our users to the high possibility of

numerous cards. Aided by some eagle eyes in the readaBet office coupled with his own knowledge on the lower

leagues – Dave Pilgrim – was quick to pick up on the IG bookings quote. We had not anticipated

that we would find anything of interest on the spreads for the FA Cup this midweek, but IG Sport have come up

trumps and offer the bookings points for tonight’s local derby between Canvey Island and Southend at just

42-46. There is no doubt about it, this games has all the makings of a thriller, and the

passion could spill over. Southend are getting frustrated in the league, and struggling to beat teams, so a

cup run would mean everything, while Canvey have been forced to live in the shadow of their league rivals, so

will be desperate to pitch their flag by grinding out a win. The last two games between

these sides have produced 11 cards, and Southend games have had a tendency to transcend into indiscipline,

with three red cards in the seven games. It would be no surprise to see this game join that group, and even

in the worst case scenario, it is difficult to see this game having anything less than three cards,

regardless of how the match is refereed.

BIRMINGHAM V CHARLTON BETTING PREVIEW
Readabet.com – Jan 1, 2003
This information will especially be of interest for Spreads players

who may wish to buy Forssell’s goal minutes at 24 with Sporting. In the three games this season

that he has scored – his goal minutes have made up at 31, 84, 127. There was also the goal against Wales in a

Euro 2004 qualifier that came in the 79th minute. Last season in the Bundesliga in the seven games he scored

– only two of the matches produced first half strikes. The evidence would therefore suggest so far

that when Forsell scores – it is not normally early on. Forsell is

available at 2… There was also the goal against Wales in a
