Le world is not enough
The Age – Jan 26, 2003
Many believed the national team’s ignominious exit from last year’s World Cup finals, winless and goalless, signalled the start of the decline for French soccer, as the ageing class of France 98 and Euro 2000 faded into the twilight of their careers, their heirs none too apparent. But reports of a demise look to have been grossly exaggerated. France has made a flying start to its Euro 2004 qualifying campaign, taking maximum points from its three matches to date, albeit in a soft group containing Israel, Cyprus, Slovenia and Malta. At club level, too, the French are looking fantastique. Arsenal pair Thierry Henry and Robert Pires have joined Zinedine Zidane in the top bracket of international players, while their countrymen are still very much in vogue in what counts for a transfer market these days. Who did Gerard Houllier target last week to bring some much needed width to his one-dimensional Liverpool? A fellow Frenchman, in Southampton winger Fabrice Fernandes. The thing that sets apart this generation of French players is their superb technique, honed in academies and polished to near-perfection during the dispersal in the 1990s, mostly to Italy, of the country’s finest young talent for the finishing touches to a soccer education that would yield spectacular results by the end of the decade… Witness Henry’s hat-trick – his second of the season and third in all for the Gunners – in the 3-1 win over West Ham last week: a penalty kick, his first headed goal for the club and a clever chip over advancing keeper David James (from a Pires through-ball), all executed with deadly efficiency. Dutchman Dennis Bergkamp also showed superb technique in providing Henry’s second, as much for his pinpoint cross to the far post as the “don’t argue” swipe at Lee Bowyer that preceded it. But Bergkamp, the velvet hardman of the Premier League, is another story. Steve Bruce has also sought some French resistance in Birmingham’s battle against relegation, bringing in Christophe Dugarry on loan from Bordeaux.

Oster and Jones return for Wales
BBC News – Jan 27, 2003

(Gabbidon’s) got this ongoing back problem which is a worry, but Cardiff are handling him well and not pushing him
"

Mark Hughes

Hughes said: “Both lads have recovered from long term injuries and this is a
chance to get them back into the squad. ”

“Matt’s had a difficult period but has shown a lot of positive thinking and applied himself well. “John’s not played for us for a long time, but it was the right time to bring him back in. ”

Danny Gabbidon is included in the squad, despite not playing since 9 November because of a back injury. “He’s got this ongoing back problem which is a worry, but Cardiff are handling him well and not pushing him,” said Hughes. Nathan Blake is the other major fitness doubt. The Wolves striker has not appeared since before Christmas… Gary Speed, Rhys Weston, Paul Trollope and Paul Evans are also included, although they are recovering from injuries. Crystal Palace’s strong league and cup form has helped Kit Symons claim a place in the squad. Wales manager Mark Hughes is keen on Bosnia as opponents because he feels they will be a similar outfit to Yugoslavia, who Wales face next April in the Euro 2004 qualifiers. Hughes’ assistant coach Mark Bowen will not be released from his Birmingham duties to assist in preparations for the match. Wales squad for Bosnia, Cardiff, 12 February:

Goalkeepers: Paul Jones (Southampton), Mark Crossley (Middlesborough), Darren Ward (Nottingham Forest), Danny Coyne (Grimsby)
Defenders: Andy Melville (Fulham), Kit Symons (Crystal Palace), Robert Page (Sheffield United), Mark Delaney (Aston Villa), Darren Barnard (Grimsby), Danny Gabbidon (Cardiff), Rhys Weston (Cardiff)
Midfielders: Gary Speed (Newcastle), Mark Pembridge (Everton), Robbie Savage (Birmingham), Simon Davies (Spurs), Matthew Jones (Leicester), Carl Robinson (Sheffield Wednesday), Andy Johnson (West Brom), Paul Trollope (Northampton), John Oster (Sunderland), Paul Evans (Blackpool), Jason Koumas (West Brom)
Forwards: Ryan Giggs (Man Utd), John Hartson (Celtic), Nathan Blake (Wolves), Craig Bellamy (Newcastle), Gareth Taylor (Burnley), Rob Earnshaw (Cardiff)

