Bid is in the bag, says Bhamjee
Independent Online – May 3, 2003
The presumptuous ramblings of the country’s 2010 bid chairman Irvin Khoza perhaps? Or maybe those of the bid’s unwavering chief executive Danny Jordaan?

No, it’s the “considered opinion” of Ismail Bhamjee, the Council of Southern African Football Association president, but more importantly one of Fifa’s 24 executive members who will in May next year decide on the 2010 hosts. “I am sure you will agree with me that South Africa’s ability to successfully challenge the 2006 World Cup bid by Germany and only to lose by an odd goal through a technicality must surely make South Africa’s chances against African opponents a certainty. Bhamjee is from neighbouring Botswana which makes his public support for South Africa’s bid most significant. It can therefore be assumed that when it comes down to the voting, Bhamjee will put his tick alongside South Africa’s name… “In South Africa most of the infrastructure is already in place,” said Bhamjee, who will for the first time contest the presidency of CAF next January. Not only do I expect the African continent to be united in our quest for the World Cup, but I also expect South Africans at all levels and from all walks of life to be united behind the SA 2010 bid. The people in this country must get behind this bid, start filling the stadiums again for local games and show the world they have the passion for football,” said Bhamjee. And the trauma of the last bidding process, Bhamjee feels, will stand this country in good stead for their 2010 bid. “I am a great believer that whatever happens, happens for the best. Maybe now you will be more matured and even better placed than then. “There will be a lot of lobbying and a lot of pressure from a lot of people on the Fifa executive, who will be trying to influence them,” said Bhamjee.

China Won’t Host Women’s World Cup
Washington Post – May 4, 2003
They did a tremendous job in 1991 and I know they really wanted this. They really know how to put on a tournament, but what I think it came down to was the health of the athletes. Note: FIFA also tentatively expanded the number of teams in the men’s 2006 World Cup in Germany from 32 to 36. A final decision will come in June.

Costa Rica’s US coach seeks European style

Time to ban English fans from all ‘away’ games
Irish Independent – May 2, 2003

Alan Rothenberg (chairman of the World Cup organising committee inthe United States in 1994). BRACE yourself, gentle readers: this is going to be a right-wing rant. It probably won’t be a very good one, because I haven’t had a lot of practice. Nevertheless, I am going to give it my best shot. The FA has decided not to sell tickets to England fans for the match away to Turkey in October… The FA should stop inflicting them on the rest of Europe – and it is Europe where the trouble happens, because it is reasonably cheap to get there. There was no trouble at the World Cup in Japan, because it was so expensive. But there will beyond question be trouble if England qualify for the European Championship in Portugal next summer and trouble again if they qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The trouble can be avoided. The essential first step is for the FA to refuse to sell tickets to England fans. Is this a breach of civil liberties? The neighbour from hell wants the freedom to play his music at volume ten all day and all night. This is a freedom that destroys the freedom of his neighbours, who wish to be quiet.

Ahinful aims for title
BBC News – May 5, 2003
“There is no such thing as a comfort zone. ”

A big move to Fenerbahce or Galatasaray has been reported in the Turkish media but Ahinful said he is more concerned with playing well for his current club and the Black Stars. ”I believe we have the players to turn Ghana’s football fortunes around and will love to part of Burkhard Ziese’s dream team for the 2006 World Cup finals,” he said. On his recent absence from the Black Stars, Ahinful put it down to ‘communication problems,’ which prevented him from honouring national call-ups.

Derby Lane Classic goes to Dynamo
St. Petersburg Times – May 4, 2003
Also, FIFA tentatively expanded the number of teams in the men’s 2006 World Cup from 32 to 36. MLS: Brian Ching scored and had a role in another goal as San Jose of the MLS beat host New England 2-0 to improve to 3-0-1. In the 42nd minute, New England defender Carlos Llamosa went up for a header with Ching and headed the ball into his own net. WUSA: World Cup star Brandi Chastain scored on a header in the 69th minute as San Jose beat host Atlanta 1-0 to snap a two-game losing streak. TENNIS: Kafelnikov withdraws Jarkko Nieminen reached his fourth career final at the BMW Open when Yevgeny Kafelnikov withdrew because of a neck injury.

FIFA agrees in principle to 36-team World Cup
abc.net.au – May 4, 2003
“But only on condition that a schedule is made that will preserve the sporting spirit of the event and that the framework of the calendar is viable and acceptable. “So we are now giving that job to our friends from South America. They all know how to run professional football in their countries. Now they have a chance to find a solution for the World Cup finals. The ball is in their possession. ”

Blatter said he was unconcerned by a statement made following an unprecedented meeting of FIFA’s football and technical committees on Friday, when they expressed majority opposition to a 36-team tournament. He said that meeting took no notice of sporting political considerations, adding that the executive committee had taken note of its comments, but still decided to support the enlargement on a conditional basis.

Beckenbauer suggests cutting number of foreign players FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Franz Beckenbauer, the influential supervisory board chairman of Bayern Munich, has suggested a reduction in the number of foreign players in the Bundesliga. “We went from one extreme and fell into another. First we had two, then three foreigners (per club), now it’s unlimited,” said Beckenbauer, who is also the president of the 2006 World Cup organizing committee. “Perhaps only five foreigners,” Beckenbauer replied when asked by Kicker magazine what would be his suggested limit on foreign players per club. “There are teams that go out with 11 foreigners. Even Bayern had games with nine foreigners. I certainly have nothing against foreigners.

Socceroos to face Ireland in Dublin
abc.net.au – May 2, 2003
If the Dublin match goes ahead it will be the Socceroos’ first hit-out since their 3-1 win over England at London’s West Ham United ground in February. The Australians, comprising an entire squad who play for European clubs, had been initially slated to play Nigeria in England on August 19 but that game fell through. Ireland, who made the second round of last year’s World Cup, had scheduled the Australian fixture as preparation for their final qualification matches for the 2004 European Championships. “We look forward to this match as we strive to plan a meaningful international calendar for the Socceroos as they embark next year on their 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification program,” acting SA chief executive Stefan Kamasz said in a statement… The Australians, comprising an entire squad who play for European clubs, had been initially slated to play Nigeria in England on August 19 but that game fell through. 1. I don’t think so. Most sport games don’t get upgraded too much in the next game up exepct for graphics, teams, and sometimes skills, features, options, etc.You won’t be missing out on too much. Wait if you really want to, but there isn’t anything worth waiting for.
