England in fans ban | England | International | Football | Sport |…
Telegraph.co.uk – May 9, 2003
English football has banned itself from the vast pub of international fanaticism. After the multiple glass smashings and designer rumbles of Dublin, Brussels, Charleroi, Bratislava and Sunderland (really, too many to mention), it grabbed itself by the collar and launched itself into the street, calling: “Don’t come back until you can behave. ” The next day, of course, it came back; and now hundreds of England supporters have travelled to Skopje for tonight’s Euro 2004 qualifier to buy black market tickets. The willingness of so many of England’s followers to walk round the rim of the volcano last night and today could be explained in one of four ways: 1) A fascination with Balkan history (unlikely); 2) A desire to keep up personal attendance records, whatever the obstacles (plausible); 3) A knee-jerk urge to defy the FA and the Government (high probability); and 4) The chance to smash up a few bars and crack any head not sporting a Burberry cap. Whatever their reasons for going, the rebels are playing with fire, and we’ll all know who to blame if the Macedonia and Turkey trips end in bloodshed and England are cast out of Euro 2004… My memory holds a file of outrages committed against people in cafes, bar staff, motorists, mothers with children out shopping and the elderly sitting around their own town squares. It holds images of British fascists swapping Nazi insignia with Polish skinheads in Katowice, England fans Nazi-saluting in bars in Rome and a fallen English yeoman kicked into unconsciousness on a cobbled street in Slovakia less than a year ago. Each time, on England trips, you ask yourself: where does it come from, this compulsion to fight, this predisposition to provoke? Not from poverty, you can rest assured. The average street fighting man goes into battle sporting at least £400 worth of labels. A lot wear Stone Island, which is where they ought to be re-housed. And they choose their moments. England versus Serbia and Montenegro in Leicester on June 3? Carnival atmosphere.

ESPNsoccernet – England – FA Cup hits Sven’s selection

This will also be a test of his belief in the ability of Aston Villa’s GarethBarry to step up to senior level, having previously overlooked the left-sidedplayer, possibly as he has been playing in midfield for his club this season. Then again, Konchesky has also been playing in midfield for Charlton recently, while the versatile Owen Hargreaves could always step into the breach and PhilNeville and Jamie Carragher are outsiders. Indeed, when Cole was ruled out of the Euro 2004 qualifiers againstLiechtenstein and Turkey recently, the England coach selected just one left-back- Bridge – in his entire squad. He continues to overlook Chelsea’s Graeme Le Saux, while Portsmouth’s excitingyoung left-back Matthew Taylor is seen as one for the future. Sol Campbell, who will miss the FA Cup final through suspension, has alreadybeen ruled out of the game in South Africa by Arsene Wenger due to an Achillesproblem that needs rest, while Francis Jeffers has been out injured for a fewweeks. Eriksson’s other selection dilemmas are now over whether to include WayneRooney, who needs a rest, according to Everton boss David Moyes, and DavidBeckham, who is suspended for the Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia on June11. While Eriksson will listen to Moyes’ point of view, the chances are that bothplayers will travel to the game, with the squad being officially unveiled nextMonday lunchtime.

Rooney is Sven’s young player of year
go.com – May 8, 2003
‘He can turn on the ball and then drive forward. It’s very dangerous becausehe can beat people and play his team-mates in as well. ‘Although he is not tall, he is strong, so you have the option of playing himright up front. ‘Because of his broad talents, he could play with almost any kind of thepartner – and that makes him very useful. ‘Eriksson must still announce whether he will take Rooney to England’s imminentfriendly in South Africa, with the squad to be named next Monday. Everton manager Moyes has asked Eriksson to give the 17-year-old striker arest and the England coach will consider his request over the next few days. However, he is still keen to work with Rooney ahead of the Euro 2004 qualifieragainst Slovakia in June, when the teenager could have an important role to playfor his country… ‘Eriksson must still announce whether he will take Rooney to England’s imminentfriendly in South Africa, with the squad to be named next Monday. In the longer term, Rooney has a bright England future, with Erikssonbelieving he has pipped Jermaine Jenas, the players’ choice as young player ofthe year, to his own accolade. ‘He has been an explosion this season. He’s doing very well at his club andhas been fantastic for us,’ Eriksson told teh FA’s website. ‘When you are playing for England at 17 years old of course it’s a sensationall over the world.

