Morocco, Tunisia to bid jointly for 2010 World Cup
Middle East Online – Jan 10, 2003
RABAT – Morocco and Tunisia are to present a joint bid to host the 2010 World Cup finals, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) announced Friday. The contest is confined to African countries under a new rotation system introduced by world football governing body FIFA to give each continent an opportunity to host the event. Morocco presented their candidature last November. Their previous bids for the 1994, 1998 and 2006 tournaments failed.

Cameroon snubs Nigerian bid
BBC News – Jan 15, 2003
Mukete said he was worried that six countries were bidding for the tournament. “I am very disturbed as an African. South Africa narrowly lost the 2006 bid. Suddenly we’re divided, with many countries thinking of hosting the World Cup. ”

He said that all of Africa should throw its weight being South Africa’s bid. Cameroon has made no indication as to which African bid it will back.

UK track record hits Olympic hopes
The Observer – Jan 12, 2003
It has concluded that London’s chances of being awarded the event have been seriously reduced by a series of structural weaknesses in a British bid. Paris would almost certainly beat London in a race for 2012, it says. It believes the sagas surrounding the Millennium Dome, the rebuilding of Wembley Stadium and the ill-fated plan for a national athletics stadium at Picketts Lock in north London have damaged this country’s international reputation. Its findings are a particular setback for supporters of a British bid to stage the Games, who include MPs of all parties, sports stars, business leaders and London’s Mayor, Ken Livingstone.

“We have therefore accepted Jim’s request that he be given time to consider his options. Whatever transpires over next few months, there is no doubting Duffy’s loyalty to Dundee, or his integrity. Not only has he proved himself to be a shrewd football manager but also a sensitive manager of people, doing his utmost to help the redundant office staff find re-employment, and not just the high-earning players. As far as the cut-backs are concerned, new restrictions are currently introduced on a daily basis. The latest edict to curb expenditure is for the floodlights to be used sparingly, and yesterday’s under-21 meeting with Livingston was moved to an afternoon kick-off, saving another £400. Like it or not, the electricity meter will be turning tomorrow night when Hearts visit Dens for a CIS League Cup quarter-final, a matter which preoccupies Duffy. “For all the talk of myself moving on, all I’m interested in right now is committing myself 100 per cent to Dundee, and helping them win this match… Aberdeen manager Steve Paterson is confident his side can advance against Livingston, a team accustomed in recent years to ending Aberdeen cup runs. “If we show the commitment and confidence we have of late, the Cup might just change our luck for the better. “Berti Vogts will begin his preparations for Scotland’s World Cup 2006 qualifying campaign with a future squad clash with Turkey next week where he will take a look at five new players. The Scotland coach’s squad for Wednesday’s match at Tannadice – not Dens Park as originally planned – includes Coventry goalkeeper Scott Shearer, Reading defender Graeme Murty, midfielders Michael McIndoe of Doncaster and Tommy Miller of Ipswich, and Rangers striker Steven MacLean. Vogts said: “This match marks the first stage of our World Cup campaign, as it gives these players a chance to show what they can do. “SCOTLAND FUTURE (v Turkey, Tannadice, Dec 3). – Squad: C Gordon (Hearts), S Shearer (Coventry), D Soutar (Dundee); S Caldwell (Newcastle), G Caldwell (Newcastle), J McAllister (Livingston), L Mair (Dundee), G Murty (Reading), A Webster (Hearts); P Canero (Kilmarnock), K Harper (Portsmouth), M McIndoe (Doncaster), T Miller (Ipswich), N Montgomery (Sheff Utd), S Murray (Reading), S Severin (Hearts), G Williams (Nottingham Forest), I Murray (Hibs), S Pearson (Motherwell); K Boyd (Kilmarnock), P Gallagher (Blackburn), L McCulloch (Wigan), S MacLean (Rangers), G O’Connor (Hibs).

Independent Online – Jan 11, 2003
The former Manchester United striker, who had combined playing with officially doing the job on a part-time basis since taking charge at the end of 1999, has steered Wales to an eight-match unbeaten run. “Mark has signed a two-year extension to his current contract which he delivered to our offices on Friday,” an FAW spokesperson said. “His deal up until now had been on a part-time basis.
