Africa to start 2006 campaign in October
Independent Online – Mar 26, 2003
The draw will be made in Zurich in July and the 52 African countries have until June 15 to enter the competition. As previously decided, the qualifiers for the African Nations Cup finals in Egypt in 2006 will also serve as qualifiers for the World Cup, to be held in Germany later the same year. CAF said the five African countries that went to last year’s World Cup finals – Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia – would be exempt from the preliminary round.

Eriksson faces moment of truth – Mar 23, 2003
No matter that he has begun to look like one of those successful club managers uncomfortable in international football, Eriksson stays until 2006 unless he chooses to walk beforehand. That may well be something he will have to consider if his England team do not win their next two qualifying matches for Euro 2004, away to Liechtenstein next Saturday and at home to Turkey the following Wednesday. After a scruffy win in Slovakia, a damaging… James is the favourite to continue as Seaman’s deputy, but Rio Ferdinand’s form has been so poor recently that the central defensive partnership Eriksson will use in front of the West Ham custodian is anybody’s guess. One good bet is that the England coach will turn to the experience of Gareth Southgate, who has been in commanding form for Middlesbrough this season. Although Ferdinand’s outstanding displays in the World Cup finals may protect him from the chop, there could be a window of opportunity here for Jonathan Woodgate or Chelsea’s John Terry, who was inexplicably left out of Eriksson’s squad for the shambolic friendly against Australia. Perversely, the Swede has suddenly started saying nice things about Terry, 22, whose abilities have been rated so highly by Chelsea for some time that they regard him as rather more than just a deputy for the majestic Marcel Desailly. The young centre-back’s indiscretions off the field look to be way behind him now, so his inclusion could be part of the building for the future Eriksson has to combine with qualifying. Another player of the same age who deserves to be chosen for the senior squad this time is Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry. Since being moved from left-back to the left side of midfield by manager Graham Taylor, the astute, adroit, creative and left-footed Barry has displayed most of the attributes needed to fill the problem position in the England team.

Kuffour eyes Arsenal
BBC News – Mar 26, 2003
Kuffour began the year on a tragic note, as baby daughter Godiva drowned in the swimming pool of his Accra home. It was a devastating blow to him and wife Francesca. He admits his Christian faith kept him going and gave him the resolve to play better football this season. Qualification for the 2006 World Cup with Ghana is a burning ambition. ”I would love to take Ghana to the World Cup finals here in Munich and even play the host nation. ”If the Ghana FA plan ahead and give us all we need to prepare, we can make it,” he said. The Black Stars, four time African champions, have never made it to football’s showpiece event.

Stadium guideThe modest Gluckauf Kampfbahn, a basic 35,000-capacity ground in the centre of Gelsenkirchen, was perfect for the pre-war game, with a raucous atmosphere close to the pitch, but unsuitable for the modern-day Bundesliga. With the 1974 World Cup looming, the club and the DFB built the Parkstadion, a 70,000-capacity arena transformed into a fiery football cauldron by the passionate home fans. Yet its limitations – and Germany’s hosting of the 2006 World Cup – saw to the need for the building of a new stadium alongside it: the Arena AufSchalke. Built at a cost of €192 million, the Arena was inaugurated in August 2001 and has a capacity of 60,000, including 16,000 standing places to maintain the legendary atmosphere, becoming a 52,000-seater for international matches. Its main features include a four-screen video cube, a removable pitch, a retractable roof, and a chip-card method of payment within the arena. Access to the stadium by car is easy, along the A2 or A42, with parking spaces for 14,000 vehicles. The nearest airport is Dusseldorf, and from the main railway station, S-Bahn 302 runs to the Arena, which has its own stop.

A Wild Goose Chase
Newswatch – Newswatch (subscription) – Mar 24, 2003
They advised the 2010 World Cup bid management committee to stop wasting the resources of the country. Apart from that, many African countries doubt the possibility of Nigeria ?s succeeding. Danny Jordaan, chairman, South Africa Football Association, said Nigeria was wasting its time. He said at the end of the day, South Africa would be favoured because it has better facilities. Other sports analysts say South Africa should be given the first opportunity to host the fiesta. South Africa lost the 2006 World Cup bid to Germany by one vote at the third round voting of FIFA?s executive committee. South Africa lost the 2006 World Cup bid to Germany by one vote at the third round voting of FIFA?s executive committee. South Africa ?s loss was attributed to intense lobbying and politicking mounted by European countries to deny Africa the hosting right. Sports analysts believe that South Africa stood a better chance this time around having come a long way. Newswatch learnt that Cameroun , Ghana , Togo and Republic of Benin have asked Nigeria to build them stadia in order to support the 2010 World Cup bid. But can Nigeria afford that? In spite of these odds against Nigeria, Segun Odegbami, chairman, National Institute for Sports and his 15-member World Cup bid management committee have gone ahead to solicit the support of the affected countries.

Bafana set to roll over ‘weak’ Madagascans
Independent Online – Mar 28, 2003
The South African Football Association’s decision to play games only on Fifa recognised dates, so as to avoid any club versus country issues, for now, seems to be paying dividends. “I’ve never had such a good week, I had all 22 players here by Tuesday,” said a delighted Mashaba. “It’s the first of its kind. ”

In fact, Mashaba has been so impressed by his squad this week, that he has found it difficult to select a starting line-up, or even to trim his squad to 18. “I can say all the boys here have made an impression… If Zuma plays up front, Stanton Fredericks could slot into the right midfield berth. If not, Lesley Manyathela will probably partner George Koumantarakis in attack with Golden Arrows star Mabuti Khanyeza almost certain to come off the bench at some stage. This is a strong, young squad, with all the potential to take Bafana to the 2004 Nations Cup and beyond even to World Cup 2006 in Germany. So a friendly this may be, but it is also an important building block in terms of future, tougher tests. South Africa (possible starting line-up): Baloyi; Nzama, A Mokoena, Mabizela, Lekgetho; Zuma, Pienaar, T Mokoena, Buckley; Koumantarakis, Manyathela.

Houllier confident of Champions League spot – Mar 24, 2003
The Reds responded well following their disappointing exit from the UEFA Cup, with a fine display of attacking football that has been sorely absent from Anfield for much of the season. Danny Murphy, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard were all on the mark. “For us it was two victories, the first one was three points and the second the way we played. At times we were very good in terms of movement and passing and coming on the back of the Celtic defeat it was good,” Houllier said. “The first half-hour we were outstanding – it was against Celtic – but this time we got two goals up while we were on top… And there was further reason for Houllier to be cheerful, with the news that striker Neil Mellor has signed a new contract that will tie him to Anfield until 2006. The young striker has started to break through to the Liverpool first team, and said: “The manager came to me about a month ago and said he was pleased with the way I had been progressing and also said that the club wanted to offer me a new contract. I had no hesitation at all in accepting because this is the place I want to be. I want to be working with world class players in the best possible environment. ” Filed by Rob Wright.
