England eye 2006 World Cup win
Telegraph.co.uk – May 12, 2003
Yet no generation of international players has had to absorb more angst than the England teams of the last 12 years. The more inflated the Premiership becomes the more the disparity between domestic hype and international accomplishment gnaws at the bones. In their 2006 World Cup literature FIFA refer to England as “the global distributor of the game”, as if the Football Association are a parcel delivery service. For the mother country, the role of UBS or Red Star is both a blessing and a curse. It over-burdens 20-year-old England players with the idea that even the narrowest failure is an affront to the game’s Victorian traditions. The upside is a strong identity, fanatical support and the capacity to rise and rise again. In spite of all the misery, Eriksson’s leading players are not weighed down by pessimism.

Prospects bright for 2006, says Eriksson

It’s a long way away. It’s difficult to think about the World Cup when we still have Euro 2004 to play. It will very soon be September when we start having to qualify for the World Cup. These are exciting times for English football.

Morocco lead 2010 race
Telegraph.co.uk – May 11, 2003
Yesterday, five inspectors from FIFA wrapped up a week-long visit to South Africa and, as usual, they refused to comment on the country’s capability of hosting the World Cup. But one member of the FIFA executive told me: “If the vote was held today, Morocco would beat South Africa. South Africa have to do more than just rely on the old ‘Mandela magic’… Then it lost to Germany because Charles Dempsey, the Scotsman-turned-New Zealander who was then the Oceania representative on the FIFA executive, ignored a mandate from his federation to back South Africa. Instead, he abstained on the crucial final vote, which meant Germany secured a 12-11 victory. Had Dempsey voted as instructed, it would have been a tie and then South Africa could have won through the casting vote of Sepp Blatter, the FIFA president who had declared his backing for the South African bid. This time around, with the 2010 tournament certain to be held in Africa, South Africa had been seen as unbeatable – well ahead of other contenders Morocco, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia.

Brazil set for Wembley opener
BBC News – May 13, 2003
And Cunnah said: “They would certainly fit the bill, though I represent Wembley and not the FA so it wouldn’t be for me to say. “But if not them then someone of similar standing to ensure a full stadium; the likes of Argentina, Germany – or even Scotland. ”

FA spokesman Nick Barron added: “It is likely that
we will open the new stadium with an England game and who better to play than
the world champions Brazil?

“The stadium should be finished well before the 2006 FA Cup final and the Football Association needs to have conversations with the national
associations of those countries but it is definitely something we would like to
do. ”

Cunnah and Barron were talking following the launch of Club Wembley, which will provide more than 15,000 seats guaranteed over 10 years at the new venue, as well as nearly 2,000 seats in corporate hospitality boxes. Sales of the seat packages and boxes are hoped to help realise WNSL’s goal of self-financing the stadium. HAVE YOUR SAY

But the average fan unable or unwilling to commit to a 10-year payment will not be priced out of the Wembley market. The FA has faced criticism over the allocation of seating at the stadium, but the governing body and WNSL both defended the early seat sales… The 2006 FA Cup final was pencilled in as the first showcase game at the new ?757m venue. But WNSL chief executive Michael Cunnah told this website: “The first FA Cup final is still scheduled to be the 2006 match, but it’s fair to say we would like to stage a fitting opening game when the stadium is ready. He added: “We will negotiate with the Football Association when the time is right to discuss the football calendar and what world-leading football nation would be available to play the first game at the new stadium. ”

NEW WEMBLEY FACTFILE

Total stadium cost ?757M

Capacity: 90,000

500 catering outlets and 2,000 toilets

Double the surface area of Stadium Australia

1km concourse the width of a four-lane motorway

Every seat will have more legroom than the old Royal Box seats

Four main eateries will be the four biggest restaurants in London

That statement was a broad nod in the direction of rumours linking Brazil with England’s opening Wembley match. And Cunnah said: “They would certainly fit the bill, though I represent Wembley and not the FA so it wouldn’t be for me to say. “But if not them then someone of similar standing to ensure a full stadium; the likes of Argentina, Germany – or even Scotland. ”

O’Neill shares plaudits with ‘excellent’ Sutton
Telegraph.co.uk – May 12, 2003
“Does that mean that every single Scotland player has to be playing first-team football all the time? I wouldn’t be best pleased at these comments,” said O’Neill. Nevertheless, as Scotland begin to contemplate their qualifying campaign for the 2006 World Cup, there is concern about the goalkeeping position, with Douglas blamed for at least two of the goals in the Scots’ recent 6-0 thrashing by Holland, and the player’s cause is not helped as long as he plays second fiddle to Magnus Hedman. Hedman is expected to return to action against Livingston in today’s lunchtime kickoff at Almondvale and Thompson is also back in the squad after recovering from a toe injury. Stilian Petrov has overcome an ankle problem and Michael Gray is included, despite suffering a dead leg in the 2-0 CIS Insurance Cup victory over Partick Thistle at Firhill on Thursday. Didier Agathe is still out, however. So, too, is Livingston’s David Fernandez, victim of a torn hamstring, so once again he cannot turn out against his former club and Lee Makel is suspended, but there was at least one measure of good news for Livvy when it was revealed that their shirt sponsors, Intelligent Finance, had extended their deal, even though the existing contract still had two years to run.

Movie tie-ins rule in gaming With no big hardware news, software to…
San Francisco Chronicle – May 12, 2003
“But then there’s years like this year, this part of the cycle where games are incrementally better than before,” he said. So the pressure is on for software gamemakers. Speed issues corruption alert
BBC News – May 12, 2003
The ACU now operates with a budget of ?1m a year and at least one security manager is assigned for every international series. “We can say with some confidence that the sport is now free of serious corruption, but we know that the corrupters are ready to come back if we relax our guard,” Speed added. German football legend Franz Beckenbauer recently warned of possible match-fixing at the 2006 World Cup if the format is changed to allow 36 teams to compete. “Some teams would have to wait a week to find out if they were eliminated. Others could agree on a result,” the Bild newspaper quoted him as saying.
