Republic make the right choice in Kerr
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 28, 2003
And so they should. With respect to Bryan Robson, John Aldridge, Frank Stapleton, Peter Reid, Kevin Moran and Philippe Troussier – their CVs are impressive in different ways – the best Irish coach available to the Irish team was Kerr. The Football Association of Ireland have not got too much right in recent years but in selecting the 49-year-old Dubliner they have made the correct and popular choice. Those who have observed… “Kerr does not suffer fools gladly and woe betide anyone who steps out of line. But once the matter has been dealt with there is no lingering grudge. He takes over after Ireland’s Euro 2004 campaign started in the worst possible manner with defeats away to Russia and at home to Switzerland. But for Kerr the bottle is always half full. “It’s achievable,” he said of qualification for Portugal. “We had a good team before those two games so we have a good team now. There are six games and 18 points left to play for.

FA happy with Liechtenstein security
BBC News – Jan 29, 2003
There had been concern that security arrangements at FC Vaduz’s Rhinepark Stadium would not match England’s requirements. The match will present security staff with a new challenge as it is a 3,548 sell-out – just 2,000 fans normally show-up for Liechtenstein internationals. But the FA’s joint acting chief executive David Davies says he is satisfied that the game will take place in a safe environment. “We have had a discussion with Uefa about it and we had concerns,” he said… There had been concern that security arrangements at FC Vaduz’s Rhinepark Stadium would not match England’s requirements. Fowler’s Sliding Doors
BBC News – Jan 29, 2003
Fowler’s protracted move from Leeds to Manchester City has left a trail of ifs, buts and maybes. Just like in the Gwyneth Paltrow flick, where seemingly minor decisions like whether or not to catch a train can have a profound affect on life. Having turned down a move to Maine Road at the 11th hour just two weeks ago, Fowler has finally made his mind up to catch his train. The player is satisfied with his move, Leeds have brought in some much-needed funds and City have got themselves a bargain. So, everybody is happy. Aren’t they?

BBC Sport Online studies the Sliding Doors scenario of how the script may now develop for Fowler, City and Leeds… The happy ending:

Fowler:

The smile replaces the scowl on Fowler’s face as he suddenly feels at home again. After rising through the youth ranks at Liverpool, Fowler seemed unsettled by his move to Leeds but Kevin Keegan’s words of reassurance make the striker feel at home again. A refreshed Fowler hits a purple patch, scoring at will to secure a return to the England squad for the Euro 2004 qualifier in Liechtenstein. Leeds United:

Leeds take the money and run, at last. 5m fee is still short of their valuation but it’s enough to keep the wolves from the door. Venables knows the Elland Road winter sales are finally over with the January window coming to a close.

What the papers say
BBC News – Jan 29, 2003
Mr Kerr’s media handling skills are evident in the way he fielded questions about former captain Roy Keane. “Like a Roadrunner dodging falling rocks” is the Irish Times’ verdict. The Irish Independent says although the Manchester United star is not expected to be in the squad to meet Scotland on 12 February, the new manager will be working hard to have him back in the team for the start of the Euro 2004 qualifiers the following month. Bloodstained

In the cross-channel papers, President Bush’s State of the Union speech competes for space with the report into the death of Victoria Climbie. The Guardian says a key element in the Bush speech was “fresh evidence” of links between Iraq and the Al Qaeda network, which was said to have come from questioning of Al Qaeda detainees. The Daily Telegraph says the White House will release “powerful new evidence” next week detailing Saddam’s links to Al Qaeda. The Daily Mirror front page features a mock-up of Prime Minister Tony Blair with bloodstained hands to lead in to an anti-war tirade by columnist John Pilger… The paper says the council’s decision will now be passed to the Department of the Environment who will pass it to the Secretary of State who will in turn pass it on to the Queen. The appointment of Brian Kerr as the new Republic of Ireland soccer manager produces a good crop of pictures and colour pieces. Mr Kerr’s media handling skills are evident in the way he fielded questions about former captain Roy Keane. “Like a Roadrunner dodging falling rocks” is the Irish Times’ verdict.

Taylor’s InterToto no-no
go.com – Jan 30, 2003
While many clubs have looked favourably on the opportunity to play in lucrative UEFA Cup ties offered by the much-maligned summer tournament, Taylor is ‘dubious’ as to its benefits. Mid-table Villa’s season began back on July 20, less than three weeks after the World Cup Final, when they met FC Zurich in a third round InterToto tie. By the time this season’s Euro 2004 qualifiers come to an end in mid-June, some of Taylor’s players will have been in action for almost a complete calendar year. Taylor said: ‘I do have players here who have been playing football for almost all ofthe year. They had the big pressure of playing in World Cup games, with adifferent climate and all the travelling, and then came back into theIntertoto. ‘I can see now and then that there is a bit of tiredness in certain players. I have to stress that is something I don’t want to over-play.
