Sven: Time for boys to grow up
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 10, 2003
Eriksson can make Iain Duncan Smith seem like a roaring Saturday night drunk. Yet no matter how low the decibel count, English football’s version of the quiet man is determined that one important message will come across loud and clear to his players before the. From the time the players join him tomorrow until the moment they walk out at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Saturday night, England manager Eriksson will emphasise the need to keep cool heads… From the time the players join him tomorrow until the moment they walk out at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Saturday night, England manager Eriksson will emphasise the need to keep cool heads. He said: “We must forget about the crowd and not react to anything that happens on the pitch. “It will be a good place to see if we are mature enough because it is a game for men. You have to be tough, to be a man and to behave correctly.

An empty house for England?
Black Information Link – Apr 11, 2003
Uefa yesterday charged the Football Association over racist abuse by England
fans, raising fears that Sven-Goran Eriksson&#39s team will be forced to play a
Euro 2004 qualifier behind closed doors. The FA had already been charged over pitch invasions and improper conduct of
officials after England&#39s victory over Turkey at the Stadium of Light last week,
and the latest charge means a nervous wait for Uefa&#39s verdict on May 1. European football&#39s governing body made Slovakia play a qualifier in an empty
stadium after racism and violence marred England&#39s game in Bratislava last year. An identical punishment for England would apply to June&#39s game against Slovakia
or September&#39s meeting with Liechtenstein… Racist abuse was heard from England fans before kick-off, during the
Turkish anthem and during the match. The FA, which strongly condemned the behaviour,
has until April 21 to submit its official response. Though Slovakia were made
to play behind closed doors, England will not automatically face the same sanction. Uefa&#39s control and disciplinary body treats each case in isolation and considers
various factors, including a country&#39s past record, the scale of abuse and whether
more could have been done to prevent it. It does not help England that the FA
was fined for its fans&#39 behaviour in Slovakia and that the country was threatened
with expulsion from Euro 2000 because of hooliganism. Uefa will, however, take
into account genuine efforts by the FA to tackle hooliganism and racism.

Houllier keeps Owen at home
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 11, 2003
Owen, who damaged a shin in the Premiership fixture against Arsenal a month ago but has lately been more concerned about swelling around the ankle, has eased his way back into the Liverpool side after three weeks of inactivity but felt soreness around the injury after the team’s third successive victory, at Fulham on Sunday. Gerard Houllier, the Liverpool manager, decided against gambling on Owen in a match which comes less than three days before the Premiership showdown against Manchester United… “He leads by example and is our leader up front. But I am not going to take an undue risk with his fitness by playing him with an injury. “There is a chance that he would have been fit to face Steaua and had this been a cup final he would be travelling with us with a view to playing. But we meet United on Sunday and at this stage of the season that is more important to us. “Owen will undergo a third scan on the problem while his team-mates are away. He will use four days of solitude resting the damaged joint, having extensive treatment and taking part in special cardio-vascular training to maintain fitness while minimising physical impact on the injury.

Stage is set for Connolly

Winning away is something they have not been very good at in recent years and yet with someone as quick and as lethal among their strikeforce as Damien Duff they ought to be well placed to pull off the necessary victory against Switzerland in Basle next Saturday. The irony will not be lost on Brian Kerr, the manager, that it was Mick McCarthy’s last-minute gamble in going for broke against the Swiss which ultimately cost his predecessor his job and so complicated Ireland’s Euro 2004 hopes, when the two countries met in Dublin in October last year. Jakob Kuhn’s side looked vulnerable whenever the Russians ran at them, particularly down the flanks, and in Duff and Kevin Kilbane Ireland have the players to do them even greater damage… Winning away is something they have not been very good at in recent years and yet with someone as quick and as lethal among their strikeforce as Damien Duff they ought to be well placed to pull off the necessary victory against Switzerland in Basle next Saturday. The temptation to play Chelsea’s Duff in a wide position instead of behind the front two, as Kerr normally does, has been made greater by the recent form of David Connolly, who could figure alongside Robbie Keane after preserving Kerr’s unbeaten record with a sensational goal in the 2-2 draw at home to Turkey last month.

Silver strip for Jambos
Edinburgh Evening News – Apr 12, 2003
“And we have been listening to them. We are staging a fashion show at Tynecastle to launch the new kit on April 22 and I’m sure the design will be a big hit. It is unlike anything we have had before for the away strip and is not based on any other team, north or south of the Border. “There had been suggestions that because Reebok are now our manufacturers that the away strip has been based on Liverpool’s uniform but that is not the case. “It is a refreshing change for Hearts and once unveiled I’m confident the strip will be just as popular as our present blue change kit. ” Skipper Steven Pressley was due to return to the starting line-up for today’s clash against Partick Thistle at Firhill after recovering from an ankle injury. The Scotland defender was hurt in the Euro 2004 qualifying defeat in Lithuania but is now ready to help lead the Jambos in the run-in to the season with a UEFA Cup place up for grabs for the team which finishes third in the league… “It is a refreshing change for Hearts and once unveiled I’m confident the strip will be just as popular as our present blue change kit. ” Skipper Steven Pressley was due to return to the starting line-up for today’s clash against Partick Thistle at Firhill after recovering from an ankle injury. And boss Craig Levein reckons his presence will give the whole squad a lift in the weeks ahead. He said: “I was pleased with the way our defence played last week against Dundee United because three of our back four were out but it’s good that Steven is back fit. “He’s the first name on my team sheet every week and that tells you how important he is to us. “He’s not just our captain, he will probably be the most experienced player on the pitch.

Premiership round-up
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 10, 2003
Reds boss Gerard Houllier could not offer a verdict on the striker’s availability for the Euro 2004 qualifier against Turkey in Istanbul. Fulham 2 Leicester 0 (FT) Luis Boa Morte scored both both goals as Fulham powered to a 2-0 triumph against Leicester at Loftus Road. He struck his first after fine work by man-of-the-match Steed Malbranque, who played a one-two with Lee Clark, before Boa Morte tucked home from six yards. Malbranque also set up the second. He passed to Boa Morte, whose first effort was blocked by Rogers, but his second found the net via keeper Ian Walker’s body.

McFadden fires Scots’ hopes
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 10, 2003
Well, ho, ho, ho, but as the song says: who’s got the last laugh now? For the first time in three years, Hampden has sold out – for the visit of Lithuania in. The equation in Group 5 is that Germany must win or draw against Iceland in Hamburg to qualify automatically… Maybe we will play him up front. “He did well against Germany in Dortmund. Some people say it was not good enough but he is 20 years of age and in Germany, against the big Germans, it was difficult for him. But he is something special – give him a little bit of time,” said Vogts. All of which may sound like hyperbole from Vogts – but having parlayed a full house out of a weak hand, it would be churlish to deny him the pleasure of talking up a single ace.

Republic relish World Cup draw
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 12, 2003
“Kerr hopes to put in place a warm-up programme for the World Cup within the next few weeks. The first of four fixtures is expected to be played in February. Depending on the outcome of the draw in Frankfurt it is hoped to line up attractive opposition for a squad in need of some good performances after their failure to qualify for the Euro 2004 finals.
