Q&A: Football Confidential
BBC News – Apr 23, 2003
The ‘ corruption, fear and fraud ‘, thing is really the publishers getting excited. I prefer to think of Football Confidential 2 as exposing the failure of regulation and the lack of integrity in football. Football has always thought of itself as a world apart, which was less problematic when its economy was so small; it did not matter that the ethics and practices of a car boot sale prevailed. Now, however, it is a billion pound multimedia industry and fans have to pay more and more of their hard earned cash to be part of it all – football has a moral duty to its fans. After all, if you support Liverpool, and you are displeased, there is no other Liverpool that you can take your business to. Gary, Harlow

What do you know about an FA file on corruption involving four Premiership managers?

RM: Football relies on rumours, it oils the wheels of the game – and yes, we have heard the rumours that a number of high profile managers are under suspicion for various misdemeanours, and were to be named. We can only assume that the FA couldn’t prove the allegations – or perhaps there is a more sinister side to it.

Beckenbauer ready for 36 teams
BBC News – Apr 24, 2003
Fifa is considering whether to increase the tournament by four countries and will make a final decision on 3 May. The idea to add another four countries was proposed by the South American football confederation Conmebol, which is not satisfied that one of its places was given to Oceania… He also mentioned that Germany already has an alternative plan for a 36-team
tournament. The World Cup will be held in 12 cities from 9 June to 9 July 2006. Earlier this week Beckenbauer rejected newspaper allegations claiming Germany influenced the 2006 World Cup vote by offering countries friendlies against Bayern Munich.

We’ve dropped down the Euro list too. “Inevitably, therefore, we will be in the fifth pot when the World Cup draw is made in Germany next December. That makes life difficult for us and diminishes the possibility of finding ourselves in a comparatively comfortable group. In the past, Northern Ireland have been third or fourth rated, but never in the bottom ranking along with the also-rans.

Ecuador start European quest
BBC News – Apr 28, 2003
For the visitors it means much more. Before last year Ecuador had never played a full international match in Europe. Qualifying for their first World Cup did wonders for the profile of Ecuadorian football. Suddenly people in Europe were curious to see the team which had finished second – ahead of Brazil – in South America’s World Cup
qualifying table. As part of their World Cup build-up Ecuador finally made the trip across the Atlantic to play senior international friendlies, beating Turkey and drawing with South Africa. There was nothing wrong with the results – six months later the win over Turkey looked like a very fine result indeed – but even so there was something missing. Both games had been held on neutral ground… Mendez scored the goal that brought World Cup victory against Croatia last year. With some of the senior figures in the side reaching the end of their careers, Mendez will be expected to take on extra responsibility as the Ecuador team enters this new phase. The objective, of course, is qualification for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Coming away from Madrid this week with their self-esteem enhanced will help them along the way. And then maybe in three years time Ecuador
will be back for their first competitive games on European soil.

Tiers were added to the four stands in order to accommodate EURO 88, and with Dortmund making regular European appearances from the mid-1990s, smaller improvements were made around the ground. The Westfalenstadion also hosted the epic UEFA Cup final of 2001 between Liverpool FC and Deportivo Alavés. Now with the 2006 World Cup on the horizon, architects are working hard on a €35m scheme which includes improving the seating in the away fans’ section of the Westtribune, bringing the overall capacity down to 60,000. The ground is at the end of U-Bahn line U45 from the main train station, with its own Westfalenstadion stop. Bars line the Hohe Strasse from the town centre, filled with fans enjoying a pre-match drink. The BVB Megastore, Felicitasstrasse 2 in nearby Dortmund-Horde, sells advance match tickets as well as club souvenirs, although there are plenty of other bars and sports shops around town which do the same… NightlifeDortmund is not the most sophisticated night out in Germany but with plenty of beer on offer and with everything concentrated in the centre, the next drink is never a long walk away. Among the traditional beer halls, the Brauhaus Kronen am Markt (Betenstrasse 1), Brinkoffs No1 (Markt 6) and Zum Alten Markt (Markt 5) are all on or off the central market square; Hovels Hausbrauerei, at Hoher Wall 5, is set in an old brewery, with a beer garden. For a football-themed bar, the BVB Fanhouse at Borgisplatz 5b in the Turkish quarter is decked out in Borussia souvenirs. The FZW at Neuer Graben 167 is the best mainstream nightclub. Iraq seek international return
BBC News – Apr 28, 2003
Bernd Stange, who was appointed last November with a brief to take Iraq to the World Cup finals in 2006, left the country before the start of the war. But the German, who has also coached the Oman national team, is keen to return to his job following the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime. “I don’t know how many of my players have survived the war, the hunger and thirst,” said Stange. “Many of my players were from the Army Club and they had to go and fight when the coalition forces entered Iraq. What happened to them I don’t know.

BBC News – Apr 25, 2003
“The name of Vernon Pugh will forever be etched into the history of Welsh rugby for his many achievements in a brilliant career with the WRU,” said Griffiths. “He presided over a difficult period in Welsh rugby, but was instrumental in creating new wealth for our game via TV and sponsorship deals and gave Wales a powerful and authoritative voice on the Five Nations and IRB committees. “It was no surprise to anyone who worked alongside him at the WRU that he was able to move into senior roles with both the IRB and the Rugby World Cup. “He had a brilliant mind and a great love for rugby.
