“Brian already has international experience and that made him an ideal candidate. Secondly, he knows more than half of the players in the squad and is very popular among the players. “Quick appointment”It has all happened in the last couple of days,” added Kidd, insisting that his new role would not affect his work with former England manager Terry Venables at Leeds. “Terry Venables has been extremely supportive so, as soon as I got the green light from him, it all went from there. ‘A wonderful experience’”Mr Eriksson is without a doubt one of the motivating factors,” added Kidd. “Working with him, Tord Grip, Sammy Lee, Dave Sexton, Ray Clemence and the rest of the coaching staff will be a wonderful experience for me. Nigeria 2010 World Cup: More than a Football Event
This Day – This Day (subscription) – Jan 11, 2003
The power of the game itself has been described as the greatest investment for peace and understanding amongst nations of the world. The event has become the single most followed event in the history of mankind. Over five billion people in every nation on earth watched the last World Cup! It is also the one event in the world that has transcended all sectional and parochial interests. So powerful is its influence and so passionate its followership that no single nation has total control over its affairs… This right has been won through the performances of a few countries in Afiica notably Morocco, Cameroon, Ghana and Nigeria at various levels of competition at global level. The competition shall not come back to the continent for at least another 28 years if the rotational formula that is adopted even now is to be followed. Of the five, one is a four-nation joint hosting proposal – the Nordic nations of Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden, in what is now described as a Nordic United bid!
Five South American countries have also already indicated they would be submitting a joint cohosting bid for the 2014 World Cup. It is, therefore, not farfetched as an idea if the three neighbouring countries along the west coast of Africa that have earned the right to seek hosting to submit a joint bid to host the first such global event in Africa. Nigeria just seems to be ahead of the world in this innovative exciting proposal. When the geography of the region is examined, it becomes even clearer and more exciting to include a few more countries, purely from the geography of the area.

Artificial pitches now the real thing – Jan 19, 2003
“Artificial grass is often better than the real thing these days,” said Rene Eberle, UEFA’s head of competitions, “and its use in all major competitions is inevitable. I am certain of that. Half the World Cup in 2010 and Euro 2008 will be played on artificial pitches, so players better start getting used to it now. “We have moved on since the dangerous days of QPR and Luton and every top-flight club uses such pitches for training. In the next 10 years they may be installing them for matches too. “It makes more sense than clubs relaying their pitch two or three times a season at considerable expense. “So far two clubs, Torpedo Moscow and Salzburg, have obtained permission from their respective leagues in Russia and Austria to test the pitches for a season and UEFA hope four others – including one Scottish side – will join the pilot scheme… Cash-strapped clubs in the Nationwide League will also be keen to fit them so they can stage other events on them during the week to raise funds. “The old guard, however, remain unconvinced. Graeme Le Saux, who played in Chelsea’s game against Charlton last week, said players still do not trust artificial grass and do not play their natural game on it. “I played on the Loftus Road and Kenilworth Road pitches when they experimented with Astroturf and it was a nightmare,” he said. “No one liked playing on them and QPR and Luton had a distinct advantage over all their visitors. “We have an artificial pitch at our training ground but we rarely use it. Although technological advances mean that the surface behaves a lot like grass now, you still like the pitch to have enough ‘give’ in it to cushion a fall.