Hartson back as history haunts Wales
Telegraph.co.uk – May 9, 2003
The sideshow caused by Newcastle United’s surprisingly unsympathetic approach to Wales’ desire to use Craig Bellamy may have taken the focus off the task but, having beaten Italy 2-1 in Cardiff in October, the incentive to achieve an improbable repeat could not be greater. Italy can move to the top of Group Nine if they beat Wales but a victory for the Welsh, watched by 8,000 travelling fans, would mean that they could qualify for Euro 2004 by beating Finland in Cardiff four days later. “Sometimes the best way to show respect to very good players is to plonk them on their backsides,” said Hughes. “You have to show you have confidence in your own ability and that you’re prepared to stand up to all these reputations.

Scotland must win to have a chance
Telegraph.co.uk – May 9, 2003
This is not what the Scotland manager had to say in public yesterday, of course – he insisted that he will be focused on how the Scots perform against the Faroe Islands at Hampden Park – but he knows that a win and a draw for Germany in Reykjavik will renew hopes that the Tartan Army can reach the finals in Portugal next summer. Scotland will be in action against the Faroese when Iceland kick off against Germany and even if they do better than their stumbling 2-2 draw with the Group Five makeweights exactly a year ago, there will be an anxious wait to discover how Rudi Voller’s side perform. If Germany win today and against Scotland on Wednesday, they will go to the finals as group winners, leaving the Scots to dispute second place with Iceland and Lithuania.

Beckham ready to pitch in
Telegraph.co.uk – May 9, 2003
England could bemoan an ill-timed crop of injuries going into today’s Euro 2004 qualifier with Macedonia. They could complain about a pitch that would tax even Alan Titchmarsh or stadium facilities that have the aura of Hackney Marshes. A few of the squad are Premiership prima donnas who could whinge in The Ritz but most are stirred by the example of… “The pitch wasn’t that good when we played in Slovakia but it was the same for them. “Even the loss of the injured or ill Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand does not trouble Beckham. “People say we have a weakened side because some players are not here but I definitely don’t see it like that,” said Beckham. “We are definitely confident that the players who come in will play just as well as those who usually play. The way Frank Lampard has been playing for Chelsea is the reason why he is here today. “Yet just as England lack important individuals, so do Macedonia. Suspension has claimed Goce Sedloski, the former Sheffield Wednesday defender who will be missed at set-pieces at both ends.

Kerr suspicious of Russia’s motives
Telegraph.co.uk – May 9, 2003
A win by a better scoreline than Russia’s 4-2 triumph last September would see Ireland in the play-offs at least, but Kerr is not thinking qualification mathematics, only of three points. “We’ve got to try to win the game and then see how the score goes. We’re not at a stage where we can chase three or four-goal victories. If they come about, good, but let’s look at winning and let the group take its course. “Kerr took over from Mick McCarthy when Ireland were pointless and Portugal seemed an impossible dream. Ten points from the four ties against Albania and Georgia, coupled with Russia’s away defeats, have put Ireland tantalisingly close to a second successive major finals. Kerr has an encyclopaedic knowledge of European football, and the Republic players will be as well briefed as it is possible to be about today’s opponents.

Future brightens for Gallacher
BBC News – May 7, 2003
Vogts has departed from his usual policy of using the Future team for up-and-coming prospects by including a number of established full internationals from English clubs. The English season ends earlier than in Scotland, so Vogts is anxious to help keep players sharp for the Euro 2004 qualifier against Germany on 7 June… Vogts has departed from his usual policy of using the Future team for up-and-coming prospects by including a number of established full internationals from English clubs. There had been suggestions that Aberdeen Russell Anderson had been unhappy at being overlooked for the squad to face Austria. But a statement from Aberdeen said that the only comment he wanted to make at this stage was that: “I’m delighted to be back involved with the international set up after injuries kept me out of recent games.

‘No Zidane, no problem’

"
Coach Jacques Santini wants to keep his major creative force fresh for the trip to Ljubljana. "His involvement against Cyprus remains very doubtful, but he must be competitive for the match on Wednesday," he said. Thierry Henry, meanwhile, insisted that the injury to Zidane does not have the same implications as the World Cup. "It's Cyprus – it is not the same as the World Cup," said Henry. Santini is adamant that his team can flourish without Zidane. "Since my arrival here, we have built a system of mental comfort so that we can win important matches at important times even when deprived of our best players. "His absence puts the onus on Ludovic Giuly and Robert Pires, even if we have other options with Sylvain Wiltord.
