England on the up
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 23, 2003
The Republic of Ireland drop a place to 15th after their win over Georgia and draw in Albania, and Wales move into the World’s top 50 after an eight-year absence with a two-place leap to 49th, following their 4-0 hammering of Azerbaijan. Berti Vogts’ Scotland have moved up four places, to 59th, after their win over Iceland and defeat in Lithuania and Northern Ireland, after defeats in Armenia and at home against Greece, drop four places to 111. France’s Euro 2004 qualifier wins are not enough to dislodge Spain from second place, Germany (fourth, up one) and Holland (fifth, up one). The biggest climbers are Cuba (55th, up 18) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (72nd, up 16). They benefit from notable away wins – the Cubans won in Trinidad, while Bosnia recorded a victory in Denmark.

The 34-year-old Chelsea defender will captain `Les Bleus’ against the Egyptians in the Stade de France friendly, and will in doing so overtake his former Stamford Bridge club-mate Didier Deschamps’ record number of France caps. Desailly missed the Euro 2004 qualifier wins over Israel and Malta at the end of March and beginning of April with a foot injury, with Zinedine Zidane captaining the side in his absence. France coach Jacques Santini said: “The call-up of Marcel Desailly was expected as long as he was fully fit. He will therefore be captain against Egypt. ”Desailly established himself initially as a midfielder in the early 1990s and then forged a successful partnership with Laurent Blanc in the heart of a solid French defence, which was a significant factor in the France `98 World Cup and Euro 2000 victories. Santini has taken the step of not selecting Zidane, Claude Makelele, David Trezeguet and Lilian Thuram in his 18-man squad, as their clubs are still involved in the Champions League… He will therefore be captain against Egypt. ”Desailly established himself initially as a midfielder in the early 1990s and then forged a successful partnership with Laurent Blanc in the heart of a solid French defence, which was a significant factor in the France `98 World Cup and Euro 2000 victories. The coach explained: “It seemed essential for me to allow a rest for those players who have got through to the Champions League semi-finals. “These are the base principles which dictate my decision. I’ll leave those players to the disposition of their clubs. ”Zidane and Makelele will be involved in the first leg of Real Madrid’s semi-final against Thuram and Juventus a week after the Egypt friendly.

Rangers skipper Ferguson’s injury problems may require an operation and there has been a suggestion that he could go under the knife before Scotland’s Euro 2004 qualifier with Germany on 7 June. Vogts insisted that he was still hopeful the player would make that game, but stressed that the situation would not cause friction between Rangers and the SFA. “I had a meeting with him (Ferguson), the Rangers doctor, the SFA doctor and Alex McLeish,” added Vogts. “We need him against Germany but at the moment he is training only one day a week and then takes pills for matches. “I think a clear answer on the timing of the operation has to come from the doctors.

Seaman let Artim Sakiri’s 11th minute corner float over his head into the farcorner to give the lowly visitors a shock lead in the Euro 2004 qualifier atSouthampton. David Beckham equalised just three minutes later with a sublime lob but VanceTrajanov put the Group Seven minnows back in front after 25 minutes. Steven Gerrard – stretchered off in the second half – got England back onlevel terms again with a fine volley 10 minutes later, but despite throwing onan extra striker in Darius Vassell the home side could not find a winner. England’s miserable evening was complete when Alan Smith was sent off for asecond bookable offence in injury time. The result leaves them with four points from two games, five behind groupleaders Turkey who thumped Liechtenstein 5-0, and piled the pressure on Englandcoach Sven-Goran Eriksson… Goce Sedloski was caught in possession by Scholes who played Beckham in behindthe defence, the captain taking one touch on his chest before hitting anexquisite lob over Petar Milosevski. Milosevski then just got a fingertip touch to Bridge’s dangerous cross asSmith waited to pounce at the far post and England appeared to have recoveredfrom the early setback. The Macedonians had not read the script however and from their secondmeaningful attack they went in front again. This time it was Gerrard the guilty party as he gave away possession to Sakiriwho advanced before hitting a speculative shot from long range. Campbell tried to clear but only succeeded in finding Vance Trajanov whostroked the ball into the far corner past Seaman’s dive. The fact that Seaman was not culpable for the goal will have be no consolationto Eriksson, but England were at least making chances at the other end. Beckham refused to give up a lost cause and pulled the ball back from theby-line but Milosevski crucially diverted the ball away from Owen and Scholescould not turn in the loose ball.

FA look for new deal
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 23, 2003
The FA will still consider a terrestrial channel, such as BBC or ITV, working in conjunction with a satellite or cable partner, such as BSkyB, in the new deal, which comes into force in 2004. This is the form of the current £405 million three-year package, which ensures that all home England games are shown live on BBC1 and Sky at the same time, a deal that resulted in more than 11 million viewers for the recent Euro 2004 qualifier against Turkey. This time around, they have dropped that commitment to a terrestrial partner, meaning Sky could now win exclusive rights to home England matches and FA Cup ties, apart for the FA Cup final, which is protected by law on terrestrial TV. That would almost certainly bring opposition from many fans who could be denied the chance to watch England games in their own homes without subscribing to Sky… This time around, they have dropped that commitment to a terrestrial partner, meaning Sky could now win exclusive rights to home England matches and FA Cup ties, apart for the FA Cup final, which is protected by law on terrestrial TV. That would almost certainly bring opposition from many fans who could be denied the chance to watch England games in their own homes without subscribing to Sky. But the FA have stressed that they have a commitment to the game to maximum their revenues even if they do not necessarily have to accept the highest bid. Sky paid the largest share – about £270 million – of the current deal, but had second choice of FA Cup ties and risk losing viewers for England games if the match is also shown on the BBC. The satellite channel could therefore be willing to bid more for an exclusive deal, rather than if they have to strike another deal with the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 or Channel 5 again. In total, there are six separate FA rights packages to bid for, ranging from package A, including all England home games and first-choice FA Cup ties, to package F, which contains games such as the FA Vase final. An intention to bid must be submitted by Monday along with a £50,000 deposit, while a decision is hoped for by September.

“We’ll have to experiment a bit,” Voeller said on Sunday, after learning that Liverpool’s Hamann and Jeremies of Bayern Munich were both unavailable because of ankle injuries. Fabian Ernst of Werder Bremen and Gerald Asamoah of Schalke 04 will replace the two in Voeller’s 18-man squad for the game in Bremen. ASTON_VILLA –>Updated: April 23, 2003Edwards determined to keep his placeAston Villa defender Rob Edwards has set his sights on challenging Mark Delaney for his first team spot – at club and international level. Edwards is currently deputising at right-back in the Villa side for Delaney who is sidelined for the rest of the season with an ankle problem. But Edwards, whose preferred position is at centre-half, managed to win a newcontract and since making his senior breakthrough over the Christmas and NewYear period he has become more assured with every game. He said: ‘Things weren’t too good at the end of last season because I’d had abad season with injuries and there were a few people who got released. ‘But I felt confident in myself, managed to get another year, got my firstteam chance and I think I’ve done okay… ‘Mark is the number one at the moment but I will just keep going and try andimprove. Myself and Mark get on fine and it would be nice if we were rivals forclub and country. ‘However, I have to admit that I do feel most comfortable playing atcentre-half so it might not come to that if I can can play in that position. ‘Your views on this story?.