Bruce rules out Vittek approach

The Slovan Bratislava player has spent two spells training with the Blues since Christmas and had been expected to be Bruce’s seventh transfer window signing. Representatives of Slovan claimed that Birmingham have agreed in principle to a six-month loan deal for Vittek, who played against England in the Euro 2004 qualifier in October. However, Bruce has now revealed that he would not be making any further signings. “It won’t be happening… The Slovan Bratislava player has spent two spells training with the Blues since Christmas and had been expected to be Bruce’s seventh transfer window signing. Scholes double lifts United
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 22, 2003
Neville embodied the industry and spirit that underpins United, who needed to show some grit to turn matters around after an alarming opening during which Cole had given Rovers a temporary lead. Blackburn have developed so impressively under Graeme Souness that it had been little surprise when Tugay, seizing on Wes Brown’s loose ball, clipped in a pass that led to Cole’s goal. The Turk, a major obstacle on England’s road to Euro 2004, had weighed up the situation so well, espying Cole’s dash and then feeding the forward. As Brown tried in vain to close Cole down, the former United striker lifted the ball sweetly over the advancing Fabien Barthez. It was an outstanding goal by Cole, his 19th in 19 League Cup ties, but United’s response reflected why they make such formidable opponents. They never give up. Inspired by the goals of Scholes, the running of Beckham and Neville and leadership of Roy Keane, United took control of the game and earlier in the second half could have been 3-1 up but for Friedel’s splendid reaction save to deny Ryan Giggs… Giggs brought another save from Friedel but then, extraordinarily, United’s Welshman was involved in a heated exchange with his manager, Ferguson. Scarcely had the finger-wagging finished then United were ahead, Keane releasing Van Nistelrooy. As Rovers screamed for offside, Van Nistelrooy ran on, his break curtailed only by the illegal challenge of Friedel, who would have been dismissed had the United striker not been heading slightly away from goal. Inevitable further punishment came Blackburn’s way when Van Nistelrooy fired in the penalty.

The Belarussians said that most of their players are not allowed to go to Israel by their club, creating a situation where only second-string players would be able to travel. English FA happy with Liechtenstein security
SI.com – Jan 25, 2003
They are so excited about this game. Few tickets England has been given just 600 tickets, which have been distributed through the official supporters club. Asked about the number of England fans likely to travel, Davies said: “We’remonitoring it and urging people without tickets not to go. UEFA’s executive committee has already rejected a request from the Liechtenstein FA to use temporary stands, a decision that disappointed the hosts since FIFA had allowed the use of temporary stands for a previous international with Spain. “This is a massive game for Liechtenstein and we had hoped we could have a greater capacity both for people here and travelling from England,” Ralf Wenaweser, secretary to theLiechtenstein national team, told Reuters at the time. “Last year we put up an extra 1,100 (seats) when we played Spain, but that was sanctioned by (soccer’s world governing body) FIFA. We thought (Europe’s governing body) UEFA would come to the same decision but it was not so.

Kidd gets players’ vote
go.com – Jan 23, 2003
‘You learn in football every day and this is a great opportunity in terms of my personal development, as well as a chance for me to contribute to my country. ‘ Kidd, who was always Eriksson’s first choice to become his assistant, will join up with the squad for England’s friendly against Australia at Upton Park next month and will bring a hands-on style to complement Eriksson’s distant approach. His first task may well be to get close to his players and generate some passion in the national team, something the critics say was lacking during England’s World Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of Brazil and the diabolical 2-2 draw with Macedonia in October during Euro 2004 qualification. Whatever his official mission statement, Kidd will be sure to get the best out of his former charges and that’s something not lost on Eriksson. ‘Brian is a very good coach, first and foremost,’ the England manager said upon Kidd’s appointment. ‘He already has international experience and that made him an ideal candidate. ”Secondly, he knows more than half of the players in the squad and is very popular among the players.
