FA pins hopes on new TV deal
go.com – Apr 17, 2003
euroq –>Updated: April 17, 2003FA pins hopes on new TV deal. By releasing its tender document for the FA Cup and the England national team’s home games from the 2004-05 season the FA has begun the process by which the UK’s leading broadcasters will fight to show, among other things, England’s qualifying process for the 2006 World Cup. The three-year deal is of critical importance, particularly as comes as the FA is enduring its worst financial crisis in years, forcing it to reduce its estimated ?120million annual running costs by ?13million and reduce its staffing levels by 20 per cent. At the centre of the FA’s problems is finding the cash to pay for its share of the ?750-million redevelopment of Wembley Stadium and what critics argue is a legacy of overspending by former chief executive Adam Crozier. At present public service broadcaster the BBC and pay-television giant British Sky Broadcasting between them pay ?400million for the right to show FA Cup and England national team’s games under the terms of a three-year deal, which began in the 2000-01 season… By releasing its tender document for the FA Cup and the England national team’s home games from the 2004-05 season the FA has begun the process by which the UK’s leading broadcasters will fight to show, among other things, England’s qualifying process for the 2006 World Cup. That deal was negotiated at the height of the new media and sports rights boom, the concern now is that the depressed state of the market will mean the FA could reap significantly less this time around, just at a time when it needs to at least match the previous deal.

Speaking here Friday after registering his first victory as Japan coach in Wednesday?s 1-0 away win over South Korea, Zico said lack of communication was holding back his side. ?I have insisted that the Japanese players must talk more during the games,? Berlin blows whistle on Reichstag football
BBC News – Apr 22, 2003
“It’s a joke, a scandal,” Frank Schlueter of Berlin Football Association told BBC News Online. “We see it as great PR for Germany, to have football being played between parliament and the chancellor’s office – and great PR for the 2006 World Cup hosts. ”

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is said to oppose the ban, although he has no direct powers over the small Berlin-Mitte council which has imposed it.

He was instantly rewarded by a win on the difficult home ground of Brescia. All the more satisfying as the eternal rivals, Milan, managed to lose on the same day at San Siro to little Empoli. NOW the Germans have been accused of bribing their way to hosting the 2006 World Cup. A leading German paper, the Suddeutsche Zeitung, gives apparent chapter and verse. Allegedly the bribes were mediated through a company owned by the formerly all-powerful but now bankrupted TV mogul, Leo Kirch. Sums of up to ?200,000 were involved, paid for TV rights to friendlies played in the countries concerned by Bayern Munich. Thailand, Malta and Tunisia did play such friendlies; Trinidad, who wouldn’t vote for Germany, didn’t.
